BEIJING, Nov. 17 (Xinhua) -- China and the United States underlined that each country and its people have the right to choose their own path, and agreed to hold the next round of human rights dialogue in Washington by the end of February 2010, said the China-U.S. joint statement issued Tuesday.     According to the statement, the Chinese and U.S. sides agreed that all countries should respect each other's choice of a development model.     "Both sides recognized that China and the United States have differences on the issue of human rights," said the statement, "Addressing these differences in the spirit of equality and mutual respect, as well as promoting and protecting human rights consistent with international human rights instruments, the two sides agreed to hold the next round of the official human rights dialogue in Washington D.C. by the end of February 2010."     The two sides agreed that promoting cooperation in the field of law and exchanges on the rule of law serves the interests and needs of the citizens and governments of both countries, and decided to convene the China-U.S. Legal Experts Dialogue at an early date.

BEIJING, Dec. 9 (Xinhua) -- China's top legislator Wu Bangguo said Wednesday the country regards Egypt as one of the most important strategic cooperative partners among Arabian and African nations.     "We attach great importance to the relations with Egypt," Wu, chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress (NPC), China's top legislature, told visiting Deputy Speaker of Egyptian People's Assembly Zeinab Radwan. To promote relations between China and Egypt, both influential countries in the world, conformed to the fundamental interests of the two nations and the two peoples, and was also conducive to regional and world peace and prosperity, Wu said. BEIJING, Dec. 27 (Xinhua) -- China would not yield to pressure for the appreciation of its currency yuan, or renminbi, in any form, Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao said Sunday.     "A stable Chinese currency is conducive to the international community," Wen told Xinhua in an exclusive interview.

UNITED NATIONS, Jan. 1 (Xinhua) -- China on Friday assumed the rotating presidency of the UN Security Council for the month of January.     China will perform its duty as the rotating Council president in an objective and fair way and work with other Council members to maintain international peace and security, said Zhang Yesui, China's permanent representative to the United Nations, in a recent interview.     China will do its utmost to make sure that the Security Council works in a smooth and efficient way, Zhang added.     The Security Council presidency rotates among the Council members in the English alphabetical order of their names. Each president holds office for one calendar month. China previously assumed the presidency in October 2008.     As a permanent member of the Security Council and the largest developing country in the world, China fully participates in the work of the United Nations and plays a constructive role, Zhang said.     Under the UN Charter, the Security Council has the primary responsibility for the maintenance of international peace and security in the world at large.     The Council has 15 members: five permanent members -- China, France, the Russian Federation, the United Kingdom and the United States -- and 10 non-permanent members elected by the UN General Assembly for two-year terms.     Also on Friday, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Brazil, Gabon, Lebanon and Nigeria began their two-year terms on the 15-nation Council.     The five new Security Council members were chosen after running uncontested races for the non-permanent seats, and they were duly elected by the 192-member General Assembly during a secret ballot at the United Nations Headquarters in New York in October 2009.     The five countries joined Austria, Japan, Mexico, Turkey and Uganda, whose terms on the Council end on Dec. 31, 2010.
