SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Explosions rang out Thursday and Friday at an ocean view La Jolla home where FBI agents served a search warrant. Agents were checking the house at 625 Wrelton Drive in an ongoing investigation when they came across “certain materials,” said FBI Special Agent Davene Butler. The County of San Diego Hazardous Incident Response Team (HIRT) and San Diego Fire-Rescue were contacted for help to detonate and dispose of unstable chemicals. The material could not be safely moved from the neighborhood, Butler said. On Thursday, people who live near the home were evacuated for their safety, according to the FBI. On Friday, they were told to shelter in place. The bomb squad detonated Perchloric Acid in the backyard around 1 p.m."The reason we're blowing them up is, if they are handled improperly, they can blow up on their own," said Robert Wise, of the Environmental Protection Agency. Federal search warrants show a man named Alex Jvirblis owned the home. Jvirblis passed away in August. He owned a materlal science company called Curtis Technology, giving him access to the chemicals. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Health officials issued two new public health orders Monday addressing cruise ships arriving in San Diego during the coronavirus pandemic.The orders are meant to give the county more legal framework in how the Port of San Diego interacts with ships and the cruise industry, Dr. Eric McDonald, the county's medical director of epidemiology, said.RELATED: San Diego gyms ordered to close in new coronavirus health orderThe new orders include:"No passenger or employee may disembark a cruise ship in San Diego harbor without the approval of the health officer or designee if any person on the cruise ship has tested positive for COVID-19. Any cruise ship that is permitted to dock in San Diego harbor shall notify the health officer or designee regarding any emergency medical treatment required for passenger/employee and follow all directives from the health officer or designee.No cruise ship in San Diego harbor may dock or disembark employees or passengers after March 31, 2020. However, upon approval of the health officer, a cruise ship may dock solely for the purposes of receiving fuel and provisions, so long as no employee or passenger disembarks. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Eve Ramirez made the difficult decision to close her City Heights taco shop when the coronavirus outbreak hit. She says she did it to protect her eight-month-old son. "I got scared to death," she said. "I was like, you know what, I had my baby boy in January, imagine something were to happen to me. I'm a single mom. I can't risk my baby's life. I immediately shut down without thinking twice."Ramirez, who owns Mexicali Street Tacos, is one of a large number of San Diegans now struggling to pay for basic necessities amid the pandemic. A San Diego Association of Governments study released Thursday says 71% of respondents reported not being able to pay for rent, food, and utilities, while two-thirds said the pandemic has negatively impacted their employment. Ramirez said she has received donated diapers from friends, is on Medi-Cal and is receiving government food allowances. "I had no choice but to apply for help," she said. More than 3,500 San Diego households responded to the survey, conducted via 23 community-based organizations. San Ysidro Health surveyed 300 families about the impact of the virus. Ana Melgoza, the organization's vice president of external affairs, says the virus has hit South Bay families particularly hard. She says many live in overcrowded homes due to high rent, and are forced to work in jobs that require interaction with the public such as in grocery stores and retail. "When you have people literally dying to go to work and provide for their families, we need to make sure health care is a priority for people so that when they do feel sick or are infected they have the right follow up care to manage and survive this deadly virus," Melgoza said. The study also says 60% of parents with school-aged children reported distance learning challenges during the school year.
