BROOMFIELD, Colo. – Police in Broomfield, Colorado, responded to the Walmart Tuesday afternoon after shots were reportedly fired inside of the store, Sgt Steve Griebel of the Broomfield Police said. Griebel said a suspect was in custody and no injuries were reported.Video from the scene showed at least 10 police cars and two fire trucks in front of the Walmart, and the front door of the business had been cordoned off with police tape. BOONE COUNTY, Ky. – Authorities in Kentucky are warning parents of a kidnapping scam.The Boone County Sheriff’s Office says the ruse is commonly known as a “virtual kidnapping ransom scam,” and victims describe it as terrifying and very realistic.Two separate families reported that they received random phone calls from a foreign phone number on Monday and Tuesday. When the parents answered, they heard who they thought were their children saying, “They have me” and “I’m in a van,” according to the sheriff’s office.During the first incident, officers say the purported kidnapper told a father, “If you want to see your daughter again, follow my instructions.” He quickly disconnected the call and contacted his wife, who then confirmed that their daughter was safe and still at school.The second call reportedly included similar threats, along with additional demands. The sheriff’s office says the alleged kidnapper demanded, “All the money you have” and followed up with a threat, saying a mother's child would be killed if she hung up on him.While keeping the culprit on the phone, the mother was able to contact deputies who confirmed that her child was safe and still at school.If you or a loved one receives one of these calls, the sheriff’s office says it’s important to remain calm and immediately begin taking the steps to verify the whereabouts of your child.“It is also recommended for everyone to check their social media privacy settings and to verify what information can be viewed by the public on these accounts,” wrote the sheriff’s office. “This information could be used against you to make the scam seem more realistic.” 1656

AURORA, Colo. — Detainees at a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) Detention Center are conducting a hunger strike in response to repeated infectious disease quarantines.This week, more than 200 detainees in the Aurora Contract Detention Facility are under quarantine, meaning they cannot visit with family, attend court hearings or leave their respective detention pods.Concern is growing for the families of the detainees, as some 65 have been under a mumps quarantine for two months and have just been told that quarantine will now start over again and will last another 21 days.Priscilla Cruz-Moreno’s husband Henry is one of the 65 heading into another quarantine. “We are going on two months now. It's inhumane," she said.“He's in pod B4,” she said. “The pod decided to strike, which means they are not going to be eating food."Priscilla says her husband's pod inside the ICE detention facility has now been placed a quarantine for mumps and chicken pox for the third consecutive time — more than 60 straight days.Danielle Jefferis, a University of Denver-based attorney, has been fighting for the rights of these detainees for months."We are hearing that detainees are getting extremely frustrated because they don’t know why these quarantines are being extended. And the consequences of the quarantines being extended are pretty great," she said.Those consequences include no family or attorney visitations, court and bond hearings cancelled, and ultimately a delay a justice.She has a message for GEO Group, the private contractor paid to operate the facility.“Improve medical care in the facility. BEL AIR, Md. – A bank teller in Maryland is accused of forcing his way into the home of a 78-year-old customer who had removed a large amount of money.Deputies with the Harfod County Sheriff’s Office responded to the customer’s home in Bel Air on Nov. 11 in reference to a burglary in progress. When officers arrived, they were informed that a man rang the doorbell and then forced his way into the home when the resident opened the door. The sheriff’s office says the suspect immediately began assaulting the 78-year-old man until a second resident, a 57-year-old woman, intervened. At that time, the suspect reportedly ran upstairs, and the second resident ran to a nearby home to call police.The suspect fled the area before to deputies arrived, but investigators later identified him as 19-year-old Nathan Michael Newell, a teller at the victim’s bank. “As the investigation continued, it was determined one of the victims had removed a large amount of money from the bank,” wrote the sheriff’s office. “Detectives gained information identifying a teller at the bank as a the suspect.”Newelll was arrested on Nov. 13 and charged with home invasion, robbery, 1st and 3rd degree burglary, and 1st and 2nd degree assault. The residents who were attacked in the home invasion both suffered injuries.
