URUMQI, July 14 (Xinhua) -- Abdul'ahat Abdulrixit, vice chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), said Tuesday that ethnic unity was the "basic benefit" for all the people in Xinjiang.     "Ethnic unity is the basic benefit for the 21 million people of various ethnic groups in Xinjiang... and these people have a long tradition of loving and supporting each other," Abdul'ahat Abdulrixit told Xinhua in an interview in Urumqi Tuesday.     Abdul'ahat Abdulrixit, an ethnic Uygur, was born in 1942 in northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region. He joined the Communist Party of China (CPC) in 1960 and was elected CPPCC National Committee vice chairman in 2008. "Ethnic unity is the basic benefit for the 21 million people of various ethnic groups in Xinjiang... and these people have a long tradition of loving and supporting each other," Abdul'ahat Abdulrixit told Xinhua here on Tuesday    "No matter whether in war or peace, people of Han and minority groups always had a strong emotional tie and they could not be separated from each other," he said.     Abdul'ahat Abdulrixit cited many heroic stories during the July5 riot in which people from Han and other ethnic groups risked their lives to save people from the violence.     According to media reports, an 81-year-old Uygur old man risked his life to save 18 people, and a Han boy named Li Huan saved more than 10 people and even captured a rioter.     "The loving relationship among us has gone through all kinds of weather and will never be destroyed by these ethnic separatists," Abdul'ahat Abdulrixit said.     He condemned the riot as an "extremely outrageous" crime organized by people who intentionally wanted to arouse ethnic conflicts and disturb social stability.     The unrest which occurred on July 5 in Urumqi, capital of Xinjiang, resulted in at least 184 deaths and left 1,680 injured.     Abdul'ahat Abdulrixit said that since the founding of the New China, health care, education, science and technology in Xinjiang had developed rapidly.

Crude oil futures have risen 60 percent to more than 70 dollars a barrel this year from a July record on signs of a global recovery.     However, economists and analysts believe this round of price hike will not have any direct and obvious impact on the Chinese economy, which is largely fueled by coal.     "As China only needs oil to supply 20 percent of its energy consumption, costlier oil will not make things as bad as costlier coal," said Lin Boqiang, director of the China Center for Energy Economics Research at Xiamen University.     "However, the economy will be hurt if higher crude prices drive up coal prices," Lin said.     In addition, China's consumer prices fell for a fourth month in May, making it easier for the government to raise oil prices, said Niu Li, senior researcher at the State Information Center.     The price hike comes amid a surge in demand for automobiles in the world's third-largest economy. Passenger car sales rose 47 percent in May to 829,100 units, the biggest jump since February 2006.     Chen Zheng, an auto industry analyst with China Securities Co, believed that consumer demand would not be seriously dampened by this round of price hikes, as China's car owners are largely social elites, who can afford the moderate increases in gasoline prices.     "But if oil prices continue to surge, I'm sure many people will stop buying new vehicles, especially the high-emission cars," Chen said.     PetroChina and Sinopec, two major oil producers, went high shortly after opening, but closed with smaller gains, up 0.28 percent and 0.66 percent to 14.48 yuan and 10.66 yuan respectively in Shanghai Tuesday.

BEIJING, June 24 (Xinhua) -- China's State Council reached a decision at an executive meeting on Wednesday to promote a new type rural social pension pilot projects.     The meeting, presided over by Premier Wen Jiabao, said building a new rural social pension system was key to reducing rural poverty and narrowing the gaps between urban and rural areas. It was also key to maintaining social stability and promoting domestic consumption.     According to the meeting, the new-type rural social pension pilot programs will be carried out in 10 percent of counties this year. BEIJING, June 11 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao and U.S. President Barack Obama sent messages respectively to the United States' National Symphony Orchestra (NSO) Thursday, wishing its performance in China a success.     "I am pleased to extend my warm welcome to all the visiting artists from the United States," Hu said in the message. It plans to give a series of concerts in Beijing, Xi'an and Shanghai and perform the renowned works of Mendelssohn, Tchaikovsky and Wagner for the Chinese audience.
