ESCONDIDO, Calif. (KGTV) - The recent birth of a southern white rhino calf marks a major success milestone in the project to save the species' close genetic cousin, the northern white rhino. Only two northern whites are left in the world. Both are females incapable of reproducing.Edward, the calf born in late July, was conveived through in vitro fertilization using frozen sperm samples. "It was so exciting for everyone who worked on this project, the culmination of a very long time and a lot of work," said Dr. Barbara Durrant, a scientist who has worked on the in vitro aspect of the project.Still, Durrant says this milestone still comes during the early stage of the audacious plan. Scientists eventually hope to create northern white embryos with stem cells. Those embryos would then be transferred into female southern white rhinos, who would deliver and raise the calves. The Safari Park brought six females to its facility to act as surrogates, including Victoria, the female who gave birth to Edward.Durrant is excited to move to the next step."We're turning our efforts more toward the lab, toward figuring out how to do the in vitro fertilization and the embryo development.Durrant estimates as long as ten years until the project finally leads to a living northern white rhino calf.Edward is currently being kept in a part of the Safari Park to which the public does not have access. (KGTV) -- An Encinitas family is thanking surfing legend Laird Hamilton after they say he rescued them during a flood while on vacation in Kauai.The Gwilliam family says they were enjoying a normal vacation on the island when, like usual, it started to rain.The family says they weren’t worried until the heavy rain got even heavier. “It was the type of rain that was so heavy, we would say there’s no way I could get worse," recouted Erin Gwilliam. "Then it got worse."The family says so much rain had fallen, the ground was no longer absorbing the water. That’s when the trouble started.Erin and her husband Jamas took photos of the homes all around them, some of which collapsed from the strong floodwaters.The only bridge in and out of the small town of Hanalei was covered by several feet of water. By the end of their trip, not only had the Gwilliam family run out of food, they also needed to catch their flight.The family was almost out of time when a friend called with a plan. The plan? Big-wave surfer Laird Hamilton.Erin says her family was a little star struck. "Being in the same boat as him was a little intimidating, but he didn't let that be, it was just like hurry get on we gotta go.”Hamilton took them to safety across the river and to a dock where the family was able to drive to the airport.Erin says she is thankful the surfer came to save them from a dangerous situation. “The ocean and water is his life he was so comfortable and confident in what he was doing, he was extremely capable, having him get you out it was a huge relief.”Due to the severe damage, Hamilton and his wife have set up a GoFundMe account to raise money. ESCONDIDO, Calif. (KGTV) -- A North County family is raising money for an Escondido Police officer with a brain tumor. According to the family, Brett Byler was found to have a large brain tumor on February 16. The family said in a GoFundMe that Byler had surgery Thursday to remove 80 percent of the tumor. Byler is scheduled to undergo chemotherapy for the remainder of the tumor. The family says Byler is a former Marine and has been a police officer since 2009 with the Department of Defense and San Diego Police. Click here for the GoFundMe. 554

ENCINITAS, Calif. (KGTV) — Encinitas leaders will consider developing a parking lot for the homeless next week, but the idea is already receiving pushback.If approved, the parking lot would be the first for homeless use in North County and modeled after other similar lots in San Diego.The location, at the Leichtag Commons agricultural property on Saxony Road, would be operated by Jewish Family Services. Some locals have already submitted letters to Encinitas City Council against the idea: "While a homeless parking lot may sound like a compassionate idea, it will be problematic for the area," wrote one resident."I am not opposed to helping, I am opposed to the location," said another, citing safety concerns."I wonder who is going to pay for the added police patrol/protection when this upscale neighborhood becomes a hep-c ghetto like parts of downtown San Diego," wrote another resident."There's something a bit crazy about allowing homeless people to live in one of the most desirable towns in the world for free, no strings attached," another local wrote.Much of the money to be used for the program comes from a state grant.
