Stuart, Stonewall Jackson, Confederate President Jefferson Davis, and others removed from the historic Old House Chamber.A crew worked through the night Thursday to have them out of the Capitol by Friday morning. The other Confederate statues removed included:Joseph E. REUNION, Fla. – The Los Angeles Lakers are this year’s NBA champions. The L.A. team defeated the Miami Heat 106-93 in Game 6 of the NBA Finals Sunday night, marking the team's 17th NBA title, tying the Boston Celtics for the record. This also marks LeBron James’ fourth NBA championship win. He previously won with the Heat in 2012 and 2013, as well as in 2016 with the Cleveland Cavaliers.Game 6 was also the 260th of James’ playoff career, lifting him into sole possession of first place on the league’s postseason appearances list. After missing the playoffs in his first two seasons, James has reached the postseason 14 times in 15 years. The 2019-2020 season was unlike any other before. First, it was suspended when the COVID-19 pandemic started in March. And then it resumed, with games played at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex near Orlando, Florida. 869

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — California and 16 other states have filed a lawsuit against the Trump administration over its plans to scrap gas mileage standards and how much greenhouse gases vehicles can emit, Gov. Jerry Brown and Attorney General Xavier Becerra announced Tuesday. The suit takes aim at a plan by the Environmental Protection Agency to eliminate standards for vehicles manufactured between 2022 and 2025. The standards would have required vehicles to get 36 miles per gallon (58 kilometers per gallon) by 2025, about 10 miles (16 kilometers) over the existing standard.EPA administrator Scott Pruitt says the standards are not appropriate and need revision. They were set in 2012 when California and the Obama administration agreed to single nationwide fuel economy standard.RELATED: President Trump, California clash over key issuesCalifornia officials say the standards are achievable and the EPA's effort to roll them back is not based on any new research. They argue the plan violates the Clean Air Act and didn't follow the agency's own regulations.California has a unique waiver that allows it to set its own tailpipe emissions standards for vehicles, which it has used to combat smog and more recently global warming. Twelve other states have adopted the California standards as their own.Automakers have argued that the current requirements would have cost the industry billions of dollars and raised vehicle prices due to the cost of developing the necessary technology.RELATED: Nearly every governor with ocean coastline opposes Trump's drilling proposalThe lawsuit was filed in the U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia. Joining California are Connecticut, Delaware, Illinois, Iowa, Maine, Maryland, Minnesota, New Jersey, New York, Oregon, Rhode Island, Vermont, Washington, Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, Virginia and the District of Columbia. 1905

Rudy Giuliani said Wednesday that President Donald Trump paid back his personal lawyer, Michael Cohen, the 0,000 in hush money that was used to pay off Stormy Daniels. The payment is going to turn out to be "perfectly legal," Giuliani said in an interview with Fox News' Sean Hannity."That money was not campaign money, sorry," Giuliani said. "I'm giving you a fact now that you don't know. It's not campaign money. No campaign finance violation." 457

Right now, thousands of people are without power on the Gulf Coast, and the relentless rains and remnants of what was Hurricane Sally is now soaking the Carolinas and moving northeast. In hard-hit Alabama, where the storm first struck land as a Category 2 Hurricane, debris-laced waters have taken over once-thriving neighborhoods. Swollen and rising rivers are now threatening bridges across Florida. At least two people have been killed since Sally made landfall."Citizens awoke to extensive damage and destructive property, loss of power and infrastructure and sadly even the loss of life," Alabama Gov. Kay Ivey said Thursday. One of those deaths occurred in Georgia, when Sally's heavy rains saturated the soil, triggering the collapse of a tree onto a home."Widespread river flooding is ongoing, and it could continue over the next week in different parts of Florida," Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis said Thursday.Thousands of homes and businesses on the Gulf Coast are still without power, 48 hours after Sally made landfall."Power though is a major, major initiative and a priority at this point," DeSantis said. "...they do have crews here working. They are going to be working 24/7 to get the power back on."Now, officials are keeping their eyes on new threats brewing. The National Hurricane Center is currently monitoring six storms in the Atlantic. One of those systems has already developed into a major hurricane, though it isn't expected to impact the U.S. However, Tropical Depression 22 is expected to strengthen into at least a Tropical Storm in the coming days before making landfall in Texas."There are seven systems out there right now," said Greg Michel, the executive director of Mississippi Emergency Management. "One of which the system in the bay of Campeche, we could be doing this again in a few days." 1831
