BEIJING, Nov. 27 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi on Saturday discussed the latest situation on the Korean Peninsula in phone calls with Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov and Japanese foreign minister Seiji Maehara.The discussions follow an artillery exchange between South Korea and the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) in waters off the west coast of the divided peninsula on Tuesday.During the conversations, Yang said safeguarding peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula served the common interests of concerned parties.Those parties should call on the DPRK and South Korea to exercise calmness and restraint and hold dialogue and make contacts, and not to take actions that would escalate the conflict, he said.He said all parties should work together to help cool the situation as soon as possible and effectively ensure no repeat of such conflict.Meanwhile, the Chinese minister expressed the hope that concerned parties would take a reasonable and pragmatic approach to actively create favorable conditions for resuming the six-party talks.The parties should also commit themselves to establish related mechanisms at an early date to eliminate various factors threatening peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula and in the whole region.Lavrov said Russia agreed with China on the latest situation and was ready to keep close contact with China to help defuse the tensions on the peninsula and create conditions for a restart of the six-party talks.Maehara said that Japan is willing to work together with China to jointly safeguard peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula and push forward the denuclearization process of the Peninsula.During Tuesday's incident, shells landed on South Korea's Yeonpyeong Island near the contentious sea border called Northern Limit Line (NLL). BEIJING, Dec. 22, (Xinhua) -- China has rejected the Vatican's criticism of a recent national congress of Chinese Catholics, blaming the Vatican for damaging relations between the two sides.A spokesperson for the State Administration for Religious Affairs (SARA) said Wednesday the Vatican's criticism was very imprudent and ungrounded.In a statement dated Dec. 17, the Vatican condemned the congress, which elected the new leadership of China's Catholic church, and accused China of violating religious freedom.The congress from Dec. 7 to 9 elected the heads and other senior members of the Chinese Catholic Patriotic Association (CCPA) and the Bishops' Conference of the Catholic Church in China (BCCCC).The spokesperson said the congress, which is held every five years to amend the CCPA's and BCCCC's constitutions, elect a new leadership and set future agenda, does not deal with Catholic doctrines or violate the fundamental Catholic faith, and "there is no question of getting recognition by any foreign organization or state."The spokesperson said China's religious freedom was protected by the Chinese Constitution, and it was a misinterpretation by the Vatican to declare the incompatibility of Catholic doctrine and the Chinese Catholic church's principle of independent self-governance.China's Constitution grants Chinese citizens freedom of religious beliefs, but requires independence of religious organizations and affairs in China from foreign influence.Under this constitutional provision, the Catholic church and other religions in China adhered to the principle of self-governance and self-support, the spokesperson said.The CCPA and the BCCCC endorsed this principle in their new constitutions adopted at the congress, according to the spokesperson."The BCCCC fulfills her Pastoral Mission at the Faith and Evangelization according to the power and authority of our Lord Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit endowed upon His Disciples," said the BCCCC's constitution.On the dogma and moral teachings of the Church, the constitution said the BCCCC is "in union with the Successor of St. Peter, the Head of the community of the Disciples.""Has the Vatican not read the two constitutions? BEIJING, Nov. 10 (Xinhua)-- China will issue new judicial rules governing sentencing standards for cyber attack crimes by the end of this year, an official of the Ministry of Public Security (MPS) told Xinhua Wednesday.China has become a major victim of online crimes such as hacker attacks, with eight out of every ten computers in the country having suffered botnet attacks, said Gu Jian, vice director of the Internet security bureau of the MPS.Botnet is a network of computers that have had malicious software installed in them and are under the control of criminals, while the owners of the computers remain unaware of the computer hacking.China criminalized attacks on computer systems in 1997, and made specific provisions on hacker attacks, such as outlawing the illegal control of another computer, in its seventh amendment to the Criminal Law in 2009.In most botnet cases in China, the controllers were found to be located abroad, Gu said.Moreover, more than 80 percent of the cyber attacks targeting websites of China's government agencies came from overseas, Gu said.Gu called for more international cooperation in fighting transnational online crimes at the fourth U.S.-China Internet Industry Forum which concluded Tuesday in Beijing.At the forum, China and the U.S. agreed to strengthen international law enforcement in combating cyber crimes, improve international cooperation mechanisms in this regard, and enhance communication on fighting cyber crimes.In addition to cyber attacks, other kinds of major online crimes included online pornography, online gambling and online fraud, Gu added.

BEIJING, Nov. 23 (Xinhua) -- China's vegetable prices declined at a faster rate last week as weather remained good and local governments stepped up efforts to ensure supplies.According to a report by the Ministry of Commerce (MOC) on Tuesday, the prices of 18 types of vegetables for the week ending November 21 declined 2.6 percent from the previous week, and the pace of the fall accelerated from the previous week's 0.8 percent.The ministry said that radishes, cucumbers and celery were among the vegetables that witnessed the largest fall in prices, dropping 11.1 percent, 10 percent and 7 percent respectively week-on-week.This was good news for the Chinese government as it strove to ease inflation and keep rising prices in check.China's consumer price index (CPI), a main gauge of the country's inflation, surged to a 25-month high of 4.4 percent in October. Food prices, which account for one-third of the basket of goods used to calculate the CPI, soared 10.1 percent last month.However, according to the MOC report, China's meat and cooking oil prices during the period of November 15-21 edged up because of rising demand. Prices of pork and beef rose 2.2 percent and 0.7 percent respectively, week-on-week.
