SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Two pregnant women in San Diego County have been hospitalized due to flu complications, the county's Health and Human Services Agency announced Wednesday. A 40-year-old woman spent 16 days in the intensive care unit and a 30-year-old woman spent nine days in the ICU. Both women were unvaccinated, in their third trimesters and contracted influenza A. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, pregnant women have some of the highest risk of developing flu complications if they remain unvaccinated. “That is why they're one of the groups for which vaccination isextremely important," said Dr. Wilma Wooten, the county's public health officer. "Changes in the immune system, heart and lungs during pregnancy make pregnant women (and women up to two weeks after delivery) more susceptible to severe illness from the flu, which could require hospitalization." Officials from the CDC and the Health and Human Services Agency suggest that pregnant women receive the flu vaccine at any point in their pregnancy. However, the nasal spray flu vaccine is not recommended for pregnant women. Flu cases in the county ticked up during the week of Dec. 9-15, according to the county's weekly influenza report. Confirmed flu cases totaled 290 compared to 199 the previous week. The county's overall total of confirmed flu cases is at 940, well behind the 1,641 cases at this time last flu season. Everyone 6 months or older is recommended to get the flu vaccine each year. In addition to pregnant women, health officials strongly advise the vaccination for people with a heightened risk of serious flu complications, like people older than 65 and people with chronic conditions like asthma and diabetes. County residents can get vaccinated at doctors' offices, retail pharmacies, community clinics and the county's public health centers. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A football player was badly injured during a Homecoming football game at Scripps Ranch High School Friday night. According to a witness, the injury happened five minutes into the second quarter at the 30-year line. The witness told 10News the wide receiver laid on the field for 20 minutes before an ambulance arrived to rush the student to the hospital. School officials and the victim's sister confirmed to 10News that the football player is expected to be okay. 493

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A 2015 trip Duncan Hunter and his family reportedly took to Italy was a personal vacation unrelated to his work as a member of Congress, according to new court documents. The documents state that Hunter proposed and then canceled a visit to a base in or around Naples, Italy “in conjunction with the hunter family vacation.”According to the documents, “Hunter’s primary motive in attempting to schedule the November 2015 visit to a base was to generate a pretextual purpose so that he could misrepresent his personal use of campaign funds for the family vacation.” RELATED: Federal judge denies Rep. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A 55-year-old man was arrested Friday after hitting a 19-year-old with his car following a drunken argument, San Diego Police say.According to police, the suspect, Fernando Chavez Lopez, 55, got into an argument with a 19-year-old man before 11 a.m. Friday. Lopez was reportedly drunk at the time of the dispute. After the argument ended, police say Lopez went looking for the victim, locating him crossing the street at an intersection on the 3100 block on National Avenue.Police say the suspect deliberately drove his vehicle into the victim, hitting him before taking off when police were called.Ten minutes later, officers found the suspect driving on the 1100 block of Sicard Street. He was detained and later positively identified by witnesses, police say.The victim sustained minor scrapes and bruises and was taken to the hospital.Lopez was arrested and booked into jail, police say. 919
