RAMONA, Calif. (KGTV) - The Fund for the Animals Wildlife Center is at capacity while it cares for a record number of patients.At the center, experts rehabilitate animals they hope to release back into the wild. Most of the predators are kept in the back of the 13 acre property to keep humans from imprinting on them, affecting their ability to survive after release.Staff take extreme care and 'secretly' feed their animals.From January 1to July 1, the center cared for 588 animals. As of Friday, they're currently caring for more than 100, and at capacity.Some of their animals documented in pictures provided to 10News, like an orphaned badger, the first badger the center has had in 20 years. They also have a Great-Horned Owl which was hit by a car."Our patients are one of three things, they're unfortunately orphaned, or ill or injured," director Matt Anderson said.They've seen 35 percent more patients compared to the same time last year, meaning they're caring for 154 more animals."It's what we call baby season, everybody expects it, it's a hectic time, all hands to the deck, the staff are wonderful so we're pushing forward and already have some success stories," Anderson said.The Center is funded through donations and The Humane Society of the US, those dollars critical now more than ever. Another factor behind the boom, higher rain levels meant more food all the way up the food chain."Lots more plant life, and lots more to eat for the prey items that our predators eat," he said that's also what brings predators into our neighborhoods."They're really really good at finding their own food, and so it's best to let them alone in their habitat and enjoy them from a distance," Anderson said.Reminding us how important it is to leave the animals alone so they can survive, go back into that sensitive ecosystem and keep it in balance. 1863

RANCHO PENASQUITOS -- A group of residents in Rancho Pe?asquitos is sounding the alarm about a trio of dense developments that could add 1,500 housing units within 1.5 miles of each other.The group, called PQ-NE Action, notes the northwest part of Rancho Pe?asquitos only has one road in and out. They are raising concerns that the road could not handle the influx in the case of an emergency, such as a wildfire evacuation. "We fully understand things are going to change, but not change to a point where the neighborhood becomes threatened from a safety standpoint," said Junaid Razvi, a 40-year resident and spokesman for the group. Meanwhile, Lennar is proposing to build more than 530 new housing units on the hotel's old golf course.PQ-NE Action is now calling on Councilman Mark Kersey to step in. Ray Szmanda, known to generations of Americans as the man who brought Menards commercials to life, has died at age 91.Szmanda passed away at his home in Antigo on Sunday, May 6, according to an obituary posted to Bradley Funeral Home & Crematory's website.Szmanda worked in T.V. and radio in the 1950s and operated a broadcast school in Waukesha, Wisconsin until the late 1970s, when he joined Menards as a pitchman. After a successful run, Szmanda retired as the spokesman in 1998.Menards released a statement about the loss of their beloved spokesman:"Ray Szmanda remained a steady fixture in our advertising for nearly a quarter century  until his retirement in 1998.  Still to this day, Ray’s friendly, enthusiastic and fun loving personality have made a lasting impression on our customers and all of us at Menards. We are saddened by his passing and our thoughts and prayers are with Ray’s family, friends and the millions of people who knew him as ‘The Menards Guy.'"His countless commercial appearances over the decades, as well as his distinctive voice, endeared Szmanda to many across the years."I'm having a ball; I love what I do, and I think as long as I feel that way, that message gets across on television," Szmanda once said, according to his official biography on the Menards website.Szmanda graduated from Milwaukee's Bay View High School in 1944. (KGTV) — Two people are dead following a wrong-way collision on Interstate 15 in North San Diego County late Friday.A white Hyundai Elantra heading northbound entered southbound I-15 from Deer Springs Rd. at about 11 p.m., according to California Highway Patrol. The male driver was reportedly using the fast lane as he traveled at high speed in the wrong direction, CHP said.A CHP trooper started a traffic break near State Route 76 in an attempt to stop the Hyundai, but the vehicle failed to stop for the traffic break and continued northbound. The CHP unit turned around and started following the Hyundai from the northbound side.TIMELINE: Wrong-way crashes in San Diego CountyJust before 11:30 p.m., CHP received a report of a vehicle crash near Rainbow Valley Blvd. Troopers arrived to find the Hyundai had collided with a grey Honda Civic traveling in the right direction.The female driver of the Honda, identified as a 20-year-old from Murrieta, died at the scene. The driver of the Hyundai, identified as a 23-year-old from Lake Elsinore, was taken to Palomar Medical Center, where he later died.Investigators believe impairment was a factor in the crash. The crash remained under investigation Saturday. 1262
