(AP) — A bookkeeper who worked at a Southern California high school for nearly three decades is suspected of stealing more than 0,000 from student clubs.The Riverside Press-Enterprise reported Thursday that Virginia Ellen Schaul pleaded not guilty this week to one count of grand theft. The 65-year-old was ordered back to court July 12 and released on her own recognizance.Schaul was fired in 2017 from her longtime job with Temecula Valley High after she failed to show up for a hearing looking into missing money and overdrawn accunts.Prosecutors say over at least a four-year period Schaul took money from accounts used to pay for equipment, uniforms, entry fees, travel fees and other expenses for clubs and teams. 747

Texas Democratic Senate candidate Beto O'Rourke said at a CNN town hall Thursday night that he would still vote to impeach President Donald Trump.The El Paso congressman challenging Sen. Ted Cruz said that his position on impeachment hadn't changed, even as Cruz has used the issue to galvanize conservative voters against O'Rourke's campaign.Asked by CNN's Dana Bash if he had changed his mind after saying he'd vote to impeach Trump this summer, O'Rourke said, "I haven't."He pointed to the ongoing probe into whether Trump's 2016 campaign colluded with Russia."There may be an open question as to whether the President, then the candidate, sought to collude with the Russian government in 2016," O'Rourke said. "But to quote George Will -- very conservative columnist -- when we saw him on that stage in Helsinki defending Vladimir Putin, the head of the country that attacked our democracy in 2016 instead of this country, and its citizens and this amazing democracy, that was collusion in action."He continued, "You may have wondered when he fired James Comey, the principle investigator into what happened in that election, whether that was an attempt to obstruct justice. SunTrust says a former employee may have tried to print information on about 1.5 million customers and share it with a "criminal third party."Chairman and CEO William Rogers Jr. made the announcement Friday as the regional bank released its quarterly earnings.Rogers said the bank believes the information included names and account balances, but not Social Security numbers, account numbers or passwords. He also said the bank has not identified "significant fraudulent activity" on the accounts.Rogers said this was discovered "in conjunction with law enforcement." He did not identify or elaborate on the criminal third party.SunTrust is the 12th-largest US commercial bank by assets, according to the Federal Reserve. Texas Governor Greg Abbott told KTSA radio on Monday that he plans to send nearly 1,000 Texas National Guard troops to the US/Mexico border, after already committing to send 250 troops last week. The announcement came a week after President Donald Trump said he would send the National Guard to the border. Trump said the move was needed to help secure the border. Defense Secretary James Mattis said that up to 4,000 National Guard troops could end up staffing the border.The National Guard will work in a support role along the border, as troops are not allowed to make arrests or perform law enforcement functions. Abbott said troops along the border could be "in this for the long haul.”Troops from New Mexico and Arizona also will work the border. California has yet to commit troops to the border. Although Trump wants to bolster border security, it appears that illegal border crossings are down. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials said that arrests at the border in 2017 were at a 46-year low. The decrease in arrests continues a nearly two-decade trend.  1112
