SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A woman was seriously injured when she crossed into the path of an oncoming car in Linda Vista, police said Saturday.A 72-year-old woman had just gotten off a bus at a stop on Linda Vista Road near Tait Street around 5:20 p.m., according to San Diego Police Officer Robert Heims. She walked to a marked crosswalk and began to walk across the street against the signal, Heims said.At the same time, the driver of an approaching Toyota did not stop for the pedestrian and hit her, Heims said.Paramedics were dispatched and the pedestrian was taken to a hospital. She suffered extensive head injuries, Heims said.Police don't believe drugs or alcohol were factors in the crash. 700

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A man whose altercation with four off-duty San Diego police officers in the parking lot of a Grantville bar drew attention from local activists alleging excessive force was sentenced Thursday to a three year probation term in connection with cocaine and firearm possession, which includes 90 days in jail and nine months to be served in a work furlough program.Jonathan Felix, 29, pleaded guilty last month to possession of a loaded firearm and cocaine, in connection with the Nov. 7, 2018, altercation outside McGregor's Grill and Ale House just before 2 a.m.The case generated substantial public interest regarding the use of police force rather than for the felony case, in which Felix was accused but never charged with pointing the gun at the officers, prompting them to tackle him to the ground and strike him several times until they were able to seize the pistol, according to prosecutors.RELATED: San Diego man says off-duty SDPD officers assaulted himThe blows rendered Felix unconscious, and left him with a fractured pelvis, fractured hand and cuts and bruising to his head, while one of the officers testified that he broke his hand punching the defendant.In addition to possessing cocaine, Felix was prohibited from possessing a firearm due to theft and drug-related convictions out of Arizona, according to Deputy District Attorney Michael Runyon.Following his 90 days in custody, Felix will continue working during the day at Greystone Prime Steakhouse & Seafood in the Gaslamp Quarter, where he was employed at the time of his arrest. San Diego Superior Court Judge Polly H. Shamoon imposed a suspended four-year prison sentence, meaning Felix could head to prison if he violates the terms of his probation.At a preliminary hearing in February, Officer Anthony Duncan testified that after he and other officers departed McGregor's, they noticed Felix leaving the premises and returning to the parking lot on several separate occasions, both in his Dodge Durango and on a bicycle. He said the officers were concerned that Felix was "casing" vehicles, possibly to break into or steal cars.Felix was exhibiting "odd behavior" and "something didn't feel right (about him)," Duncan said.Officer Jose Rodriguez, who was at the bar with the other men but left before the altercation with Felix, testified that he also felt Felix was looking into vehicles parked in the lot.Despite their concerns, none of the officers called for assistance from on-duty law enforcement until after they restrained Felix, according to Duncan.Duncan said that he approached Felix, at which point the defendant produced a semi-automatic handgun from his waistband and pointed it at him, prompting all four officers to draw firearms on Felix.Surveillance footage from the parking lot of the business captured the physical altercation between the men, but not the purported standoff, which was blocked from view by a parked car. The defendant, who was sitting on his bicycle at the time, backpedaled away from the men, who followed and tackled him to the ground, according to surveillance footage.Felix told investigators after being arrested that he believed the group of men, who he said never identified themselves as law enforcement officers that night, may have been casing his Durango or looking to start trouble.Defense attorney Alicia Freeze argued that her client drew his gun out of concern for his safety, but denied that he ever pointed the weapon at the group. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - An ex-con dubbed the "Bad Grandpa" bandit because of the disguise he wore while robbing four banks in San Diego is scheduled to be sentenced today at the downtown courthouse.James Saputo, 51, pleaded guilty in June to robbery, attempted robbery and other charges. He faces more than 130 years to life in prison.Saputo was arrested twice in 2016 on drug charges and was out of custody on bail when he committed the bank robberies in San Diego between Feb. 12 and March 30 last year, said Deputy District Attorney Lucy Yturralde.The defendant is also accused of robbing seven banks in Riverside and Orange counties, the prosecutor said.Authorities nicknamed Saputo the "Bad Grandpa" bandit because of the elderly disguise he wore, which included a wig, glasses and a cane.Saputo's criminal record dates back to 1986. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Authorities Tuesday publicly identified a 71-year-old man who was killed in a collision at a Rancho Bernardo intersection.John Atcheson of San Diego was turning from Meandro Drive onto Rancho Bernardo Road when an eastbound 2001 Toyota Tacoma pickup truck crashed into his 2018 Chevrolet Volt shortly before 6:30 p.m. Monday, according the county Medical Examiner's Office.Medics took Atcheson to Palomar Medical Center in Escondido, where he was pronounced dead.The other motorist, a 23-year-old woman, was hospitalized for treatment of broken bones, police said. 590

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - For the fourth time in a week, San Diego County public health officials reported a record-high number of daily COVID-19 cases, with 440 new positive cases recorded Friday.It's the fifth time in six days that health authorities reported more than 300 new COVID-19 cases and the first day yet with new cases topping 400. The total number of cases recorded since the pandemic began is now 12,401, and with six additional deaths reported Friday, the number of deaths increased to 358.Of those deaths, four men and two women died between June 13 and June 24, and ranged in age from late 50s to mid-90s. All had underlying medical conditions.The county recorded 6,824 COVID-19 tests Friday, 6% of which returned positive. The 14-day rolling average positive test rate is 3.4%.More than 300 cases were reported on Sunday, Monday, Wednesday and Thursday this week.Another community outbreak was reported Friday in a business, bringing the number reported in the last week to six -- falling below the threshold the county set in a set of 13 "triggers" announced earlier this month for the first time since June 18.Community-transmitted COVID-19 outbreaks activated one of those triggers on that date, placing a pause on any additional openings allowed by the state.The county could take industry-specific actions, pause all reopening efforts or even dial back reopenings if enough of the metrics rise above a certain threshold.
