Americans are trying to form better financial habits in light of the recession, building emergency savings and paying down debt. However, many are finding savings accounts are now returning next to nothing in interest. That's because of the Federal Reserve's decision to keep interest rates low.Rates that were over 2.5% a year ago are down to under 1% now. But there are some other accounts that can get you a better return.“Something known as a rewards checking account might be a better option,” said Greg McBride, Chief Financial Analyst at Bankrate.com. “These are accounts that typically pay higher yields, higher than even online savings accounts, you might find 1.5, 2, 2.5%, but you have to meet certain qualifications each month to earn that deal.”Rewards checking accounts typically are offered by smaller community banks and credit unions. They usually come with monthly requirements though, like direct deposit, online bill pay, enrolling in e-statements, and using your debit card a certain amount of times. But those are things many people already use.In terms of saving versus paying down debt now, experts say to save.“That's really critical. No one knows what’s going to happen down the road in terms of jobs or income, so having some money put away will help you sleep at night,” said McBride.Just to give you an idea, you could make by saving around ,000 a year at 3% interest rate, which a rewards account might pay. That’s compared to just 60 cents in an average savings account, which only has about a .06% interest rate. 1556

ANAHEIM, Calif. (CNS) - A massive brawl broke out Wednesday at the new Cambria Hotel & Suites in Anaheim involving as many as 100 people, police said. Two people were arrested and two people were taken to a hospital with non-life threatening laceration injuries, Anaheim Police Sgt. Shane Carringer told City News Service. One victim is a boy and the other is a woman, he said.Officers were sent to the hotel at 101 E. Katella Ave., a couple blocks from Disneyland, at about 12:40 p.m. They found about 40 people fighting outside the hotel in the parking lot of the main entrance and up to 60 more fighting inside the lobby, Carringer said. The hotel was placed on lockdown while officers determined whether anyone needed further medical assistance. Ten Orange County sheriff's deputies were called to help sort out the crowd, Carringer said.Police said the situation was cleared at about 3 p.m., but the investigation into what caused the violence was ongoing. Two people were arrested for fighting in public, said Carringer, who added that it appeared the melee involved multiple patrons at the hotel and was not confined to one group of people.Carringer told the OC Register that the fight involved "men and women, adults and juveniles," adding that "it sounds like people had broomsticks and whatever objects they could find in the hotel."The sergeant told CNS that it appeared the fight started at the hotel pool and spilled into other areas. According to KTLA5, the melee began when some children were playing and one of them was pushed into the water, landing on another child. The hotel recently opened and includes a water park, Carringer said. But there have been problems there with two near-drownings in the past two weeks, he said.It also appears that hotel officials were not enforcing COVID-19 guidelines such as social distancing and mask wearing, so city officials will be working with county health officials and other inspectors to get the hotel to better comply with the state's guidelines, Carringer said. 2034
Army officials at Fort Hood confirmed the identity of a soldier who was a suspect in the disappearance of Pfc. Vanessa Guillen who died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound on Wednesday morning during a confrontation with police.Officials with the Army Criminal Investigation Division (CID) confirmed the suspect who died Wednesday morning was Aaron Robinson. They also confirmed a second suspect — the estranged wife of a Fort Hood soldier — is also in custody in the Bell County Jail.CID declined to identify the name of the civilian suspect because it was "not in their jurisdiction."CID officials said Robinson and the civilian suspect are currently the only two suspects connected with the case. Officials said social media reports of a third suspect in the case were "irresponsible."The press conference took place a day after Guillen's family claimed that the missing soldier had reported to them before she disappeared that she had been sexually harassed. While CID said Thursday that an investigation into those allegations remains open, they have not yet found credible evidence of harassment.CID also refuted the family's claim that Robinson had harassed Guillen and that Robinson was Guillen's superior officer.Guillen went missing from Fort Hood on April 22. It wasn't until late June that the Army said it suspected foul play in connection with Guillen's death.Army officials reported earlier this week that human remains were found in connection with the search. Maj. Gen. Scott Efflandt, III said Thursday that the remains have not yet been confirmed to be those of Guillen. 1596
Apparently watching the Democratic National Convention from the White House, President Donald Trump sent out three tweets late Wednesday in all caps in as he faced sharp criticism from Democrats during the convention. The attacks came frequently and with vigor among the Democratic speakers, headlined by Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton, and vice presidential nominee Kamala Harris. Two of his tweets were apparently directed toward Obama. In one of the tweets, Trump repeated a claim that Obama spied on the Trump campaign in 2016. While intelligence officials did monitor contacts between the Trump campaign and Russian oligarchs, there is no evidence that Obama directed the intelligence community to spy on Trump. 721
