The survey adds that only 9 percent of singles are looking to date casually.With that in mind, San Diego ranked as the second best city for cuffing, behind only Indianapolis. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - It was an emotional day in a Southern California courtroom for the family of a murdered Army veteran.Nearly 20 people who were close to Julia Jacobson read victim-impact statements during the sentencing hearing for her killer, ex-husband Dalen Ware.Julia’s brother, Tony Jacobson, spoke exclusively with 10News reporter Jennifer Kastner. “It was kind of both a celebration to her as well as an understanding that this isn't just some random person. It really is someone that truly did touch her community, served her country and people really did love her very much. Unfortunately, [Ware] took her away from us all,” says Tony Jacobson of his own impact statement that he read in the courtroom.RELATED: Ex-husband of former Army veteran pleads guiltyWare will serve 15 years to life in prison, after pleading guilty to her murder. It was more than a year ago that the retired Army captain and her dog disappeared over Labor Day weekend.Her SUV was discovered abandoned near her home in University Heights. When she would laugh, she would snort a little bit which was makes it sound so embarrassing for her but it was one of her things that made her so personable,” adds Tony. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- In 2014, the Whittingtons shared their story about their first-born child in a video that went viral.Ryland was born a girl. “As soon as Ryland could speak, she would scream, ‘I am a boy!’” the video explained. As Ryland got older, the feelings got stronger.After consulting professionals and experts, parents Jeff and Hillary Whittington came to the conclusion Ryland was transgender. For their child’s well-being, they decided to allow him to transition as soon as possible.Today, the YouTube video about Ryland's journey has more than 8 million views.In a 2016 interview with 10News, Jeff Whittington explained some of the criticism his family received. “They think that this is something that just happened overnight. We just made this split-second decision and our son said, ‘I feel like a boy.’ And we said great. And that wasn’t the case,” he said.Hillary Whittington wrote a book about their journey, Raising Ryland."I think people are definitely opening their minds a lot more,” Hillary Whittington said, as she reflected on their family’s journey over the past several years.Jeff explained how they try to deal with those who do not agree with their family’s decision. “We recognize that a lot of that comes from background, stories, and experiences they’ve had. We tend to take that negativity and try and understand what the source of that may be and try and find empathy for those that are critical,” he said.Ryland, now 12-years-old, said he is comfortable with his story being so public. “I know it helps a lot of people,” he said.Last year, his family hosted a “coming out party” to share with loved ones. Ryland gave a speech in front of his friends and others close to him. “It’s not a secret, but for many years I’ve kept it private because I was afraid you might treat me differently or not look at me the same if you knew,” he said. “When I was born, the doctors told me that I was a girl. But they were wrong. In my head and in my heart, I’ve always been a boy.”Ryland is about to enter seventh grade. He loves math and sports—his favorites are ice hockey and lacrosse.He shared what Pride month means to him. “Pride month is just a month of showing who you are and showing that you support who people want to be,” Ryland said.“We’re grateful for who our kids are. How women and men feel about dating locally may give us an idea about why the city ranked where it did. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Major decisions that could boost - or deal a real blow - to Republican candidates running for state offices about to be made in San Diego.It's because the California G.O.P. Convention kicks off Friday at the Sheraton Harbor Island. About 1,000 Republican delegates will be voting on a variety of endorsements for this year's ballot.G.O.P. gubernatorial candidates like Travis Allen and John Cox will attend, hoping to earn enough delegate votes for the party's endorsement for this year's election.The party is focussed only on state offices and initiatives - such as repealing the gas tax, said Cynthia Bryant, the state party's executive director.This is San Diego's second major political convention leading up to the June primary. The Democrats held their statewide convention here in February - with a who's who of national politicians.It was also the site of major news when the party declined to endorse Sen. Dianne Feinstein in her bid for re-election.The big difference for Republicans is that the party will not be taking up major federal issues like gun rights and immigration, Bryant said. The state party also won't be adopting a platform. Instead, Republicans will be focussing on the big decisions in the state - like repealing the recent 12 cent per gallon gas tax hike.They'll also be endorsing candidates for Governor, Lt. Governor, and attorney general. Still, Thad Kousser, who chairs the political science department at UC San Diego, says a lot of the decisions made could shape whether the Republicans can recruit new members. "Is this going to be a red meat crowd that really responds only to the visceral issues of immigrations? Or is it going to be a more strategic party that responds to issues that could help Republicans expand their base?" Kousser said. There are some closely watched congressional elections in San Diego County, including who will replace Republican Congressman Darrell Issa in the 49th district, and whether G.O.P Rep.
