SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A woman's trip to Mission Bay ended with her, and her car, soaked.The woman, who identified herself as Candy, said she was next to her car on a boat ramp preparing to unload her kayak for a day of fishing and roaming around Mission Bay. Suddenly, her 2002 Audi convertible started rolling as she was unloading gear.Candy jumped into the car and road it into the bay as she tried to get her emergency brake to engage."It just wouldn't. It just kept on going," Candy told 10News. "I was standing straight up in it as it was going down ... quite a scene, I'm sure."The car started sinking into the bay with Candy still inside, before she jumped out to swim back to shore. Her lunch and kayak floated to the other side of the bay as her car became completely submerged, she told 10News."I'm going to have plenty of fish now," she joked. "It's not a big deal, things happen."Two tow trucks were able to fish Candy's vehicle out of the bay and San Diego Lifeguards retrieved her car and kayak, in which she had left her purse and lunch.Candy said she had just purchased the car in November.San Diego Lifeguards reminded locals to exercise caution while using boat ramps. 1216

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A woman visiting San Diego to spend time with her daughter is dead after being struck by a car near San Diego State University Friday evening. San Diego Police Department says the woman was hit at the 4800 block of College Avenue just south of Montezuma Road in the College Area at approximately 7:45 p.m. The 48-year-old female victim was transported to an area hospital where she died. Police say the victim was not using a crosswalk when she was struck in the number two northbound lane of College Ave.The driver fled the scene according to SDPD but returned about an hour later.The driver is a 40-year-old female and detectives say they are still determining if this will continue to be classified as a hit-and-run.Police expect the intersection to be shut down for several hours. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A tortoise no longer on the loose is still waiting for its rightful owner in East County.The tortoise, believed to be an older male, was found Thursday by Heartland Paramedics.It was roaming the streets of El Cajon and is now staying at the El Cajon Animal Shelter.Workers there say this is not a situation they often face.“Not in the City of El Cajon," said Shelter Manager Jill Jones. "Perhaps in outer-lying counties, they have a little more tortoise traffic, but we generally do not."A family who saw the original 10News story believed the tortoise was their beloved pet Frankie who went missing a week ago. However, upon arrival at the shelter, they quickly realized this tortoise was much larger.If you believe the tortoise is yours, you can go to the shelter during regular business hours. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A San Diego woman says she was the victim of a violent attack inside her hotel room at the high-end Omni La Costa Resort and Spa in Carlsbad.In an exclusive interview with 10News, Jacquee Renna is accusing the front desk staff of handing out her room number and a key without her permission. The hotel is staying tight-lipped with 10News about the apparent security breach, but it's giving details to the courts."I haven't felt safe since then," Renna tells Team 10 Investigative Reporter Jennifer Kastner. "Suddenly, I heard the door kind of jiggle and I thought [room service] was coming to get our plates," she explains. She and her boyfriend were finishing dinner inside their hotel room when she says her ex-husband was able to unlock the door and break through the security latch."I saw the key in his hands so he had the key," she tells us. "He threw me over onto the bed. I could see rage in his face."Court documents claim her ex-husband punched her boyfriend in the face, dragged him at least twenty feet and kicked him in the head. Renna says her ex-husband then ran out to the parking lot, where he apparently slashed her boyfriend's tires, before leaving."[My boyfriend] had bruises and scrapes. I think we were both really in shock," she says. "The Omni has a responsibility to provide safe and secure rooms to their guests," says her attorney, Robert Fitzpatrick. He's helping her sue the hotel chain for negligence.Renna says that after the attack, the hotel manager apologized to her and said the hotel's front desk person had given the key to her ex-husband. Fitzpatrick adds, "Omni should never have given a key to the hotel room and they should have not disclosed the hotel room number."Hotel room attacks are uncommon but have made headlines in Southern California.Earlier this year, Covina police say security video caught a pastor lurking outside a Los Angeles hotel room, touching himself as he watched two girls who were alone inside. Officers report he later forced his way into the room and assaulted an 11-year-old. He was charged, but has pleaded "not guilty".Disturbing 2014 security video out of Kern County captured a front desk worker handing a room key to a man accused of posing as a female guest's boyfriend, before he reportedly fumbled with the room's peep hole, went inside, and sexually assaulted the woman while she was sleeping. He's seen running out with his pants around his ankles. He was convicted and a jury found that the hotel was partially responsible for the assault.It begs the question, who is responsible for making sure hotels in San Diego are keeping guests safe? To get answers, Team10 spoke to the San Diego Hotel-Motel Association, the San Diego Tourism Authority, local hotel negligence attorneys and private security professionals. None of them knew of any local, state or federal authority that has oversight. Hotels are left to police themselves. The Omni Hotel chain denied our request for an interview to discuss the new lawsuit, citing that it doesn't talk about pending litigation. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — An Escondido Union School District school is suspending on-campus operations for the rest of the month after three positive COVID-19 tests.Three people in the Pioneer School community tested positive for the virus in separate, unrelated instances off-campus. Due to this, and the high case rate in the surrounding area, the school district says it is temporarily suspending all on-campus activities at Pioneer School through Nov. 30.The suspension includes pausing the school's hybrid instruction model and extended care, and moving students to virtual learning. The school's distribution of free, to-go meals will continue."EUSD’s decision to suspend on-campus learning at Pioneer School was not directed by a public health department. County health officials have continued to express confidence in EUSD’s health and safety protocols. This decision was made to ensure the stability of the educational program offered to our students, as well as to continue our commitment to ensuring the health and safety of our students and employees," a district statement read.The school says the campus closure will affect 449 students.
