Lending a helping hand is what Stephen Peth loves to do. Peth spends a lot of his time in the rehabilitation unit at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland, helping wounded warriors get back on their feet. "The job is basically to do whatever we can to help the therapist," Peth explains. At 72 years old, Peth couldn't imagine any other way to spend his time. “I could be out on a golf course doing something for me, but to be here and be working for these wonderful service people that are here for a variety of reasons, to me, that’s inspirational,” he says. Peth says he’s inspired by all the patients he sees, because, he too, was once a warrior wounded in combat. "This is the boot that I was wearing the day that I got shot," he says. In 1967, 11 months into his tour during the Vietnam War, Peth, an army rescue helicopter pilot, was attacked by gunfire. "We took 39 hits on the aircraft,” he recalls. “I took a round through my boot and took a round though my arm." That dangerous mission earned him one of the highest awards of valor. "Gen. Craton Abrams came out and pinned a Silver Star on me," he says.His award and scars serve as reminders that he was once where these war heroes are now, compelling him find a way to serve his country once more. 1305

TAMPA, Fla. — A 10-year-old girl is making a big difference in the City of Tampa.Vivian Anderson wrote a letter to Tampa Mayor Jane Castor in December 2019 after seeing a “Men Working” sign at a construction site where men and women were working side-by-side.“Well I didn’t really like how it was excluding the women,” said Vivian.In her letter, Vivian suggested the sign should be more inclusive and say “Workers Present” instead. Days, weeks and months went by without a response from the mayor’s office.“I was thinking she probably wasn’t gonna get it,” said Vivian.“I told her the wheels of government work slow and that it takes time and we’ll just have to wait to see what happens,” said Mary Anderson, Vivian’s mom.Finally, a letter arrived and Vivian was thrilled.“Happy, really, excited. I started screaming in the living room,” she said.The city is now ensuring that inclusive signage is required instead of “Men at Work.” Vik Bhide, Mobility Department Director, says that will be done during the design review, permit review and coordination of work on all projects. Bhide says the city phased out that type of signage years ago, but they’re now making sure other companies and contractors are on the same page.Adding to Vivian’s excitement, a second letter arrived in the mail inviting her to meet with Mayor Castor.During the meeting, Vivian was presented with a hard hat and two signs. ARLINGTON, Va. – Within an hour of a food bank’s opening came a delivery organizers have been counting on: frozen chicken by the pallet. “Two weeks ago, we began preparations for the future,” said Charles Meng, director of the Arlington Food Assistance Center in Virginia. Meng remembers the last time they encountered a sudden spike in need – right after 9/11. “We saw a very significant increase at that time,” he said. “And so, this is just that on steroids.” The center typically serves about 80,000 pounds of food to 2,400 families a week. One-third of those they help are children under 18, but the numbers are starting to climb. “We expect to see is many more of those families come to us. That's really going to be the first bump up,” Meng said. Like many food banks across the country, the economic conditions brought on by the coronavirus are stretching their resources and those of families all over the country. “It will last them until we come back on Friday and I don’t have to worry about what they’re eating,” said one parent, Sarah Baldrick, who was in Ohio picking up food, during a distribution at a local school there. There is some cause for concern, though, when it comes to food bank donations. So far, the food assistance center says they are still getting help from corporations, companies and individuals. However, they are seeing trouble from some supermarkets. “That amounts, in our case, to about 40-percent of the food we distribute -- have all but dried up,” Meng said of the food bank’s supermarket donations. “So, we're going to have to significantly increase the purchasing of food for our families.” That means they now have to count on monetary donations to buy food for those in need, at a time when people’s pocketbooks are taking a hit. “I'm relying on the generosity of this community,” Meng said. “We all have a need to survive this time.” It is a time that’s now filled with uncertainty.For more information on the Arlington Food Assistance Center, 2004
