PUEBLO, Colo. — The Colorado State Patrol said two people are dead and several injured following a crash involving a charter bus that was transporting 10 children and five adults on Interstate 25 near Pueblo, Colorado, Sunday afternoon. The bus, carrying a group from a New Mexico Catholic organization, was traveling southbound when it veered off the highway and struck part of a bridge embankment structure around 2:30 p.m. near mile marker 109, about 10 miles north of Pueblo. The 22-year-old male bus driver and another person, whose age and name is unknown, were killed in the crash. The 13 other passengers suffered injuries ranging from minor to critical, State Patrol Sgt. Blake White said during a Sunday evening briefing.State Patrol Cpl. Ivan Alvarado said the unidentified driver might have suffered a medical incident, possibly a seizure. He was ejected from the bus when it veered west off the roadway and struck the dirt embankment, Alvarado said. The front of the bus sustained significant damage, leading to the two deaths, he said. The group on the bus were from the Aquinas Newman Center at the University of New Mexico. They were returning home to New Mexico from the Steubenville of the Rockies Catholic conference in Denver when the crash occurred. The Denver Archdiocese released the following statement:“We offer our prayers tonight for everyone involved in the tragic bus accident this afternoon near Pueblo. We especially send our prayers and deepest condolences to the families and friends of those who were killed, and our prayers for healing and comfort for those who were injured.”The CSP said three medical helicopters responded and dozens of ambulance and fire crews transported occupants of the bus to hospitals. WALLOPS ISLAND, Va. – It is pretty to look at, but at times, treacherous to encounter: when snowstorms wreak havoc on the ground, it can come with a cost. Yet, because of limited research, snowstorms are not as well-understood as other weather phenomenon. That’s about to change. Inside a noisy hangar at NASA’s Wallops Island facility in Virginia sits a specially outfitted P-3 aircraft, also known as a “snow chaser.” “Snow can have a huge economic impact,” said Lynn McMurdie, principal investigator for a new research project called IMPACTS. “To be able to fly inside the clouds, where the snowflakes form, enables us to study the processes that go into forming the snowflakes that eventually fall down to the earth as snowfall in your backyard.” It’s all part of a five-year, million research project called IMPACTS, which stands for Investigation of Microphysics and Precipitation for Atlantic Coast-Threatening Snowstorms. The team is embarking on its first snowstorm chasing flights this month. “It gets a bit turbulent. The plane is very capable and has great de-icing systems,” said Gerrit Everson, chief of flight operations at Wallops Flight Facility and a NASA pilot. “We would never put our crew or our passengers or the scientists in an unsafe position. So, we do a very good job at mitigating the risk. But, yeah, you do have to be willing to accept a certain degree of turbulence and bumps here and there.” It’s been 30 years since there’s been a major study of snowstorms like this one. What researchers are hoping to find out this time around isn’t just where the snow is going to fall, but how intense that snowfall might be. “People think the forecasting is really easy and simple, but it's actually very complicated,” McMurdie said. “Hopefully, we will be doing a better job so we can help joe citizen know what to do when there is a storm threatening.” Beyond that, scientists hope to also learn how snowfall can impact the water supply all over the planet. “We need water to survive and we need to understand how the water goes through the whole earth system,” McMurdie said.It’s a global ecosystem where winter wonderlands play a crucial part. 2186

Surveillance systems are popping up everywhere. And in Sherman Oaks, California, a suburb of Los Angeles, some people have big concerns about privately-owned license plate readers recording cars on public streets. “It could be turned bad very quickly,” said homeowner Paul Diamond. Diamond calls these cameras an invasion of his personal privacy. “It does tend to disquiet me that everyone will know everything about where everybody is at any one time,” he said. Security experts say these privacy concerns are legit. “Are they aware that their vehicles are being videotaped? And are they ok with that? And are they ok with essentially private citizens essentially reviewing that tape at will,” asked Steve Beaty, a professor of computer science at Metropolitan State University (MSU) Denver. Beaty says license plate readers have been around for years but up until recently only law enforcement had access to them. “I think what’s new is a lot of this technology is being private people’s hands and in private people’s purview,” he said. Private citizens like Robert Shontell who with a couple dozen of his neighbors bought these cameras and software from the company Flock Safety. While Shontell says these cameras gives him peace of mind, he does address his neighbor’s privacy concerns. “You don’t want somebody that does searches to see what time their neighbor came home last night. You don’t want that. We don’t want that,” he said. “So, what we did was pick three people who have access.” That’s three people that have access to video of every single vehicle that drives by one of the cameras. Flock Safety says they built this technology not to create a surveillance state but rather crackdown on crime and they claim they have the numbers to prove it’s working. “We have these statistics like a 33% reduction or a 66% reduction in crime,” said Garrett Langley, Flock Safety CEO. “That’s not arrests that’s just crime not happening.” Langley says a camera and software cost about ,000 and that they’ve helped thousands of people since launching two years ago. “You fast forward to today we’ve got customers across 36 states including Hawaii,” he said. “And we make about five arrests an hour with our law enforcement partners.” Partners like the Redlands Police Department who had several Flock cameras donated to them by the public. “The license plate readers have been pivotal in several of our cases,” said Redlands Police Chief Travis Martinez. “We’ve caught vehicles that have fled armed robberies, Commercial nighttime window smash burglaries of restaurants.” Martinez says his department has made dozens of arrests since using Flock Safety cameras a few months ago. “It’s so great to be able to tell victims of crime that we do have a lead, we do have something that we can investigate,” he said. Martinez says all Flock video automatically deletes after 30 days. But for people like Diamond, however, the potential for misuse and abuse has a longer impact.“Authoritarianism in general,” he said about what scares him the most. “There’s a sense of it creeping over the country I’m not happy about.” 3165
