KANSAS CITY, Mo. – A Kansas City FBI agent who rushed to help survivors at the Pentagon on 9/11 died Thursday from brain cancer.Melissa S. Morrow, 48, died after a long battle with the disease. Morrow was certified by The World Trade Center Health Program and the 9/11 Victim Compensation Fund, and as a result of her actions on 9/11, her death is classified as a line of duty death.Morrow was working in the FBI’s Washington Field Office at the time of the attack.When the plane hit the Pentagon, Morrow, who was 31 at the time, responded to the crash site and spent the next 10 weeks there and at an evidence warehouse. During those 10 weeks, Morrow was exposed to hazardous contaminants.Les Kerry, Team Leader of the Missouri Law Enforcement Funeral Assistance Team, said that Special Agent Morrow’s death is a chilling reminder that the 9/11 tragedy continues to take lives. “Just an average citizen who didn’t know her, it’s going to bring back some memories of where you were that day of the tragedy and the travesty that took place on 911 and the days and months to follow,” said Kerry.  Morrow served in the Kansas City office from 2010 to 2018.She will be given a hero’s burial with bagpipes playing taps, a 21 gun salute, and a flyover. Morrow is survived by her mother, father and sister.Visitation is scheduled from 1:30 p.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesday, March 27 at Country Club Christian Church, 6101 Ward Parkway, Kansas City, Missouri. Just 12 days ago, residents on the US island territory of Puerto Rico were sideswiped by then Category 5 Hurricane Irma. Even with the eye of Irma missing Puerto Rico by 50 miles, the storm knocked out power and did damage. As Category 5 Hurricane Maria churns in the Caribbean late Tuesday, it is expected to strike the island head on. As of Tuesday evening, Maria had top winds of 175 MPH and a minimum pressure of 909 MBs. Although Hurricane Irma had top sustained winds of 185 MPH, Irma's pressure never dropped below 914 MBs. In preparation, President Donald Trump has ordered an emergency declaration, freeing up disaster resources. FEMA Director Brock Long said that the agency is sending extra supplies to the US Virgin Islands, and the Virginia Task Force 1 urban search and rescue team is remaining in Puerto Rico.Puerto Rico Governor Ricardo Rossello told NPR that the territory has opened 500 shelter and is expecting "severe devastation.""Our main focus is to shift focus from the recovery process of Irma to make sure everyone is in a safe shelter," Rossello said. Adding to the potential disaster, Puerto Rico's mountainous terrain could cause landslides. KANSAS CITY, Mo. - When you think of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, a polling place probably doesn't come to mind.However, maintaining the security of our elections is a major function of the agency."One of the most important things we do is to protect citizens' constitutional right to vote," C.J. Sanders, an FBI Supervisory Special Agent, said.The FBI accomplishes this by working with the Department of Homeland Security, the United States Postal Inspection Service, secretaries of state and local election officials.According to Sanders, the FBI will set up command posts in Kansas City, Jefferson City, and Topeka to respond to any allegations of voter fraud.It's the same set up the agency has utilized in previous elections, and Sanders emphasized voters should have confidence in the system, even if more people are voting by mail this time around."There's not much different this year than we've had in years past," he said, "We've always had mail-in ballots and voting in person with the machines."According to experts at the Brennan Center for Justice, a nonpartisan policy group at New York University, 25 percent of all votes were cast by mail in the last two federal elections."Mail ballots are paper ballots. JUPITER, Fla. — Groundbreaking research out of the Scripps Research Institute in Jupiter, Florida found a genetic explanation for the pain processing and sensory issues some children living with autism face."To see the biology in the lab turn out that has parallels to what’s going on in these children takes it so far beyond just an academic endeavor," said Dr. Gavin Rumbaugh, a neuroscientist at Scripps. "You go home every day thinking, unbelievably, I may actually be making a difference in someone's life."One of those children who Rumbaugh hopes to help with his research is 10-year-old Beckett, who lives in Texas."We wanted to understand generally in the lab how genes like SYNGAP1 affect the way the brain functions and we thought what better way was then to look and see how this gene may directly affect sensory processing, and then further on ask the question, 'Does the change in sensory processing actually lead directly to learning, memory and behavioral impairment?' " he said.Beckett has a genetic mutation of SYNGAP1, which researchers have now found causes certain issues he faces, particularly, having an extremely high pain threshold while also experiencing heightened sensitivity to another kind of stimuli. Beckett and other children living with this genetic mutation also often have epilepsy."It's all about quality of life. Everybody deserves to live their best life and that's my mission," said Monica Weldon, Beckett's mom.Weldon said the research being done in Jupiter could change her son's life and the lives of hundreds of other children around the world with the same genetic abnormality and symptoms, some of whom whose families she's connected with online."That is the power I believe of a patient group that is motivated to find treatments for their loved ones," Weldon said.
