SANTEE. Calif. (KGTV) - Two dogs have died after a fire broke out in an East County home.The fire broke out at a home on Big Rock Road and Rancho Fanita Drive just before 2 p.m. Wednesday. The fire started in the home's kitchen, according to Santee Fire Department crews.Neighbors said they first saw smoke and though the fire was in a large field behind the home, before realizing it was in a corner of the house.One neighbor reportedly ran over and called the home's owner, who was not home but told the neighbor her dogs were inside. The neighbor broke a window out and tried to get into the home to save the dogs but was pushed back because of the thick smoke.Santee Fire arrived and broke into the back of the home to put out the blaze. Crews found the dogs and performed CPR and gave them oxygen but they had already died.Crews said the neighbor was right not to enter the home if the smoke was as bad as described. The cause of the fire is under investigation.The owner of the home reportedly lives there with her daughter and son-in-law. 1073

SAN YSIDRO, Calif. (KGTV) - A San Diego Police motorcycle officer suffered leg injuries after being struck by a vehicle in the South Bay Friday.The collision was reported just before 10 a.m. on westbound SR-905 at I-805. The officer was conducting a vehicle stop of a red SUV when a white pickup collided with the officer's motorcycle. The motorcycle then collided with the SUV, knocking the officer 70 feet down an embankment.The officer was able to call in the collision on their own. The officer was transported to UCSD Medical Center with leg injuries of unknown severity.10NEWS LIVE TRAFFIC CONDITIONSThe driver of the truck remained at the scene. SANTA MONICA (KGTV) - A woman died and two people were injured Saturday in a shooting near the Santa Monica Pier.Santa Monica Police say two groups of people traveling on party buses were involved in a fight which led to the shooting near Ocean and Colorado Avenues about 1 a.m.Officers are looking for as many as four suspects who ran from the scene.The two injured victims are expected to recover, police said. 425

(KGTV) - Several immigrants' rights groups allege harassment and one man says he was strip-searched by Customs and Border Protection agents.The Southern Poverty Law Center, the Center for Constitutional Rights, and the American Immigration Council filed a motion requesting more information from the U.S. government regarding the detention of the Director of Al Otro Lado, calling their acts retaliation for helping asylum seekers.Hugo Castro, Director of Border Angels, Tijuana, spoke with 10News about his experience last December."I was sent to secondary for no reason," Castro said. He was in Mexicali for a doctor's appointment when he was detained by a CBP officer."The officer searched me, said I didn't have a weapon and was trying to grab me and I said hey, you don't need to grab me, just tell me what to do," He said the next 5 hours were unnerving. "They took my cellphone... after that they searched me, body search, and took off my shoes and look all around my, through my pants and underwear," he said looking at the ground.Castro said he was interrogated about migrants and the immigration rights' group Al Otro Lado."You know, if I was part of the caravan the organizers. If we were paying migrants, if we were helping migrants to cross the border."Castro said he explained to the officer he helps bring donations to nine shelters in Tijuana. Castro said he was detained for five and a half hours. SAN ONOFRE, Calif. (KGTV) - On Tuesday, two Southern California congressmen toured the shuttered San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station, or SONGS. There was an announcement made to the press about new legislation, amid environmental and safety concerns at the facility.Representative Harley Rouda (D-CA-48) told reporters, “We both recognize that we have an issue here.” He and Representative Mike Levin (D-CA-49) got a firsthand look at the controversial conditions inside SONGS. The two representatives serve districts that cover north coastal San Diego into Orange County, where SONGS is located. “Today, I’m pleased to announce that when I return to Washington, I’ll be introducing new legislation to ensure the spent fuel here at SONGS receives top priority from the federal government for disposal,” said Rep. Levin. His newest effort will be called the Spent Fuel Prioritization bill. To decommission the power plant, crews have been transferring spent nuclear fuel into square vaults on the beach until the government figures out what to do with them, next, which will likely involve transferring them to a remote, out-of-state location. The congressmen are calling for more federal oversight after safety concerns were raised about the integrity of the fuel storage canisters. Additionally, last summer a loaded canister was nearly dropped several feet. “I think there's dispute and well-intentioned dispute about what the outcome would have been had that 18-foot drop occurred,” adds Rep. Levin.SONGS’ operator, Southern California Edison, sent 10News the following statement: “Southern California Edison welcomes the congressmen’s efforts to develop solutions to the issues of transportation and long-term storage of spent nuclear fuel. SCE has been safely storing spent nuclear fuel on site at SONGS for nearly 50 years. We will continue to store spent nuclear fuel here safely until it is moved off site to a federally licensed facility.”“It should be important to you and certainly to your children and grandchildren,” said Rep.
