SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The San Diego County Health and Human Services Agency is working in close collaboration with MiraCosta College and San Diego City College officials to notify people who were possibly exposed to tuberculosis in two unrelated cases. The period of possible exposure at the MiraCosta College Community Learning Center, 1831 Mission Ave, Oceanside, was from August 20, 2018 to November 15, 2018. No-cost testing will be offered to identified students on December 12, 2018 from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at the Community Learning Center campus. The potential exposure at San Diego City College, 1313 Park Blvd, San Diego, was from September 14, 2018 to October 10, 2018. No-cost testing for identified students will take place on Thursday, December 13, 2018 from 6:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at the college. For both exposures, identified faculty and staff will be tested by their respective occupational health programs.“Symptoms of active tuberculosis include persistent cough, fever, night sweats and unexplained weight loss and can be treated and cured with medication,” said Wilma Wooten, M.D., M.P.H., County public health officer. “Most people who are exposed do not become infected but those who are can prevent disease by taking medication.”For people with symptoms of TB, or who are immune-compromised, it is important that they see their medical provider to rule out TB.If you would like more information on this potential exposure are asked to call: MiraCosta College Community Learning Center at (760) 795-6675San Diego City College at (619) 388-6922County TB Control Program at (619) 692-8621The number of annual TB cases in San Diego County has decreased since the early 1990s and has stabilized in recent years. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - San Diego Unified School District officials joined local House members Thursday to urge the Senate to pass a bill to secure funding they say is necessary to reopen schools safely amid the COVID-19 pandemic. The school district and local elected officials said the HEROES Act's passage would bolster efforts to obtain what they said are much-needed protective measures in order to begin in-person learning.Though San Diego County schools were given the green light to reopen this week, its largest school district started the new school year online due to safety concerns regarding the virus.SDUSD Superintendent Cindy Marten said the district has made efforts to ensure student access to remote learning capabilities and school meals, but its ultimate goal is to reopen all campuses for in-person learning. However, she said more funding is needed in order to do so safely.Marten said the district will need to purchase more personal protective equipment, increase cleaning and daily health checks, and make safety modifications to numerous school buildings in order to address safety obstacles presented by the pandemic.Kisha Borden, president of the San Diego Education Association, the union representing the district's teachers, said many of the resources needed for in-person learning "require additional funding that our schools simply do not have and did not budget for."The House of Representatives passed the HEROES Act in May, but it still requires Senate approval. The proposal allocates billion for kindergarten through 12th grade education. The counter-proposal HEALS Act would earmark billion for schools, though critics say much of the funding will go to schools that commit to physically reopening.Reps. Susan Davis, Scott Peters and Juan Vargas were among those calling for the bill's passage with district officials on Thursday."We have the best students. We have the best teachers here in California. They want to teach and these kids want to learn, but they need a safe environment," Vargas, D-San Diego, said.San Diego Unified is slated to provide a limited capacity in-person program for disadvantaged and high-needs elementary students starting later this month, but it's uncertain whether or when in-person reopening would expand past that initial phase.Marten said that in addition to physical reopening costs, funding will also be needed to continue remote learning into the foreseeable future, including for additional laptops and wi-fi hotspots. 2505

O (CNS) - On Monday the City Council will discuss and possibly approve spending .8 million so the San Diego Humane Society can take over the city's animal service needs in the upcoming fiscal year.   RELATED: Future of animal services in San Diego up in the airSan Diego County has provided animal services to the city since 1971, but the Board of Supervisors notified the city in May that it will explore outsourcing county Department of Animal Services duties in the fiscal year that begins July 1. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - San Diego County public health officials have reported 283 new COVID-19 cases and no new deaths, raising the region's total number of cases to 26,984, with the death toll remaining at 533.The county reported 7,505 diagnostic tests Saturday, 4% of which returned positive. The 14-day rolling average of positive tests is 5.6%. The target set by California is less than 8%. The seven-day daily average of tests is 9,201. Of the total positive cases, 2,391 -- or 8.9% -- required hospitalization and 614 -- or 2.3% -- were admitted to an intensive care unit.Three new community setting outbreaks were reported Saturday in a restaurant/bar, food processing facility and business. In the past seven days, 11 community outbreaks were confirmed. The number of community outbreaks is above the trigger of seven or more in seven days. A community setting outbreak is defined as three or more COVID-19 cases in a setting and in people of different households. The next pandemic briefing from health officials will be Monday.Cal State San Marcos sent an advisory to students and staff Thursday notifying them that two employees who were working on campus have tested positive for COVID-19."One individual was last on campus on July 16 and the other individual on July 17," the advisory said. "Both are in self-isolation following public health protocols, as are people with whom they have had close personal contact."As a result of numbers that continue to rise, Supervisor Greg Cox announced Wednesday that San Diego County was starting a Safe Reopening Compliance Team that will provide assistance to businesses and residents not in compliance with public health orders. The team's exact powers were not clear."This is a carrot approach, not a stick," Cox said. "But we still have the stick and other tools to ensure compliance."Supervisor Nathan Fletcher said the team would enable the county to step up enforcement on "egregious violations" -- but the details on that enforcement were also unclear. Officials were reaching out to the various cities and communities in the county to collaborate on solutions."This is out of an effort to keep our businesses open, not to close them," Fletcher said. 2214
