SAN DIEGO (KGTV)- Across San Diego County, most law enforcement agencies have been focusing on education rather than enforcement regarding violations of the county’s public health order.The goal is to get people to comply voluntarily.“What we’re trying to do here is educate the public so that ultimately we can save lives,” said San Diego Sheriff, Bill Gore.In the City of Coronado, police have been offering people free facial coverings.“To approach folks in an enforcement posture, I’m not sure we’re going to get the type of compliance we need,” said Coronado Police Chief Chuck Kaye. “When we see folks that are not using face coverings we say ‘hey can we offer you a face covering?’”This Fourth of July weekend is expected to be busy, especially at local beaches.California Gov. Gavin Newsom ordered all parking lots of state beaches in Southern California and the Bay Area to be closed for the weekend.The City of Oceanside has also decided to close off its beach parking lots.So far, no community COVID-19 outbreaks have been linked to outdoor settings.“I spoke to a number of the coastal mayors and said ‘are you confident you can enforce the physical distancing at your beaches?’” said county’s supervisor, Nathan Fletcher. “They said they can so we have to trust them that they can do that as we move forward into the weekend,” said San Diego County supervisor Nathan Fletcher.“We have our normal patrols in our coastal towns that we police for,” said Gore. “We’re not planning to add enforcement details to be specifically walking on the beaches to look at who’s wearing a mask, who’s socially distanced or not.”Gore said he expects beachgoers to comply with social distancing and facial covering rules when required.Under the latest public health order, restaurants must close to the public from 10 PM TO 5 AM.Bars, wineries, and breweries that don’t serve food must completely close down. Wineries that operate outside are an exception and may stay open.“State regulatory teams will be in different regions, we’ll be working with that team here which part of it is Alcohol Beverage Control and our county regulatory agency,” said Gore. “So, we can do enforcement if we don’t get that voluntary compliance that we’re seeking,” said Gore.The San Diego Police Department said it's anticipating crowds this weekend and will have extra officers patroling the beaches and bays to keep people safe. If officers witness violations of the public health order, they will educate people to seek compliance. 2517

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — With schools temporarily closed because of the coronavirus, a Carlsbad librarian is providing the comfort of a library to students one driveway at a time.Calavera Hills Elementary librarian Lindsay Rudy started drive-by storytimes Wednesday, but has already found her schedule filing up with requests."I'm definitely surprised," Rudy said. "It makes my heart so happy."RELATED: San Diego County libraries go digital to fight spread of coronavirusRudy said the service started after she contacted a family and asked if they would be interested in storytime. Soon, others also signaled their interest."It brought me back to feeling like I was right there with them at the school," Rudy said. Rudy says the interactions also help spark conversations around life, especially at a time when kids are dealing with a lot of emotions."It really just made me happy we were able to continue that connection," Rudy said. SAN DIEGO (KGTV)-- A San Diego mother says working from home during the coronavirus pandemic cost her her job. She claims she was fired because her kids were making noises in the background of her teleconference calls."We're letting you go," Drisana Rios said. That was what her Human Resources representative told her in a call earlier this month. She said she thought the call was supposed to help resolve her workplace problems. Instead, by the end of the call, she says she was fired.Rios says it all began in mid-March when her bosses at an out-of-state insurance firm told her to work from home and telecommute via conference calls. This was in response to the state's COVID-19 lockdown orders.Rios says all parents working from home received an email from the company's regional boss that read, "thank you for the incredible effort you are putting forth through these difficult times." She says it also said that they would avoid layoffs during the pandemic.Like many parents, Rios was unable to find childcare for her four-year-old daughter and one-year-old son. Despite juggling parenting and working from home, Rios claims she was able to complete all her tasks. She adds that her clients never complained about her kids being in the background of her conference calls. The only complaints, she says, came from her male, direct superior."I said, 'Do you want me to lock my kids in the room? My one-year-old in the room? Do you want me to do that?' And… he responded and said, 'Figure it out.'" Rios said.She says she tried to arrange calls to be during her children's afternoon naptimes but claims her boss continued to ignore and demean her."He would purposely overlap schedules," Rios said.Rios then reached out to her HR department and asked how she should deal with the harassment she says she was experiencing-- a move she says that backfired a week later."She was shamed for having children, so she first elevated it to Human Resources," Daphne Delvaux, Sr. trial attorney at Gruenberg Law, said. "Human Resources took the side of the abusive manager, and terminated her for complaining."Rios has since filed a lawsuit against both her direct boss and the company for Gender discrimination, Retaliation, Gender harassment, Failure to prevent gender discrimination, Negligent supervision, Intentional infliction of emotional distress, and Wrongful termination in violation of public policy.In her complaint, Rios claims her HR representative told her that the company was "...experiencing a reduced revenue due to COVID-19 and they were laying [the] plaintiff off as a result of the pandemic." But Rios believes this was retaliation."The fact that they tried to cover it up because I went to HR, it's obvious what they did," Rios said.ABC 10News reached out to the company headquarters for comment on this lawsuit. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Two hundred elementary students are now the proud owners of new bikes, thanks to inmates at the Donovan Correctional Facility.For the fourth year, the Salvation Army Ray & Joan Kroc Center teamed up with the correctional facility to make the event happen. The inmates raised over ,000 to pay for the bikes and accessories, with some donating money they earn working. “Certain decisions got me where I am, but better decisions that I made since then put me exactly where I am, in the fire department and on my way out the door,” said prison inmate, Andrew Breckenridge.Breckenridge was one of two inmates invited to attend that actual event at the Kroc Center. He’s being released from prison in 10 days. “It feels great, I mean I can’t describe the feeling, seeing the smiles on these kids faces,” said Breckenridge.Children who received bikes were chosen based on merit and good behavior at school. 933
