I get to do a follow-up to one of my favorite stories! Six years ago I told you how a teen some thought would never walk or graduate surprised his entire class at commencement. Now he is beating the odds again! Story at 6. 238

Here's some good news for drivers in the United States: Gasoline could fall below a gallon for many Americans later this year.Retail gas prices have been falling steadily for several weeks now. The national average currently stands at .72 a gallon for regular gas, according to AAA, down 17 cents from the 2019 high in early May and down 7 cents in just the past week.Wholesale prices are falling even faster, suggesting that prices at the pump should continue to fall."Pretty much every portion of the country should see drops between now and the end of next week," said Tom Kloza, head of energy analysis for the Oil Price Information Service. Most of the decline is because of falling oil prices, in part thanks to booming US oil production. That has made up for cuts in production by OPEC nations designed to support prices. Oil prices have also fallen in part because of weaker-than-expected demand for gasoline in international markets, particularly China, where slowing economic activity has cut into auto sales.Gasoline prices have fallen fastest in parts of the country where gas was the norm at the end of last month. In California, which still has the highest average price at .86 a gallon, prices have fallen by 23 cents. And wholesale prices in the West are falling even faster than elsewhere in the country as refineries there that had been shut come back online."[Gas prices] should continue to fall as we move through the summer," said Kloza. "There's a high probability we'll be paying less than .50 in the next few months."The national average price will probably decline even more — perhaps to .25 a gallon according to Kloza — later in the year. Once the summer driving season ends, demand for gas falls, pushing down prices. So does a switch away from the more expensive blend of gasoline required in the summer months to control smog.A national average of .25 a gallon would probably mean that nearly half the nation's gas stations will be selling regular gas for less than a gallon, Kloza said. 2047

HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY, Fla. — A grandmother in Hillsborough County, Florida, is facing several charges after she caused a crash that killed her 10-month-old granddaughter, according to Florida Highway Patrol. According to an accident report, Helen Mention, 50, was drunk when she crashed into a guardrail on Friday, Oct. 25 at 9 a.m. Her blood alcohol level was .225, FHP says. That's nearly three times the legal limit of 0.08. Troopers say Mention was driving with 10-month-old Harlem Mention on her lap. She was turning from Mango Road onto westbound I-4 when she crashed into a guardrail. Harlem was taken to Tampa General with critical injuries. She died a few days later on Oct. 28, according to FHP. Mention was arrested Monday and charged with DUI manslaughter, aggravated manslaughter of a child, careless driving and a violation of Florida's child restraint law. 883

Families of victims are suing the Broward County school board, the sheriff's office and others for alleged negligence associated with the February 2018 shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, that killed 17 people.Parents of five students killed or injured in the shooting announced they were filing lawsuits Wednesday morning in Florida state court.Lisa Olson's son, William, was shot and survived the massacre but she said he has struggled since."To our family and to our son, this lawsuit will bring some accountability to the table," she said. The lawsuit she and her husband filed also names a school resource officer, a security monitor, the shooter, the Henderson Behavioral Health Clinic where the shooter was treated, and the state department of children and families. The lawsuit says the school board failed to take reasonable steps to provide proper security and says the sheriff's department "negligently implemented and executed its policies and procedures" by not going immediately into the building where the shooting has happening.More than a dozen other lawsuits on behalf of some survivors and victims' families will be filed by the end of the week, attorneys said at a news conference.A spokeswoman for the Broward County Sheriff's Office said, "We make it a practice not to comment on pending litigation."The school district said it "does not comment on potential, pending or ongoing litigation," according to Cathleen Brennan, a spokeswoman for Broward County schools. In December, a 1547

Former South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford will launch a longshot primary challenge for the 2020 Republican nomination, he announced Sunday, giving President Donald Trump another Republican challenger as he runs for reelection."I had planned to announce that back home this week. We had a hurricane come visit us on the coast of South Carolina so that sort of disrupted plans on that front," Sanford said in an interview on "Fox News Sunday." "But I am here to tell you now, that I am going to get in."When asked why he was running, he said because "I think we need to have a conversation on what it means to be a Republican," adding that he thinks the Republican Party has lost its way on "a couple different fronts."He becomes the third Republican to mount a primary challenge against the President. In April, former Massachusetts Gov. Bill Weld officially entered the race, and last month, former Illinois Rep. Joe Walsh announced his candidacy. Trump's campaign had a one-word response to Sanford's announcement: "irrelevant," campaign spokesman Tim Murtaugh said.Sanford, discussing what was then a potential candidacy, told CNN's Brianna Keilar in July there has been "no discussion of debt, deficit and government spending in Washington these days," and that those issues would be a focal point of his campaign were he to run. However, although Sanford has been a frequent critic of Trump, he has said he would back the President instead of a Democrat.Faces long oddsSanford, who has been privately considering whether to run since leaving office in January, faces long odds in his bid against Trump, whose approval rating among Republicans has consistently been around 90%. His decision to challenge Trump comes after losing his primary race last year for South Carolina's 1st Congressional District where he failed to find support in the state's Republican Party as a vocal critic of the President. 1916
