SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The Gaslamp Quarter was a ghost town Friday afternoon, unheard of at this time of year, which normally holds Comic Con and Padres games.Due to the pandemic, Padres' Opening Day was pushed back four months to Friday night, but no fans were allowed in.The droves of visitors nonexistent, hitting nearby businesses and fans hard.RELATED: San Diego Padres begin unprecedented season at fan-less Petco Park"Our sales were just through the roof, I've never worked in a restaurant where we have 2,000 covers in one day. This year," Manager of Rockin Baja Lobster Manager David Bravo said with a shrug. "You can see the sidewalk, the Convention Center is closed, probably half the restaurants are open," he gestured to neighboring businesses with closed signs posted on their windows.Bravo said they're focused on keeping their doors open, "we need to look at are we paying the staff and are we making enough money to survive? JT climbed all the way to the nosebleeds where military members were sitting and handed the ball over.He chose the military member to honor their service. His grandfather served in the Navy for 10 years.He's kept the tradition alive each and every year since.Standing outside the Gaslamp Gate, JT said, "it definitely feels a little strange... not being able to go in the park just feels weird because I have to watch it at home."While JT will be at home, others are still out spreading acts of kindness."I've been walking up to tables asking how they're doing, and I've been thanking them for being in a good mood, and thanking for smiles, because I think if you spread the kindness maybe we can... make it all better," Bravo said.Everyone hoping for positive change soon. 2135
SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The future of Horton Plaza was teased in a new set of renderings released by the firm that purchased the aging mall.Stockdale Capital Partners purchased Horton Plaza in June 2018 with the aim of revitalizing the center into a mixed-use high-tech office and retail space. Wednesday, the firm gave a glimpse at The Campus at Horton, showing a completely transformed Nordstrom building from a concrete facade into a glass-covered office space. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The mayor of Temecula has announced his resignation after facing raging criticism over an email stating he didn't “believe there’s ever been a good person of color killed by a police officer." James "Stew" Stewart's comments went viral June 2 and drew a firestorm of calls for his resignation and threats of protests. Stewart made the racist remark in a reply to a constituent "concerned about our police officers and their sensitivity training.""As you know the City of Temecula does not have its own Police Department," Stewart said in his email. "We contract with Riverside County Sheriff's Department.""And I don't believe there's ever been a good person of color killed by a police officer," said Stewart.Stewart posted a copy of the email on his own Facebook page explaining that he is dyslexic and uses voice text, and that he published the note without proofreading what was recorded."I may not be the best writer and I sometimes misspeak, but I am not racist. I deeply regret this mistake and I own it, entirely. I am truly sorry," Stewart said in his resignation letter posted on Facebook late Thursday night.Stewart's comments brought tension to the small tourist destination city during a time in which the nation is seeing daily demonstrations and protests against police killings and racism. A Change.Org petition has started circulating demanding that city officials acknowledge that "systemic racism and police brutality exist in Temecula and the need for reform and consequence."Temecula, a city of about 115,000 residents in Riverside County, is located about 85 miles north of San Diego. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Sunday, San Diego County health officials reported 568 new coronavirus cases and three new community outbreaks, including one at a preschool.The county's new cases were out of 8,943 reported tests, a 6% positive rate, and brought the region's total to 23,682 cases.The three new community outbreaks were reported in a restaurant/bar, in a manufacturing facility, and in a preschool, the county said. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The downtown building at 101 Ash Street has been sitting vacant for most of the last four years and as it continues to sit empty, taxpayers are footing the ,000 per day bill.City Council leaders voted 5-4 — with Council members Vivian Moreno, Monica Montgomery, Barbara Bry, and Georgette Gómezto voting in opposition — to request monthly updates on the building's status and costs for several options presented by Mayor Kevin Faulconer's office.The mayor's options included putting millions of dollars more into the building for the needed repairs, buying out the lease, pursue a new landlord, trying to renegotiate its lease, or walking away entirely, the last of which could risk litigation and credit damage.The coronavirus pandemic has cleared out office buildings across downtown San Diego. But emptiness is business as usual for the old Sempra building at 101 Ash.In 2016, the city approved a lease-to-own agreement for the building, valued at million. The idea was to move upwards of 1,100 city employees into the facility.But officials quickly discovered a series of problems requiring major renovations to the site's 19 floors.In December 2019, the city finally began moving workers into the building, only to vacate them a month later when the county found traces of asbestos.So how did the city get into this mess? A new investigation shows it really never did its homework for such a big purchase from the start.The law firm Hugo Parker found that, "at no time, however, did the city formally inspect 101 Ash before closing escrow."In January, councilmember Barbara Bry showed ABC 10News a document that the city accepted the property as is."That is stupid to do when you are doing a long-term lease purchase on a building that was built in the 1960s," Bry said.An additional new report from Kitchell says the building needs 5 million of repairs, which is well more than what the city paid for it. 1947
