While many Americans do it, taking a selfie with a completed ballot is considered a crime in many states.For much of American history, ballots were intended to be secret. But as social media usage has exploded, more and more Americans are taking pictures with their ballots, and or at polling places. Most of these photos are harmless, but that doesn’t mean they’re fully legal in some states.In response, seveal states have changed their laws regarding ballot selfies.According to the National Conference of State Legislatures, California, Colorado, Hawaii, Nebraska, Oklahoma, Oregon and Utah have made changes to their laws in the last five years which allow some form of ballot selfies.Other states, however, have tried to curtail ballot selfies. For instance, Alabama passed a law last year that prohibits taking a photograph of a ballot, or otherwise revealing the contents of a completed ballot.Another state, New Hampshire, attempted to pass a law to restrict ballot selfies.However, a federal appeals court ruled 3-0 that the state had not shown that it was using the least restrictive means to achieve a compelling state interest of prohibiting voting fraud. According to the ruling, New Hampshire Secretary of State William Gardner was unable to show examples of how ballot photography led to voting fraud."The restriction affects voters who are engaged in core political speech, an area highly protected by the First Amendment," the ruling states. "There is an increased use of social media and ballot selfies in particular in service of political speech by voters. A ban on ballot selfies would suppress a large swath of political speech."Indiana also had a law passed in 2015 that would have made ballot selfies a felony struck down by a federal judge.In Colorado, the state made it legal in 2017 to take ballot pictures.Nationally, laws vary from state to state. While some states may permit photography of a completed mail-in ballot, the state might prohibit photography at a voting site.CNN has compiled a state-by-state list of what is permitted and not permitted in each state. 2104

While thousands gathered in Bridgestone Arena in Nashville, Grammy Award winner, Sturgill Simpson played his own street-side concert.Simpson won a Grammy for Best Country Album earlier this year, but has never been nominated for a CMA Award. He's made jabs at the Country Music Association in the past.He played for a small crowd at the entrance of the arena and streamed it live to his Facebook page.Sturgill answered questions from viewers and played a few songs. WINTER HAVEN, Fla. — The Polk County Sheriff's Office is conducting a death investigation after an Uber driver shot and killed a man early Tuesday morning.During a news conference, Sheriff Grady Judd said that a bartender and patron at the Grove Lounge on US Hwy 27 in Dundee called for an Uber when they realized a young woman was in no condition to drive.As they waited for the Uber to arrive, the patron, Jessica, and her boyfriend, 34-year-old Jason Boek, were texting back and forth about him picking her up from the bar. When he refused, Jessica told him that she had found a ride and didn't need him to pick her up; in which he later replied after arguing with her:"I'm going to f***ing beat the f*** out of the Uber driver"Once the Uber driver, 38-year-old Robert Westlake, arrived at the bar Jessica put the intoxicated young woman in the car. Boek began following the Hyundai Elantra .thinking Jessica was inside.As the two continued on Dundee Road, Boek approached Westlake's Hyundai from behind and then abruptly passed and pulled in front of it.After jumping out of his F-250 pickup truck and approaching Westlake he yelled:"You know I have a pistol? Want me to shoot you?"Westlake, who is a concealed weapon permit holder and just finished police academy, reached into the pocket of the driver door, retrieved a handgun and shot Boek once in the chest. With Congress unable to agree on another stimulus package, the CARES Act may have been the only chance for many to get an economic impact payment or stimulus check. However, millions of people still haven’t received that check.The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) estimates roughly 9 million people are still owed at least ,200. The Center for Taxpayer Rights estimates another 2 to 3 million people are entitled to and have been fighting to get the 0 for each of their eligible dependents.“There is a whole combination of factors for why people have not received their checks,” said Nina Olsen, the Executive Director for The Center of Taxpayer Rights.One reason some have not gotten their checks is because they did not file a 2018 or 2019 tax return, and they have not gone to the IRS’s “Non-Filer Portal,” which is located on the home page of the IRS’s website.So now, after 5 months, the IRS is sending letters to 9 million people in that category. The IRS has been able to identify who still qualifies for a check, but hasn’t received it, by sorting through its records and checking W-2 forms and 1099s.Those forms also have the non-filer’s address information, and that is the address the IRS is using for the new letters. The letters will inform these non-filers they are still eligible to get a stimulus check under the CARES Act and the steps they need to take to get that money. The steps are simple, either go to the IRS’s website and fill out the non-filer form or file a tax return.“It is also really important that people realize that if they use the non-filer portal they won’t be able to claim the earned income credit and many of these people may be eligible for the earned income credit,” said Olsen. “Those people need to file a regular return rather than use the non-filer portal and I don’t think the IRS has done a really good job of telling people that.”The earned income tax credit (EITC), typically earned by those who have dependent children, can be worth up to ,000. If you fill out the non-filer form in the IRS’s portal but later learn you qualified for additional money from the EITC, you could potentially lose the money from EITC.Outside of the 9 million non-filers getting a letter from the IRS, the 2 to 3 million people still eligible for 0 per dependent are getting a second chance at more CARES Act stimulus money.“Social Security Retirees and disabled people, it gave them less than 48 hours to go online if they had children. That meant they could get an additional 0 and enter that on the non-filer portal. Well a lot of these folks don’t have online access,” said Olsen. "It actually took a lawsuit that is still in the process of being settled for the IRS to reopen the portal.”Those still eligible to claim dependents have until the end of September to claim them through the IRS’s non-filer portal. Frederica Wilson, adding that he stands by his comments.President Donald Trump and the Florida Democratic congresswoman publicly fought over each of their accounts of the conversation the President had with the widow of a slain soldier.
