SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A staff member at West Hills High School has tested positive for COVID-19, according to Grossmont Union High School District.The families of 23 students in classes affected by the positive test have been notified and will not participate in in-person classes for 14 days, according to GUHSD PIO Catherine Martin.Those students will continue their instruction virtually during that time, Martin added. All other West Hills students will continue their in-person or distance learning classes as scheduled.In a letter to parents, West Hills High principal Robin Ballarin said after reviewing the positive test with public health officials, there is no need to close the school for in-person learning."We have cleaned and disinfected, as appropriate, and our campus has been deemed safe for occupancy. We understand that this information is concerning. Staff members and students who may have come into close contact with the individual will be directly contacted by San Diego County Public Health with further instructions. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A woman was hospitalized Sunday afternoon after authorities say she was bitten by a rattlesnake near the Torrey Pines Gliderport.According to the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department, the 33-year-old was hiking nearby trails when she was bitten.The woman was airlifted to a nearby hospital for treatment. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — An apparent SDG&E scam reported by a North County couple turned out to be an actual warning to evacuate, just not for them.The power company is calling a recent interaction with a Poway family a "misunderstanding," after the family believed they had been scammed by someone posing as the company.The Chavez family told 10News this week they received a phone call from someone saying they worked for SDG&E, telling them they needed to evacuate their home while work was being using a helicopter.The message said, “it requires a helicopter. The helicopter is required from the FAA to have certain properties, like yourself, evacuate the home.”ORIGINAL STORY: Family urging San Diegans to be aware of a possible new SDG&E scamAfter calling SDG&E to confirm, they were told there was no work going on in their area. The family believed they had been scammed. But it turns out, the phone call was true — for a different neighborhood.According to SDG&E, FAA does require residents to leave their homes when work is being done in their area requiring a helicopter and special construction.However, when the Chavez family called SDG&E, they didn't use the number the original caller provided. Brenda Kaesler says she first learned about Wreaths Across America (WAA) when she laid her son Jeffrey to rest. "He had the best smile of anyone I've ever seen. He just lit up the room. And of course that's a mother talking, but other people have said the same thing!" said Brenda. Brenda says Jeffrey suffered a traumatic brain injury in Iraq, which lead to a brain aneurysm and his death several years later. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - An inmate at R.J. Donovan State Prison has filed a lawsuit against the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation.Anand Jon Alexander filed the complaint on Monday, alleging prison officials failed to keep him safe and to provide adequate medical care after he was assaulted behind bars.In the complaint, Alexander claims he was attacked by another inmate while waiting to make a phone call on May 18, 2019. He was allegedly stabbed multiple times in the face and kicked on the ground.After the attack he sustained “five facial fractures, a lower orbital floor blowout, sinus and nasal fractures, a deviated septum, a 50% abrasion to the right cornea, long term impairment of his vision and respiration, serious nerve damage, PTSD” according to the complaint.Alexander is 12 years in to a 59 year sentence after he was convicted of rape in 2008.An up and coming fashion designer, Alexander had been featured on “America’s Next Top Model” and was listed in Newsweek’s “Who’s Next in 2007.”But his career was put on hold after being accused by multiple women of sexual assault.Many of the charges were dropped, but he was convicted on one count of rape and 15 other counts following a trial in Los Angeles. The jury found him not guilty or were hung on several other counts.Alexander has maintained his innocence. In the complaint, his lawyer writes he “has acknowledged the existence of blurred lines between his personal and professional relationships…Nevertheless, he holds steadfast to his innocence.”The American Justice Alliance, a group which seeks to free prisoners who have been wrongfully convicted, submitted an amicus brief to the Federal Central District Court.In it, they wrote Alexander “was targeted by a collusion of disgruntled business associates and some former girlfriends, who have admitted they were out to “bring him down,” and “get revenge,” seeking notoriety and monetary benefits. He was then subject to a prosecution and trial riddled with extraordinary police misconduct.”The lawsuit names CDCR as well as Marcus Pollard, the Warden of R.J. Donovan Correctional Facility and Daniel Paramo, the former Warden.It alleges prison officials failed to protect Alexander from harm and after he was injured gave “deliberate indifference to Mr. Alexander’s medical condition.”They are seeking unspecified monetary damages and a jury trial.So far, no criminal charges have been filed against the assailant. 10News reached out to CDCR for comment but had not heard back before the story was published. 2557
