SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Some low-level, non-violent inmates facing trials and being held in San Diego County jails are being considered for release in the wake of the coronavirus outbreak, the county's district attorney and sheriff announced Saturday."In the wake of an unprecedented Superior Court closure, the San Diego County District Attorney's Office and San Diego County Sheriff's Department took several proactive steps this week to address the threat of the coronavirus to individuals arrested for low-level, non-violent crimes who normally would have been released if the court was open or can't afford to post jail," the DA and sheriff said in a joint statement.The DA's office did not say how many inmates have already been released under the new policies nor how many are expected to be released.District Attorney Summer Stephan said she and the sheriff were concerned about defendants who are not an imminent threat to pubic safety, who are unable to post bail and would be forced to wait weeks or potentially months for their first court appearance because of the court being shut down.Cases involving people in custody are being reviewed and if no charges are going to be filed, the jail will be notified by the district attorney so the person can be released, the statement said."If charges are going to be filed, the district attorney is working with the sheriff and the court on an electronic pre-arraignment review to identify individuals whose charges are eligible for immediate release or bail reduction," a news advisory said."We're taking these steps because it's the right thing to do in the face of extreme circumstances that pose a serious health risk to inmates and everyone who has contact with inmates..." SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Police sought the public's help Tuesday to find a Navy SEAL veteran last seen more than two weeks ago at his residence in the Chollas Lake Park area.Johnathan Steven Surmont, 45, was last seen Aug. 27 and was last heard from when he contacted his ex-wife Aug. 31 to tell her he was in a "rough place" in Los Angeles, according to a missing person bulletin from the San Diego Police Department. His vehicle was found four days later, on Sept. 3, in La Jolla.In a video posted to Vimeo dated three years ago, Surmont described himself as a disabled veteran who spent 15 years as a Navy SEAL."I was a SEAL sniper, communicator and unmanned systems expert," he said in a testimonial for the Red Circle Foundation, an organization that describes itself as supporting the families of fallen and wounded U.S. Special Operations forces."I'm a single father and a small business owner," Surmont said before describing a long list of injuries, which he said included "a traumatic brain injury" and "about 17 different areas that I'm experiencing chronic pain on a daily basis." SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Pac-Man is the newest inductee into the Comic-Con Museum's Character Hall of Fame, the San Diego-based museum announced Thursday.Pac-Man "is being honored as the original digital game mascot for his enduring impact he has had on the video game industry and the role of storytelling in games," according to the museum, which is scheduled to partially open in Balboa Park in mid-2021.The iconic, hungry yellow circle will be the second character in the museum's hall of fame. Batman was inducted in the hall of fame's inaugural year in 2019.This year marks the 40th anniversary of Pac-Man, which is the highest- grossing video game ever made, according to the museum. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - San Diego Superior Court officials warned the public Thursday about a scam targeting the Hispanic community in which a scammer reportedly threatens to arrest people unless they pay for items they never ordered.According to court officials, a woman recently showed up at court looking for a fictional courtroom number. She had been told there would be a hearing on her refusal to pay for items the scammer said she purchased.The woman was told to either pay ,500 or be taken to court. When she came to the courthouse, the woman discovered there was no such case and the threat was a scam.When court staff dialed the phone number provided to the potential victim, the person who answered said she would only speak in Spanish.Superior Court officials are now warning vulnerable non-English speakers about the scam."It appears these scammers are targeting members of the community they believe won't go to authorities or show up at a courthouse," said Executive Officer Michael Roddy. "It appears they believe they can just take the money and no one will report them."These scams happen every year; sometimes they tell people there are charges for failing to show up for jury services or charges for clearing up arrest warrants; this time it's charges for not paying for ordered items," Roddy said. "Once again, we want the public to know the court or law enforcement will not call you with this type of issue and court will never, ever demand cash as the way to make charges go away."The public is told to simply hang up or contact law enforcement if the scammer gets aggressive. 1604

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The San Diego Downtown Rotary Breakfast Club will donate ,000 Wednesday to Honor Flight San Diego, an organization that flies World War II and Korean War veterans to Washington, D.C., to visit the memorials dedicated to the conflicts in which they fought.The donation will be used to cover air fare for the organization's next excursion, scheduled for May 2020. The cost for each veteran for the three- day trip is roughly ,500 and is covered through donations to Honor Flight as well as fundraising events like the rotary club's annual Golf for Heroes tournament.The San Diego Downtown Rotary Club raised the money at the most recent tournament through a silent auction.
