RICHMOND, Va. – Virginia Governor Ralph Northam and First Lady Pamela Northam have tested positive for COVID-19.On Wednesday they were notified that a member of the Governor’s official residence staff, who works closely within the couple’s living quarters had developed symptoms and had tested positive for COVID-19.The Governor and First Lady received PCR nasal swab tests Thursday afternoon and both tested positive for COVID-19, the governor’s office said. They added that Governor Northam is experiencing no symptoms and First Lady Pamela Northam is experiencing mild symptoms. The release said the Governor and First Lady will isolate for the next 10 days and evaluate their symptoms. The Governor will fulfill his duties from the Executive Mansion.“As I’ve been reminding Virginians throughout this crisis, COVID-19 is very real and very contagious,” said Governor Northam. “The safety and health of our staff and close contacts is of utmost importance to Pam and me, and we are working closely with the Department of Health to ensure that everyone is well taken care of. We are grateful for your thoughts and support, but the best thing you can do for us—and most importantly, for your fellow Virginians—is to take this seriously.”The Governor and First Lady are working closely with VDH and the Richmond Heath Department to trace their close contacts. This story originally reported on WTKR.com. 1408

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — The U.S. government says California must change how it issues identification cards that comply with stricter federal requirements. The so-called Real ID cards will be needed to board airplanes or enter federal buildings by October 2020 under security enhancements following 9/11. California already has issued 2.3 million cards.Department of Motor Vehicles spokesman Marty Greenstein said Friday that those IDs will remain valid and changes will apply going forward. The DMV had required one document proving residency and counted on delivery by the post office as secondary proof of someone's address.Emails show the Department of Homeland Security approved that process last year. But it told the DMV in November that was no longer acceptable and two documents proving residency are required. The change will be implemented next spring. 869

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (KGTV) -- Amid mounting frustration over wait times at the California DMV, the department has redesigned portions of its website to make access to services easier. The redesigned portions include the website’s homepage and real ID page.“We are constantly modernizing our website with the customer in mind,” DMV Director Jean Shiomoto said. The changes come on the heels of news that California lawmakers can avoid the long lines at the DMV by visiting a private office near the Capitol not open to the public.RELATED: Private DMV office provides services to California lawmakersThe Sacramento Bee reported that the special DMV office in the legislative office building provides services for current and retired lawmakers as well as their staff and some other state employees. The redesign also comes amid mounting frustrations over longer and longer lines at statewide DMV offices and increased fees for vehicle registration.RELATED: California lawmakers ask DMV officials about long lines 1034

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — The California Assembly has apologized for discriminating against Japanese Americans and helping the U.S. government send them to internment camps during World War II. The Assembly passed a resolution Thursday that also apologized for discrimination leading up to the war. It comes a day after California Gov. Gavin Newsom and the governors of Idaho and Arkansas declared Feb. 19 a Day of Remembrance. That's the day in 1942 when President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed an executive order leading to the imprisonments. California lawmakers gave somber statements and hugged and shook hands with people who were imprisoned in the camps and with their families. The Democratic assemblyman who introduced the resolution said the state would be apologizing for a time when "California led the racist anti-Japanese American movement.”The measure received bipartisan support, a rarity in the Legislature. 930

Russia has condemned US, UK and French strikes against targets in Syria over the alleged use of chemical weapons as the Western allies argued they were essential to deter the future use of illegal munitions. The overnight strikes hit three sites -- one in Damascus and two in Homs -- which US President Donald Trump said were "associated with the chemical weapon capabilities of Syrian dictator Bashar al-Assad."The action followed a week of threats of retaliation for a suspected chemical weapons attack on civilians in Douma, outside Damascus, where Syrian forces have long been battling rebels.Trump hailed the strike as "perfectly executed" in a tweet posted Saturday, adding "Mission Accomplished!"Russian President Vladimir Putin called the missile strikes an "act of aggression against a sovereign state" and said they were against the UN charter. Russia, a key ally of the Assad government, is calling for an immediate UN Security Council meeting, he said. 971
