LA MESA, Calif. (KGTV) -- Church-goers in La Mesa attended a service Sunday even as a truck that crashed into the building Wednesday remained wedged in the structure. The large tree-trimming truck crashed into the side of the San Diego Taiwanese Presbyterian Church Wednesday. According to a witness, the crew in charge of the truck was working on the 4400 block of Harbison Avenue around 1:30 p.m. when the vehicle began rolling down a hill. Fortunately, no one was inside the building at the time of the crash, though the church says several children and volunteers were close by at the time, calling it a miracle that no one was hit. "We all watched helplessly as there was nothing we could do," Rob Engquist, a witness, said. "Turns out they had gone out to reposition it, moved their wheel chalk out of the way, don't know if the parking break was set or what happened, but the truck was going down the road on its own."A witness also told 10News that the truck was originally headed for a home next to the church but hit a curb and careened toward the church instead. 1260
LA MESA, Calif. (KGTV) -- La Mesa, El Cajon, Poway, Santee and other local cities are among San Diego County cities to enforce a curfew Sunday night. A curfew will begin at 7 p.m. on May 31 and end at 7 a.m. on June 1 for the City of La Mesa. During that time, the city encouraged residents and visitors to shelter in place. The order was issued following a city council meeting at 9 a.m. Sunday. La Mesa's curfew will also be in effect from Monda at 7 p.m. to Tuesday at 5:30 a.m.National City has also imposed a curfew saying: "This curfew will be in effect starting today, May 31 from 8pm until tomorrow, June 1 at 5:30am. This means no one should be out in public on the streets in National City after 8pm. LAKESIDE, Calif. (KGTV) - A woman in Lakeside has set up a cabinet full of "Goodies to Share" for homeless people living near Cactus Park.Barbara DeYoung says she got the idea from the "Little Free Libraries" she sees in her neighbors' yards."You just go very freely and get something. It's just people sharing with you," she says. "It's a very nice feeling, and I thought for sure they would love that."She set up the cabinet near the San Vincente Creek that runs behind Cactus Park, an area where several homeless people have set up encampments."I felt these are wonderful human beings. But they have problems. They have situations they can't control," DeYoung explains. "But they can read a book in the evening. They can play games, whatever they need to do."Rather than filling the cabinet with food, DeYoung stocks it with comfort items like books, blankets, wipes, playing cards, and other things that aren't usually available to homeless people at shelters or service offices.DeYoung says it's about feeding their souls and showing them respect and love, rather than just handing them food.The cabinet has already become a hit. DeYoung had to restock it just a few days after she first set it up. And just a few minutes after she refilled the cabinet, our cameras caught a man coming up from the creek bed to grab some wipes out of it.He asked not to be identified but says it feels good to know that people care.Meanwhile, DeYoung doesn't believe it will attract more homeless people to the area, but it will make life more bearable for the ones already there."I don't think boxes of raisins are going to bring armies of people here," she says. Labor Day marks the unofficial end of summer throughout the U.S. — and the Denver area seemingly took that to heart by skipping straight to winter on Tuesday.Just after noon on Monday, Denver recorded temperatures of over 90 degrees. Less than 24 hours later, temperatures had plummeted to near freezing, and snow was falling in parts of the city.A powerful cold front was the culprit for the sharp change in temperatures. The system will bring winter weather to the Denver area through Wednesday evening.According to meteorologists with Scripps station KMGH in Denver, between 3 and 7 inches of snow is expected to fall in the Front Range corridor by early Wednesday.There are also freeze warnings in effect for the Colorado plains east of Denver, where temperatures are expected to dip below freezing by Wednesday morning.Officials fear the early freeze could damage crops, some of which are about to be harvested. Officials also fear that a deep freeze with full foliage could cause tree limbs to snap and cause power outages in the area.KMGH reports that Denver's earliest snow of the season came Sept. 3, 1961, when a Labor Day storm brought 4.2 inches to the city's airport and dumped nearly a foot in the western suburbs and foothills. On Sept. 8, 1962, Denver saw its earliest freeze of the season when temperatures dipped to 31 degrees.Wednesday's snowfall was Denver's earliest in the last decade. The previous record for earlier snowfall in the last 10 years came Oct. 5, 2012. Last year's first snow came earlier than usual on Oct. 10 — still a full month earlier than Tuesday's snowfall.The enormous temperature swing between Monday and Tuesday could also turn out to be the largest swing on record. The previous record occurred on Jan. 25, 1872, when the temperature dropped 66 degrees, from 46 degrees to -20 degrees.Monday also marked Denver's 73rd day in 2020 with temperatures in the 90s, which ties an all-time record. LAS VEGAS — A Las Vegas leader wants the city's airport renamed amid a wave of racial unrest and calls for removing brands, tributes and other items with racially-charged origins.McCarran International Airport, located next to the heart of the Las Vegas Strip, is arguably one of the most prominent places in Southern Nevada.In 1948 it was named for Sen. Patrick McCarran, a powerhouse in both state and national politics.McCarran represented Nevada from 1933 until his death in 1954 in Washington, D.C.During his time in public office, he was considered one of the biggest supporters of aviation, which was still getting off the ground in the 1930s, and sponsored key legislation that helped shape the modern air travel industry.However, historians have pointed out that McCarran's legacy is marred by racism, xenophobia and antisemitism."Pat McCarran was an evil man," Clark County Commissioner Tick Segerblom said.Segerblom wants to scrub McCarran's name from the airport and introduced a bill in the Nevada Legislature in 2017 to do just that."To have the first thing when you come to Nevada (be) McCarran Airport — when you look at his history, that's just unacceptable," Segerblom said.Segerblom wanted to rename the airport for longtime Nevada Sen. Harry Reid (D), but the bill ultimately failed."First off, I want to get rid of the name, but secondly, I want to honor Sen. Reid, he is really the father of modern Nevada," Segerblom said.There was push back, and Segerblom says he believes opponents felt using Reid's name as a replacement was too politically partisan."Our kids grow up hearing about McCarran airport; they don't know what that its, but they don't realize we are honoring somebody who didn't believe I should even be a citizen or have the right to vote, that's wrong," Segerblom said.Critics who are opposed to renaming the airport say McCarran was a critical part of history, and attempting to scrub his name from Las Vegas will not change that. But Segerblom argues that continuing to honor McCarran is unacceptable."We are a multicultural, multi-ethnic city, and for our airport to be named after a racist anti-Semite and other things is just unacceptable," Segerblom said.A name change would require a majority four-person vote by the Clark County Commission.If the name changes in the near future, estimates put the cost around million to replace signs, logos, letterheads, graphics and other items associated with the airport.Segerblom says he would raise funds privately to make the change happen.This story was originally published by Joe Bartels on KTNV in Las Vegas. 2611
