A Southern Arizona school district is taking a creative approach to better sanitize the classroom daily.Santa Cruz Valley School District bought six Power Breezers that will disinfect a classroom in 20 minutes.Superintendent David Verdugo said the school district did this as a cost effective way to provide extra safety and security to students and staff.He said it will be used after school to clean empty classrooms, hallways and even school buses.Each unit costs about 4,500 dollars."This is an opportunity for them to look at a way to sanitize a room in a short period of time and utilize their staff but also be cost effective," Superintendent Verdugo said.He said the district is also requiring all students to wear masks, have their temperature checked, and social distance in and out of the classroom.Every classroom will only be at 50% capacity, meaning 15 desks per room, he said. In order to do this, the district came up with a hybrid approach to learning."There will be a group A and a group B," Superintendent Verdugo said. "The group A students will be on Monday. They will come to school, have their direct instruction and then they will be at home the next day. Then, group B will come to school, but they will still have some interaction that day with assignments and virtual opportunities."He said the district is planning on starting remote learning on August 3 and then the hybrid approach will being on August 31. Peak flu season is starting now, and doctors say to get ready for a potentially extended season. This year’s flu season has been rough, with the CDC reporting the flu is widespread in 24 states, with 19 states reporting high levels of flu activity. That's more than double the activity of the previous week. A total of 13 children have died so far this flu season. Doctors say it could get worse. “Flu activity has taken off our projection is that it's going to continue to increase, probably for the next few months,” says Dr. Andrew Walshak with Presbyterian/ St. Luke’s Medical Center. Dr. Walshak says he expects to see more flu cases around the country. “The graph of flu activity in our hospital is just increasing,” he explains. “It's just a slow upward, so we're only at the beginning of flu season right now.” Everyone is at risk: your family, friends, neighbors and co-workers. “It can really affect the lungs and affect our ability to get oxygen in our bodies, and that's what primarily the fatalities have been caused by his severe breathing problems,” he says. Ron Johnson (R-WI) has tested positive for COVID-19, his communications director said Saturday morning.“Senator Johnson was exposed to someone who tested positive for COVID-19 on Sept. 13. He stayed in quarantine for 14 days without developing symptoms and tested negative twice during that time," Johnson's Communications Director Ben Voelkel said in a statement."He returned to Washington on Sept. 29 and shortly after was exposed to an individual who has since tested positive.
