(AP) — A man charged with killing a rookie California police officer made his first brief court appearance Monday wearing a four-inch gauze pad covering what officials said was a self-inflicted injury.Adel Sambrano Ramos was appointed a public defender during a five-minute court hearing, and spoke only to acknowledge his name.Ramos, 45, faces a murder charge that could bring him the death penalty in Wednesday's slaying of 26-year-old Sacramento Officer Tara O'Sullivan. He's also charged with attempting to murder her training officer and with possessing two illegal assault-style rifles.He did not enter a plea.Assistant Chief Deputy District Attorney Rod Norgaard defended police from criticism that they took 45 minutes to rescue O'Sullivan with an armored vehicle because they were pinned down by rifle fire that could penetrate standard bulletproof vests."There was nothing that could have been done to save her life," he said after the hearing. "The nature of that injury is such that it could happen in an emergency room and she would not be save-able. So I find it very disheartening that people are criticizing the police response time to evacuate her. That has no merit whatsoever."He also took exception to questions of whether O'Sullivan was properly trained."Nothing in the training or lack thereof is the cause of this," he said. "There is an individual responsible for this, not law enforcement."Assistant Public Defender Diane Howard declined comment, as did Police Chief Daniel Hahn, who sat quietly in the back of the courtroom. RIPON, Wisconsin — An assistant professor at a Wisconsin college is getting national attention for the research she just published about a dog's empathy for its owner.The idea came to Ripon College's Julia Meyers-Manor when her collie tried to save her mom from a pile of pillows when she was just playing with her children.In her study, Meyers-Manor observed whether dogs would open a door if their "trapped" owner was on the other side crying or humming, and if so, how much of an effort they would make to "rescue" the person. She also recorded the dogs' heart rate variability.Meyers-Manor said dogs can "feel" your emotions. One dog named Molly rammed through the door and leaped into her owner's arms."If we're distressed they become distressed," Meyers-Manor said.The animals, however, had a hard time deciphering whether the human was being truthful."In the crying condition the dogs basically ran in, and if they did, they did it within 20 seconds," said the assistant professor.About 50 percent of the dogs rammed through the door. RTW Retailwinds, the parent company of retail chain New York & Co., announced Monday that is filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy — the latest blow to an industry whose struggles were taken to new heights by the coronavirus pandemic.The company said in a press release Monday that filed for bankruptcy relief in New Jersey. In the statement, the company hinted that all of its more than 400 brick-and-mortar stores could close for good.In recent months, sales have fallen at New York & Co. as the pandemic forced shutdowns at non-essential retail stores across the country. In addition, massive layoffs and a large increase in employees working from home shrunk demand for professional attire. Other purveyors of businesswear have also fallen on hard times — Brooks Brothers filed for bankruptcy last week.CNN reports that New York & Co. furloughed a "significant portion" of store employees in March and that last week, the company was delisted from the New York Stock Exchange.New York and Co. joins an exponentially growing list of retailers who have filed for bankruptcy in recent weeks, including Sur La Table, JC Penney, Pier 1 Imports J.
