SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Just a few weeks ago, coronavirus testing was hard to come by. But now, many San Diegans are finding it easier to get tested. Some are purchasing at-home test kits online, at no up-front cost.Raechel Kadoya is not a clinician, nor is she at a doctor's office. She is the co-owner of Soichi Sushi, giving herself a COVID-19 test."I want to take advantage of being proactive," Kadoya said as she swabbed her nose.Since the modified re-opening of her restaurant in University Heights, she and her staff have been cautious about coronavirus exposure. That is why she ordered the Pixel by Labcorp at-home COVID-19 test kit for her entire staff."I think that it is my responsibility as a business owner, not only to my staff but to my customers and my family, to make sure that everybody is doing business here safely," Kadoya said.This is the staff's second round of testing. Kadoya said the first one required multiple doctors referrals just to get a drive-through appointment an hour away."We were able to find a place in Lake Elsinore, so we all had to drive up there," Kadoya said.Dr. Abi Olulade, a family medicine physician at Sharp Rees-Stealy Medical Group, said the accessibility of these at-home tests is a big draw."It definitely is something that is very convenient for consumers," Dr. Olulade said.But she suggested customers do their homework before they order."They should be looking at whether or not the tests that they are using have been FDA authorized, and it's not just some random test that they found on the internet," Dr. Olulade said.As of June 12, 2020, seven at-home COVID-19 test kits have the FDA's emergency use authorization. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — It has been over six months since a water main break spilled thousands of gallons of water into North Park streets, but some homeowners are still dealing with the aftermath.Jonathan Head has owned a triplex on Idaho street for almost twenty years."There's two buildings," Head said. "It was built in [the] 1940s."Back in October, a water main broke near his property. His tenants started to text him early that morning on October 4th. "It made my heart drop... it was like a river," Head said. While the water did not enter the living space, Head said it went into the vents flooding the crawl space beneath. "The wiring, the plumbing [was] completely saturated," Head said. He said city workers tried to fix the problem, but it was too late."By the time they got the equipment in, most of the water had penetrated the soil," Head said. He believes that made it difficult to dry out the property, which is why they are seeing problems with the foundation. Head said cracks below and inside the home developed. He filed a claim with the City of San Diego, but said he got no response."The city still has not compensated the clients entirely for the full scope of the damage," said Head's attorney, Evan Walker. There is now a lawsuit claiming roughly 5,000 worth of damage. "I think the city has known for some time about the precarious condition of its pipes and that it has done nothing," Walker added. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - In an effort to accelerate hiring and training of more border officer, National Guard members were deployed Tuesday to ports of entry along San Diego County's border with Mexico.In total, 24 National Guard troops joined Customs and Border Protection personnel at Port of San Diego, and ports of entry in San Ysidro, Otay Mesa, Tecate, and Calexico.They will not be taking part in any enforcement activities, according to CBP, instead, helping in surveillance support and operations. The deployed troops will not be armed.RELATED: Border Patrol officials discuss National Guard deployment to US-Mexico borderUp to 106 additional National Guard troops may be sent to the ports of entry in the coming weeks, CBP added."The contribution of the National Guard will undoubtedly improve our effectiveness at the ports of entry by enabling those officers to focus on enforcement activities," Pete Flores, CBP Director of field operations for San Diego, said.
