Many Starbucks locations will close on Tuesday at 2:30 p.m. local time to allow for employees to participate in racial-bias education. All Starbucks company-owned retail stores and corporate offices will be closed in the afternoon of Tuesday, May 29. Many schools are taking a different approach in helping children in school improve behavior.Dee Marie is bringing yoga to classrooms. She says she saw a need to teach non-violent coping skills after Columbine, so she created the non-profit group Calming Kids.The group teamed up with researchers at Harvard University to study the effects.“We got up to 93 percent less hitting,” Marie says. “We got incredible increase up to 86 percent increase in focus. Focus on their classwork, focus on their homework.”The simple techniques of the yoga practice are transforming behavior, even the behavior of bullies.“Students were able to settle in themselves better and started to get some ah-ha moments,” Marie says. “And what was really interesting was that the bullies started to recognize that they were bullies.”Marie’s program is global, reaching several states, Mexico and Puerto Rico.She's going back to the West Bank to teach for a second time next year.Similar programs are offered to help children.Jim and Lyneea Gillen started Yoga Calm when they saw students with learning disabilities or impacted by trauma having a tough time.“Initially I tried to get kids into counseling, but there weren't many services in a small town, and when there were, they weren't affordable for families,” explains Lyneea Gillen.The couple got their business accredited and began tracking results.“72 percent of the kids reported using the techniques at home unsolicited in a response to stress,” Jim Gillen says.Both programs now offer online courses.“It’s a solution to some of the problems we're seeing in schools right now,” Lyneea says. “I think we've met a need.”In Baltimore, some schools have even swapped detention for a meditation and mindfulness room and saw fewer children getting referred for discipline. 1812

Major League Baseball announced on Wednesday that it was elevating seven early 20th century all-Black baseball leagues — known collectively as the "Negro leagues" — to "Major League" status.The move recognizes the players in those leagues — who were prevented from playing for National or American League clubs because of racist "color barriers" — as Major League players and formalizes any surviving records or statistics from those leagues.Between the late 19th century through 1947, owners of National and American League clubs mutually agreed not to hire any Black ballplayers. As a result, Black people started their own baseball leagues, filled with teams and players across the country.Jackie Robinson finally broke the MLB's color barrier in 1947, when he began playing with the Brooklyn Dodgers. Over the next 12 years, MLB teams gradually began integrating their teams with the top Black players, eventually signaling the end of the Negro leagues.The MLB had previously inducted 35 players into the Baseball Hall of Fame. But with Wednesday's decision, MLB officially declared that the level of play in many of the Negro leagues was comparable to its own and bestowed the title of "Major Leaguer" to thousands of Black ballplayers who were not offered the opportunity to play with white players.According to MLB.com, the MLB has granted "Major League" status to the following all-Black leagues: Negro National League (I) (1920-31), the Eastern Colored League (1923-28), the American Negro League (1929), the East-West League (1932), the Negro Southern League (1932), the Negro National League (II) (1933-48) and the Negro American League (1937-48)."All of us who love baseball have long known that the Negro Leagues produced many of our game's best players, innovations and triumphs against a backdrop of injustice," MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred said in a statement. So now there's a protracted negotiation taking place -- and in an unusual move, Kelly's lawyer Bryan Freedman is talking about it publicly."Andy Lack needs to stop," Freedman said Tuesday, accusing the NBC News chair of leaking information about the negotiations.On Wednesday, Freedman upped the ante with another statement."Despite my efforts to handle this process confidentially, NBC News is allowing the media to run with completely false and irresponsible reports that disparage Megyn by erroneously claiming she has ever asked for more money than her contract requires," Freedman said. "If NBC News is not the source then they have a responsibility as a news division to correct these false claims.
