ENCINITAS, Calif. (KGTV) - A beloved custodian at an elementary school in Encinitas is recovering after a spider bite led to an amputation."He's happy. He's smiling. Thankful he's alive," said Megan Luce, PTA President at Park Dale Lane Elementary School.Guil Aguilar has been a custodian at the school for more than five years."His spirits are so high when I visited," said Luce.Luce says his ordeal began at work, just before Thanksgiving break. Aguilar says as he was moving trash cans near a dumpster, he saw spiders but didn't think anything of it. After he left the area, he felt a twinge in his foot. He went with family to visit relatives in Arizona during Thanksgiving and his bite began to swell. He was admitted into a hospital, then transferred to an Encinitas hospital, where doctors diagnosed him with a venomous spider bite. The type of spider is unknown. The treatment was not enough."There was an infection that they tried to clean out. The infection resulted in amputation of his foot and partial leg," said Luce.Luce says Aguilar handled the difficult news by focusing on the bright side."He was okay with it. He'd rather his foot be gone than his life," said Luce.As news of his ordeal spread, parents at the school rallied."I was heartbroken. He's such as an amazing, amazing person ... Always happy. He's always there to help. Goes over and beyond what he's supposed to do at the school," said Luce.The parents organized a meal train and a Gofundme campaign to help his family, including his five children, with expenses."He's not just a janitor. He's part of the community and part of the Park Dale Lane family," said Luce.The Encinitas Union School District issued the following statement: "The situation that you are inquiring about involves one of our employees and is currently under investigation by the District. Due to privacy rights and confidentiality laws, we are unable to provide an update on the employee ... In an abundance of caution, the District has taken the necessary precautions to ensure that all areas of campus have been inspected and are safe. ESCONDIDO, Calif. (KGTV) - The Old Palomar Hospital on the eastern edge of downtown Escondido could be redeveloped into hundreds of new homes and thousands of square feet of commercial, recreational and office space.In a letter to the city, developer Integral Communities says it wants to turn the site into a 450 homes, and 5,500 square feet of commercial spaces. The project could serve as a new gateway to downtown and add some much needed foot-traffic to Grand Avenue. Some businesses were closed Wednesday despite this being the midst of holiday shopping season. Beth Stevens, who owns the Vinklectic boutique on Grand Avenue, said she would welcome the project and the crowds it could bring. "I think new development is a good thing for everyone," Stevens said. Other business owners, however, said they are concerned about the project's increased traffic. But Rorie Johnston, who heads the Escondido Chamber of Commerce, said downtown needs to become more walkable. "The more you can slow people down, the more you can keep people in an area longer, the more possibility you have to engage with them," she said. Integral reached a deal with Palomar in February to buy the site for million. Palomar moved most of its services to its new hospital in west Escondido in 2012, making the older hospital available. It still offers cancer treatments, mental health services, and has office facilities at the downtown site. A hospital spokesman says it expects to stay in the downtown location through March 2020. (KGTV) - Three people are dead and two people were injured Friday when a bluff collapsed just north of Grandview Surf Beach in Encinitas, San Diego County Sheriff's deputies confirmed.The bluff fell about 3 p.m. near a lifeguard tower at the Grandview Beach staircase located in the 1700 block of Neptune Avenue, just below South Ponto State Beach.One person was flown to the hospital in critical condition. A second victim was transported to a nearby hospital with serious injuries. Both of those victims have succumbed to their injuries. (KGTV) -- Police in Escondido are joining law enforcement throughout the state in cracking down on distracted driving throughout April.Throughout the month, the city is deploying extra traffic officers thanks to grant-funded resources. Violators will be stopped and cited with fines set at 2 for first-time offenders.On April 5 and April 13, law enforcement officials all over the state are set to step up distracted driving enforcement.According to authorities, officers have issued hundreds of thousands of citations over the past three years to those texting or calling while driving.Recent legislation has even gone as far as to make it illegal to use a smartphone’s apps while driving."California’s distracted driving laws have been saving lives for a decade now,” said former State Senator Joe Simitian, who authored the state’s hands-free and no-texting laws. “Every day, somewhere in California, someone is sitting down to dinner with their family who wouldn't have made it through the day without these laws on the books.
