BOAO, Hainan, April 11 (Xinhua) -- Entrepreneurs and economists of the Chinese mainland and Taiwan have considered the expected signing of a cross-Strait economic pact as a top priority in further development of their trade relations.The long-awaited Economic Cooperation Framework Agreement (ECFA), aiming to normalize mainland-Taiwan economic ties and bring the two economies closer, is hoped to be signed by the end of June.Fredrick Chien, chief advisor of Taiwan's Cross-Straits Common Market Foundation, said here Sunday the ECFA will be an "extremely important" agreement to strengthen future development of cross-Strait relations."As long as we make this stride, the cross-Strait economic and trade exchanges will get much closer," Chien said at the Boao Forum for Asia annual conference which concluded Sunday in southern island province of Hainan.He jointly presided over a round-table meeting with Dai Xianglong, chairman of the mainland's National Council for Social Security Fund.

VIENNA, May 19 (Xinhua) -- Visiting Chinese Minister of Commerce Chen Deming stressed here on Wednesday that China will continue to stick to the policy of opening up and protecting the legitimate rights and interests of foreign-invested enterprises (FIEs) in the country.Speaking at a joint press conference with Reinhold Mittelehner, the Austrian economic affairs minister, and Christoph Leitl, president of the Austrian Chamber of Commerce, Chen said the Chinese government will step up intellectual property protection, and that all foreign investment enterprises in China will be treated equally.He called on Austria's small and mid-sized businesses to invest in China, especially in western China where "there are better chances."China and Austria should amend their agreements on investment protection for better results, Chen said.In addition to cooperation in traditional industries such as machinery, auto parts and transportation infrastructure, China and Austria can also cooperate in clean energy and environmental protection, Chen said.Chen was leading a trade mission to Austria. The two countries signed over a dozen cooperation agreements in trade and economy.

TOKYO, May 31 (Xinhua) -- Visiting Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao called on Japanese entrepreneurs Monday to make further contributions to the cooperation between the two countries.Addressing a welcome luncheon given in his honor by the Japanese Business Federation, the Chinese premier briefed the participants on what the Chinese government has achieved in tackling the global financial turmoil, as well as China's current economic situation and its major tasks.Wen said great progress has been made in bilateral economic and trade relations since the normalization of diplomatic ties between the two countries in 1972. YICHUAN, Henan, April 6 (Xinhua) -- The death toll after a central China mine blast last week has risen to 40，with 6 still missing, local authorities said on Tuesday.An official with the rescue headquarters confirmed Tuesday that 98 people were working underground in the Guomin coal mine in Yichuan county when the blast occurred at 7:20 p.m. on March 31. 57 were lifted to the ground unharmed, 35 were killed and six are still missing.The explosion also killed five and injured one on the ground, the official said.The illegal coal mine owned by village head Wang Guozheng was poorly managed and even does not have a payroll list. That's why the dead and missing could not be identified, the official said.Ten people allegedly accountable for the accident are under control by police, including mine owner Wang Guozheng, who was previously given a reprieved imprisonment sentence in 2009 for covering up a mine accident.Work safety authorities ordered the mine to suspend operations after a gas outburst on May 1, 2009. Production ever since has been illegal, said a statement from the Henan Provincial Administration of Work Safety.
