SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A suspect was behind bars Wednesday in connection with a mugging that left a 73-year-old disabled woman gravely injured last week on a downtown roadside near Cortez Hill.Stanley Harris Hinton, 31, was arrested Monday on suspicion of carrying out the robbery and assault in the Core-Columbia district of San Diego, according to police.The 6-foot-3-inch, 215-pound suspect allegedly attacked Nannette Altevers, who uses a walker, near the corner of B Street and Fourth Avenue shortly after 10 p.m. Friday.Patrol officers responding to a 911 call about the assault found the assailant gone and Altevers suffering from extensive upper body trauma, Lt. Matt Dobbs said. She remains hospitalized in critical condition.Due to the severity of the victim's injuries, homicide detectives have taken charge of the case, the lieutenant said.Hinton was booked into San Diego Central Jail on suspicion of attempted murder, assault, robbery and elder abuse. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Officers found a man fatally wounded inside a vehicle in the Bay Terraces community of San Diego, a police lieutenant said Saturday.Officers discovered the vehicle off the road with no other vehicles around and it did not appear to have been involved in a traffic crash, San Diego Police Lt. Paul Conley said.Officers dispatched to the location a little before midnight in the 7000 block of Paradise Valley Road walked up to the vehicle and discovered a man behind the wheel suffering from a gunshot to the upper body, Conley said.Paramedics rushed the man to an area hospital, where he died from his injuries, he said.The San Diego Police Department's Homicide Unit asked anyone with information regarding the shooting to call them at 619-531-2293. 775

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Mayor Kevin Faulconer and San Diego Police Chief David Nisleit have launched a digital marketing campaign that aims to fill more than 200 positions that are currently vacant in the department, the mayor announced Thursday.Downtown-based Loma Media will run the marketing campaign, which includes videos that will be shared on social media as well as a new recruitment website, with the goal of fully staffing the department by 2020, Faulconer said."Getting the San Diego Police Department back to full staffing of over 2,000 officers is a top priority," Nisleit said in a statement.In December 2017, the City Council approved an agreement to boost salaries for San Diego police officers through the 2020 fiscal year.Since the raises were announced, the number of officers lost to other law enforcement agencies is down 84 percent from last year, Faulconer said."The best way to keep San Diego one of the safest big cities in the country is by attracting the best and brightest recruits to the San Diego Police Department," Faulconer said in a statement. Gavin Newsom announced Monday the state will send .7 million to support San Diego's proposed purchase of two hotels to provide more than 330 rental housing units for San Diegans experiencing homelessness.The funds -- part of the state's Project Homekey -- will go toward the purchase of the Residence Inn Hotel Circle and Residence Inn Kearny Mesa, to be considered by the San Diego City Council in October.The purchase of the two properties would create 332 permanent supportive housing units, with 72 of the units having two bedrooms, enough to provide housing for more than 400 individuals. According to a city statement, the units were determined to require minimal work before people could move in. The Hotel Circle property was built in 2003, while the Kearny Mesa property was built in 1990 and underwent a renovation in 2013."San Diego has proven we can put state dollars to action on programs and services that reduce homelessness," said Mayor Kevin Faulconer.
