SAN DIEGO, Calif (KGTV) - In an effort to calm people's fears about new streetlights equipped with cameras and sensors, the City of San Diego will hold a public forum Wednesday night to answer questions and explain what the new technology does, and does not do.The meeting is from 5:30 to 7 pm, at the Malcom X Library on 5148 Market Street.Over the last two years, the city has installed more than 3,000 new streetlights that have "Smart City" technology built into them. The lights have cameras, microphones and sensors to track activity around them throughout the day.RELATED: "Smart" Streetlights coming to San Diego"Pedestrians walking by, cars parking and then leaving, cars traveling by, which direction, how fast," explains Cody Hooven, the City of San Diego's Chief Sustainability Officer. It will also track weather information in real time. That information is turned into meta-data and uploaded to the cloud. According to the city, it can be used for research or to build apps to make life easier. The goal is to turn San Diego into a "Smart City."Examples the city uses describe apps that can tell people when a parking spot opens up, or one that will gauge how many people pass by a certain spot every day.But critics worry about the privacy concerns of having thousands of government-controlled cameras around town.RELATED: Thousands of Streetlights to get "Smart" tech by the end of AugustHooven says the cameras are only used to gather the information. The footage from the cameras isn't accessible to the public, and the cameras are not for surveillance. Also, the footage will only be stored on the camera for 5 days and then deleted.Police may only ask for footage after a crime is committed, and only as part of an investigation. According to the city, the footage has already been used to help SDPD solve a handful of crimes.Hooven also says the cameras will use GPS technology to ensure they only get footage of public spaces, and not areas that are expected to be private. The system uses a process called "curtilage" to blur any areas that shouldn't be shown.Hooven says the city is ready to answer any other questions people have about the new lights at Wednesday's meeting."Technology is coming and we're trying to embrace it to provide a lot of benefits to the city and save us money," she says. "But we need to have these conversations about data privacy to make sure that our citizens and our community is comfortable with how we're using the information."For more details on the "Smart City" program, including an interactive map of where all of the new "Smart" streetlights have already been installed, click here. 2653

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - In response to safety concerns, a growing number of downtown San Diego public restrooms are being staffed with armed security guards. The city of San Diego has added armed guards to secure the public restrooms outside the San Diego Civic Theatre. The 6-month contract began in April and costs 0,000.00. It’s the latest downtown public restroom location to be staffed with armed security.Over the winter, armed security guards started being stationed at two other downtown public restroom locations, 13th St. and G St., and Park Blvd. and 11th Ave.RELATED: City may seek armed guards at Central Library, other parksThe Civic Theater public restrooms have a history of safety issues and a heavy transient population. San Diego police confirm that last fall, a city employee was reportedly beaten by a man who was trying to bring a shopping cart into one of the stalls.Patrons tell 10News that people are known to use drugs and sleep inside the restrooms. “Some of [the people] have bad tempers so you have to have the means to protect yourself,” says Allstate security guard Herbert Bridges. He’s one of the new guards outside the Civic Theatre, armed with a 9mm handgun. He says he and his coworkers are also allowed to carry batons and pepper spray.“We will never use weapons unless it’s absolutely necessary," he adds.In January, 10News’ Jon Horn broke the story that the city was looking at the possibility putting armed security guards inside various city buildings with heavy transient populations, like the Downtown Library. The city confirms it’s still several months until that could become a reality. 1649

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Deadly wildfires in California have burned more than 4 million acres this year, a new record for the number of acres burned in a single year. The previous record was two years ago when wildfires destroyed 1.67 million acres.California fire officials said the state hit the fearsome milestone Sunday with about two months still left in the fire season.More than 16,500 firefighters are working to contain at least 23 major wildfires across the state, officials said.Lightning strikes in mid-August caused some of the most devastating blazes and most of the damage has occurred since then.Since the beginning of the year, more than 8,200 wildfires have ignited, which have incinerated over 8,454 structures and killed 31 people. 754

San Diego City Council Tuesday night unanimously passed the location of a high-pressure underground pipeline to move sewage from San Diego's Morena treatment plant to a facility in Miramar. Residents say they're concerned the pipeline could break, wreaking havoc on the area. "Our concern is if that line was ruptured, bnecause it's under so miuch pressure, that it would spew raw sewage into the environment," said Ruth DeSantis, a longtime U.C. resident who heads the area's community foundation. DeSantis added that neighbors are concerned over traffic, noise, property values, and even smells seeping out of vents. There's a middle school, park, and hundreds of homes nearby. The city says it took various measures to minimize health and safety hazards, although some impacts like noise and traffic are unavoidable during construction.San Diego spokesman Jerry McCormick added that sewage geysers would not be possible under the pipeline system."Unlike a potable water system, where there are multiple loops to provide continuous pressure and in time of a rupture must be isolated by multiple valves, often times creating large releases of water, this system will not operate like that," McCormick said. "Instead, if there is a rupture, we can shut down the pumps and the flow will come to a very abrupt and quick stop."Community groups in University City are now teaming up with those in Clairemont to fight the project."We can put everything in Clairemont and Clairemont is sleeping, and I just wanted to say, that's not right," said Roseline Feral, of the nonprofit Clairemont Town Council. The city is aiming to have about a third of its water supply be reclaimed water by 2035. That would help combat shortages and price increases.                                       1922
