SAN DIEGO (CNS) - As part of its weeklong Spooky Spokes Week, the San Diego County Bike Coalition will host a series of Halloween-themed events Thursday throughout the city.From 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. and again from 2 to 5:30 p.m., bike enthusiasts can arrive at the Pacific Beach Library at 4275 Cass St. location for the "Halloween Spoketacular" event featuring bike maps, spooky backgrounds for photos and children's trick-or-treat bags.The weeklong Spooky Spokes event encourages cyclists to ride all week long and to learn about bike safety, biking as a solution to climate change and bike-friendly routes in the community during multiple special events.According to the San Diego Association of Governments, San Diego County has seen a 42% increase in bike trips during the pandemic. With more riders on the road and with daylight hours shortening, the bike coalition said it recognizes the importance of bike safety education in the community."Even though riders still need to take safety precautions, including physical distancing, everyone can still get out and ride in the community," a coalition statement said.During Spooky Spokes Week, running through Sunday, San Diego bike riders will get the opportunity to win prizes by riding and participating in events like the Spooky Spokes Trivia night and the costume contest.At 4 p.m., the San Diego County Bike Coalition is partnering with the California Office of Traffic Safety to invite all bike commuters in costume to receive free front bike lights at the San Diego Central Library, 330 Park Blvd. All riders on bikes can head to the San Diego Central Library where coalition staff will encourage safe, nighttime commuting with free bike light installation, tips and important safety information about riding in the dark.The annual bike light giveaway aims to increase the visibility of riders on city streets. This year, LightMeUp Safety Lights will be available for purchase, as will wheel lights. The first 10 people in costume to arrive will get one free wheel light. Suja Juice will also be offering cold-pressed juices to those in attendance.Finally, at 6:30 p.m., the coalition will host a panelist webinar about "Biking as a Solution to the Climate Crisis." SAN DIEGO (CNS) - An ex-con pleaded not guilty to a murder charge today for allegedly stabbing another man in an apparently random attack in a public restroom along the Pacific Beach boardwalk, 16 days after being released from prison.Martin Alvarez, 33, is accused in the Aug. 16 slaying of 39-year-old Michael Wagley, who was found mortally wounded at about 7:30 p.m. on Aug. 16 in the lavatory at 700 Grand Avenue. The victim was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.Witnesses reported seeing a man fleeing on a bicycle following the stabbing, San Diego Police Department Lt. Andra Brown said.The lieutenant said Alvarez, who matched the suspect description, was detained in the area and later arrested on suspicion of murder.The alleged motive for the slaying was unclear, but a prosecutor said the victim had no connection to his attacker.Deputy District Attorney George Modlin called the stabbing a ``random act of murder'' in which Alvarez allegedly attacked the victim from behind, stabbing him in the neck. The prosecutor said Alvarez then threw Wagley to the ground and stabbed him several more times.Modlin said that following his release from prison, Alvarez failed to report to Post Release Community Supervision and committed the murder 16 days later.It was uncertain what crime Alvarez was serving time for, though the criminal complaint alleges he has prior San Diego County convictions for assault with a deadly weapon and robbery.In addition to murder, Alvarez faces allegations of using a knife in the slaying.He was being held without bail, but a bail review hearing was set for Friday. 1627

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Officers found a man fatally wounded inside a vehicle in the Bay Terraces community of San Diego, a police lieutenant said Saturday.Officers discovered the vehicle off the road with no other vehicles around and it did not appear to have been involved in a traffic crash, San Diego Police Lt. Paul Conley said.Officers dispatched to the location a little before midnight in the 7000 block of Paradise Valley Road walked up to the vehicle and discovered a man behind the wheel suffering from a gunshot to the upper body, Conley said.Paramedics rushed the man to an area hospital, where he died from his injuries, he said.The San Diego Police Department's Homicide Unit asked anyone with information regarding the shooting to call them at 619-531-2293. 775

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - An April 30 trial date was set today for a North Carolina man accused of raping and murdering a 79-year-old woman in her Normal Heights home more than 31 years ago.Kevin Thomas Ford, now 62, was arrested in June and charged with murder and a special circumstance allegation of murder during a rape in connection with the May 20, 1987, death of Grace Hayden.Investigator Tony Johnson of the San Diego County District Attorney's Office was reviewing the cold case in May when he decided to submit a single fingerprint found on Hayden's stove to a national database.He found a match: a print submitted by police in connection with Ford's 2015 arrest on charges of communicating threats, authorities said.The fingerprint allowed San Diego detectives to issue a warrant for Ford's arrest in July.RELATED: Man pleads not guilty in 1987 rape, murder of San Diego womanThe case is expected to get pre-assigned to a judge next month. 950

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Councilwoman Barbara Bry jumped into second place Monday in the San Diego mayoral primary election, leapfrogging over Councilman Scott Sherman.The two candidates with the most votes will head to the general election in November, so depending on the final vote count, San Diego voters could be faced with a choice between presumptive front-runner Assemblyman Todd Gloria, a Democrat, and Republican Sherman -- or another Democrat in Bry.The latter option would guarantee San Diego its first Democrat mayor since Bob Filner resigned in 2013 and just the second Democrat elected to the nonpartisan position -- several Democrats served as interim mayors in 2005 and 2013 -- since Maureen O'Connor stepped down in 1992.Bry currently leads Sherman by just nine votes out of 338,673 counted in the race so far -- or .0026% of the vote.With a projected 37,000 provisional ballots left to be counted, and with Sherman's election-night lead of more than 3,000 votes officially made up, the race could prove exceedingly close.If Bry were to gain votes at the same rate as Monday -- which is far from assured -- she would win by just under 500 votes.In the race for City Council District 1, Will Moore maintained his lead over Aaron Brennan for second place.
