SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The San Diego Padres took a dozen teens undergoing cancer treatment to Spring Training this week.After spending months in and out of Rady Children’s Hospital, the teens say they were excited to get to experience what it feels like to be a normal kid again. “I have osteosarcoma, it's a bone cancer, it was in my leg, and I recently got it is surgically removed,” says patient Nicholas Herrmann. But today, lab tests and screenings are the last things on his mind. “It sounds so fun. For three days, they will get to meet players, attend batting practice and a game versus the Cincinnati Reds. This is the first year for the program. Parents say this trip is an excellent way for the teens to gain independence and form friendships with others. “It's so hard for them. My son is not in school, a lot of other kids aren’t in school either, so they’re not having that social interaction all the time,” says Nichole Elliott- Herrmann. “For us just to see them have fun and have a smile on their face, and not having to go into the hospital is amazing.”Parents will be staying behind for this trip. Participants will receive 0 for rifles, shotguns and hand guns and 0 for assault weapons, “no questions asked.”There is a limit of two gift cards per vehicle and authorities say all weapons must be operational. The drive will be held Thursday, November 21 between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m. in the SDCCU Stadium parking lot, sections A and B. Donors are encouraged to make an appointment ahead of time, but walk-ins are also welcome. The blood bank says they hope to get several hundred people to donate, because the winter is always a slow time."People get busy, they go on vacation, and blood donation kind of falls off as a top priority," says Blood Bank CEO David Wellis. "The need for blood, though, doesn't decline.The blood bank likes to have a 4-7 day supply on hand. Right now, Wellis says they have about 2 days. "We've done Comic-Con for 43 years. That started off small and it's giant now. "We're trying to count everybody once, only once, in the right place. We need help."Right now, the Census is putting on a hiring blitz around the country, with half-a-million jobs to fill. They're canvassing college campuses and other public places where people may be looking for a part-time job."It's for people, especially in this gig-economy, who are looking to get some extra money and be a part of history," says Bennett.Jobs range from counters who will go door to door to management. They can last anywhere from 6 weeks to two years. Pay starts at .50/hour."It's so important," says Bennett. "Our founders wanted to make sure our government looked like our citizens. That's why we do the Census."To be eligible, you must be a US Citizen, 18 years or older, and available to work a minimum of 20 hours per week.
