SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — In lieu of traditional Dia de los Muertos events that invite San Diegans to honor their loved ones in-person, the county is hosting a virtual festival this year.San Diego County's Parks and Recreation Department will hold a virtual celebration from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 1. The online festival will feature dance performances, a cultural storytime, and an arts and crafts workshop:The festival will also include a tour of the Rancho Guajome Adobe, an authentic 1850s adobe hacienda located in Vista that is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.The holiday originated thousands of years ago in Mesoamerica (Mexico and northern Central America). Dia de los Muertos is not a somber holiday. Rather than mourning, ancient Aztecs, Mayans, and Toltec celebrated and honored the dead by providing food, water, and tools to aid their journey into the afterlife. These are the days their souls were believed to return to earth, and altars were used to help them find their way home.Today, the ritual has grown beyond Mexico but continues as a show of appreciation for the joy our loved ones brought to our lives.During Dia de los Muertos, we honor those that passed away with colorful arts and crafts, foods, costumes, and parades. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Mixed Martial Arts fighter, Dean "The Boogeyman" Lister is asking the public to help him find a man he found inside his apartment. Lister, a Jiu Jitsu champion, has taken down opponents around the world - but he never expected a fight in his home. "I thought somebody was working in the apartment," he said, describing the man as covered in tattoos and wearing only a pair of boxers.Lister said the man wasn't making any sense, and soon Lister started to record him. In the video the man is heard saying that he went into the apartment because he thought it was a church. When the man realized that he was being record, Lister said he reached for a hammer - a moment that can be seen just before the video ends. Lister is a gun owner, and said he reached for his weapon when the stranger threatened him. At that point, the man got scared and Lister let him escape out the same window he broke in through. When police arrived, the man was gone. "I'm not trying to sound like any kind of saint," Lister said. "But whatever kind of money I lost, maybe it's not worth someone dying."Lister posted the video on Youtube and shared it with 10News in hopes that someone would recognize the intruder. "Hopefully he turns his life around," Lister said.   1327

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - It's been more than a month since the big ship fire in San Diego Bay.The flames are out but the boat is still there.It's become a sort of "morbid tourist attraction." Tourists and locals stopping to take photos of the charred Norton Sound bobbing up and down in the bay.RELATED: Multi-alarm fire erupts on fishing vessel docked in San Diego BayRestaurateur Melissa Moore was working just feet away when the ship mysteriously turned into a giant oven on Sept. 29. The smoke hung over Seaport Village sickening those nearby."As workers, we all started having headaches. We had to just leave," Moore recalled.Now it's early November and many are wondering why the boat is still parked in front of the Greek Islands Cafe - which Moore's family owns.RELATED: Questions remain after investigation into boat fire at San Diego HarborThe Port of San Diego told 10News they were working with the U.S. Coast Guard to move the ship as soon as possible. Contractors were disposing of chemicals on board.The Coast Guard cautioned there was no immediate leak or threat to the environment.Where did the ship come from?...10News learned the Norton Sound - which now has gaping holes in it - was originally owned by an American company in Seattle. It sailed into our bay in March.A San Diego shipping agent found it a place to dock. And then it was sold to a company in Mexico.Since the fire, a company employee has met with the Port and the Coast Guard at least once."I never did hear what was exactly in there," Moore said.No cargo was listed on the paperwork. San Diego Fire-Rescue said the cause of the fire was still under investigation, but there is currently no reason to suspect arson.So what now?...For now, the pier is locked off - which frustrates Moore."That is something people like to walk down," Moore said.RELATED: Mystery surrounds fishing boat that erupted in fire on San Diego BayStructural engineers must inspect it, according to the Coast Guard, and said the owner may not be able to afford to pay for the Norton Sound's removal.The Coast Guard is planning to use money from a special clean-up fund - paid for by a tax on oil refineries - to remove the ship. However, that may not happen for a few more weeks."The only positive thing is that people are still coming down here taking pictures.  (laughs)  other than that, they can take it away," Moore said. 2431

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - It sounds like a deal of a lifetime - guarantee a weeklong vacation at a coastal resort every year - for a one-time payment of 0.The county of San Diego is auctioning off nearly 900 timeshares, some in areas like Del Mar, Solana Beach, Carlsbad and downtown for as little as 0. Timeshares can also be transferred to out-of-town hotels, one year at a time. The county expects many to go at the initial offering price. A timeshare is when a person shares in the ownership of a property with others, so that each gets a week of vacation per year. Many of the timeshares were repossessed after the Great Recession, when owners failed to pay at least five years of property tax. "For one week of family bliss in a vacation once a year, this may be the opportunity for as little as 0," said Dan McAllister, the county treasurer-tax collector. "But it is a buyer beware sale."San Diego attorney Dan Eaton said there are many risks to buying a timeshare, and getting out of one can be very difficult."If you think you're just buying a 0 timeshare and you've got access to the timeshare for life without any further cost, that's a huge mistake," Eaton said. Timeshares include annual fees - including maintenance - that can get very expensive."If you stop paying those fees, they can foreclose," Eaton said. "It's an interest in real property."At the Solana Beach Sand Pebbles resort - starting bid 0 - annual fees range from 4 to 2 depending on unit size. And some of the timeshares don't include some parts of the year. Allison Russell, the resort's property manager, said it's vital people do their due diligence before buying. She said the resort books up early, and owners need to reserve their week sometimes far in advance.Eaton said timeshares can work if you plan to go to the same resort year after year, but with so many options now available - including airbnb - it may be best to keep that 0.The county auction is online and runs from May 4 to May 9.
