It was a moment one lucky Norfolk, Virginia couple didn’t know was coming.Derek Page and his fiancée, Veronica Singer, got a one-of-a-kind gift Sunday for their upcoming wedding in October.“I knew my brother was planning something, but I had no idea it would be this,” explained Derek.Derek’s brother, Alex Page, planned the surprise after coming across a Facebook post.“Instead of getting something off their registry, something that’s replaceable, I just thought it’d be a fun, unique different gift that creates a lasting memory,” said Alex Page.32-year-old Miles Hoyle surprised the couple on their porch by playing a variety of songs on his accordion. The accordionist has been playing the squeezebox for 13 years.The performances are something he calls 'Accordion-at-your-Door' where Hoyle plays songs for special occasions and celebrations - one note and one doorstep at a time.“I enjoy it a lot,” Hoyle said. “I think it helps bring them a little joy too, at least I hope so.”Hoyle started playing outside of people’s homes before the pandemic but said business ramped up right after the stay-at-home order went into effect.“I’ve also played outside a few restaurants on their porches,” he said.Hoyle also plays the accordion in his two bands, The Fighting Jamesons and Mosquito Cabaret, but as the COVID-19 crisis put most live entertainment on pause, his solo performances picked up traction.“I think it’s a win-win for everybody,” Hoyle said.The final song Hoyle played for the couple was Elvis Presley’s “Can’t help falling in love.” The couple applauded after the 15-minute show ended. Derek Page said the surprise left them with lasting memories.“I could not have even expected this, not in a million years,” he said. “This was amazing. Life keeps racing forward for everyone except me.The actor in this new ad is what Caleb Sorohan would have looked like, if he hadn't been killed eight years ago.His mother, Mandi Sorohan said, "It's almost like Caleb came back to tell people, look this is what I should be doing. But I can't because I was texting and driving."Sorohan and her family worked with forensic artists and visual effects teams to recreate what her son would look like today. All for a chilling yet powerful ad by AT&T showing the future distracted driving can take away."You don't think of all the things that could have happened," Sorohan says. "Never got to happen. So to me I think that's the biggest part of this ad."Caleb had just finished his first semester of college when he read a text message while driving, veered into oncoming traffic, and hit an SUV head on. He died instantly."It happened and he made a terrible mistake," Sorohan says. "And we're just trying to make sure that other people don't make that same mistake because not only could you kill somebody else you could kill yourself."The ad is a part of AT&T's "It Can Wait" campaign, which has inspired nearly 25 million pledges to not drive distracted. Sorohan hopes this will add to that number, and show people this isn't just a teen issue, but an issue for everyone."We'll never get to talk to Caleb again," Caleb's brother Griffin shares in a longer version of the ad. "We'll never get to do regular day things with Caleb again."Caleb's sister also took part; the family is hoping that by doing so, people can see the lives impacted by distracted driving go far beyond their own."They should want to come home to the people that they love," Sorohan says. "Every night and they should know how important they are to the people who love them. So don't pick up your phone in the car, just put it down and forget about it until you get to where you're going. IRVING, Texas – In a letter sent to scouting families Monday, the Boy Scouts of America (BSA) announced its support of the Black Lives Matter movement.The BSA’s National Executive Committee pointed out that the organization wasn’t living up to one of the 12 points of The Scout Law – bravery.“Brave means taking action because it is the right thing to do and being an upstander even when it may prompt criticism from some,” wrote the committee. “We realize we have not been as brave as we should have been because, as Scouts, we must always stand for what is right and take action when the situation demands it.”The BSA went on to say that there is no place for racism in scouting or in its communities, and it won’t be tolerated.“We condemn the murders of George Floyd, Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor and all those who are not named but are equally important. We hear the anguish, feel the heartbreak, and join the country’s resolve to do better,” the committee wrote.The organization also said it would be introducing a specific diversity and inclusion merit badge that will be required to become an Eagle Scout.“It will build on components within existing merit badges, including the American Cultures and Citizenship in the Community merit badges, which require Scouts to learn about and engage with other groups and cultures to increase understanding and spur positive action,” wrote the committee.Additionally, the BSA is also committing to reviewing every element of its programs to ensure diversity and inclusion are ingrained at every level for participants and volunteers by applying a standard that promotes racial equality and denounces racism, discrimination, inequality and injustice.It’s requiring diversity and inclusion training for all BSA employees starting July 1 and taking action toward introducing a version for volunteersAnd lastly, the organization is conducting a review of property names, events and insignia to build on and enhance the organization’s nearly 30-year ban on use of the Confederate flag and to ensure that symbols of oppression are not in use today or in the future. 2115
