SAN FRANCISCO, Dec. 15 (Xinhua) -- Microsoft on Thursday announced that it will automatically upgrade the Internet Explorer (IE) to the latest version to give Windows customers more protection against malicious software.According to the company's blog post, starting from Australia and Brazil next January, users of Windows XP, Vista and Windows 7 will get the IE updates if they have turned on automatic updating via Windows Update.Microsoft said the industry has been moving toward automatic updates as a norm since the biggest online threat these days is social engineering malware typically targeting outdated software like Web browsers.Automatic upgrades, also called silent updates for displaying no messages or windows during the progress, has been deployed by Google's Chrome and Mozilla's Firefox. It can ensure users have the newest versions of the browser, and therefore is seen as a big improvement to Internet security.According to the Microsoft Security Intelligence Report released in October, 99 percent of all attacks during the first half of 2011 came from unpatched but known vulnerabilities, and 90 percent of infections were attributed to vulnerability exploitation that had a security update available from the software vendor for more than a year.In the latest research data from Web analytics company StatCounter, Microsoft's IE has a strong lead with 40.63 percent of global browser market share, followed by 25.7 percent of Chrome and 25.23 percent of Firefox.

BEIJING, Nov. 28 (Xinhuanet) -- Scientists in Canada have raised a prospect of reversing Alzheimer's disease by deep brain stimulation, according to media reports Monday.The technique here is known as deep brain stimulation -- applying electricity directly to regions of the brain. It has been used in tens of thousands of patients with Parkinson's as well as having an emerging role in Tourette's Syndrome and depression.The study at the University of Toronto took six patients with the condition. Deep brain stimulation was applied to the fornix -- a part of the brain which passes messages onto the hippocampus.Lead researcher Prof Andres Lozano said you would expect the hippocampus to shrink by five per cent on average in a year in patients with Alzheimer's.After 12 months of stimulation, he said one patient had a five per cent increase and another had an eight per cent increase.Prof Lozano told BBC: "This is the first time that brain stimulation in a human being has been shown to grow an area of your brain.""It was an amazing finding for us," he said.The findings were presented at the Society for Neuroscience conference in November but they have yet to be published in an academic journal.To test whether this is really working, rather than being a fluke result, the researchers are going to perform a larger trial.

SAN FRANCISCO, Nov. 21 (Xinhua) -- E-commerce and online payment giant eBay announced on Monday that it has acquired New York-based technology startup Hunch, an online platform that delivers customized recommendations to users based on their individual tastes.Hunch's team and expertise in areas like machine learning, data mining and predictive modeling are expected to help eBay to integrate more advanced recommendations into its website, said the San Jose, California-based company."Unlike traditional online retail approaches, Hunch will enable eBay to move beyond standard item-to-item recommendations and use a broader variety of members' online tastes and interests to suggest new and interesting items for them to browse and buy on eBay," said the company in a press release.Terms of the deal were not disclosed. Technology news site TechCrunch founder Michael Arrington said in his personal blog prior to the acquisition announcement that eBay would acquire Hunch for 80 million U.S. dollars.Hunch, co-founded by popular photo-sharing service Flickr co- founder Caterina Fake with an 11-person team of MIT graduates, was open to the public in 2009. MANILA, Jan. 9 (Xinhua) -- Philippine telecommunication companies cut off the signal of mobile phones in parts of Manila where millions of people are expected to converge for the feast of the Black Nazarene on Monday.Philippine Deputy Presidential Spokesperson Abigail Valte said that the move was part of the precautionary measures that the government has been undertaking following terror threats."Malacanang (Palace) confirms that the government asked the telcoms to temporarily disconnect their services in the route of the Black Nazarene procession as part of the security measures agreed upon during the meeting on Sunday," she said in a regular news briefing.She said that the disruption in mobile services would last for the entire duration of the procession of the Black Nazarene.She admitted that the signal of the cellular phones was disconnected in the past, and terrorists used the mobile phones as triggering device for bombs.Asked if the government considered the possible losses of telecommunication firms due to the disconnection of signals, Valte said, "as holders of a franchise, the public safety is paramount."President Benigno Aquino III personally warned on Sunday the public to be cautious in joining the feast of the Black Nazarene amid possible terrorist attacks. The government is expecting 9 million devotees to participate in the celebration.The Black Nazarene is the patron saint of Quiapo church. The statue was brought to Manila by a Spanish priest in 1607. It was aboard a ship that caught fire, the image was burned, and it came to be known as the "Black Nazarene" which people have since decided to preserve and honor.
