SHENYANG, May 23 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice Premier Hui Liangyu has encouraged local governments and farmers in northeast China to expand grain production to stabilize the nation's food supply.Hui made the call during an inspection tour to Liaoning Province, a major rice-producing province in northeast China, from Friday to Saturday.The grain planting situation this summer is challenging as persistent cold weather since last winter has ravaged major production zones in the north.Hui said northeast China is a key rice production area. With good quality, rice produced here has a great market demand. Hui encouraged farmers to plant more rice and expand production capacity.According to the Ministry of Agriculture, northeast China's grain output accounted for about one fifth of the country's total food yield last year.Grain output reached 530.8 million tonnes in 2009, the sixth consecutive year of growth in grain yield.

BOAO, Hainan, April 9 (Xinhua) -- Singapore Senior Minister Goh Chok Tong said Friday that he expects China, and similarly for most part of Asia recovering from the economic downturn, to maintain good growth this year."The economic recovery has started. That's a good news for Asia," Goh, also former Prime Minister of Singapore, said in an exclusive interview with Xinhua in Boao, a coastal resort in south China's Hainan Province.Goh is here for the annual meeting of Boao Forum for Asia (BFA), a pan-Asian platform of dialogue for key issues affecting Asia and the world, which will officially open Saturday. He was elected a member of the BFA's board of directors Thursday."The worst is behind us," he said, adding that China's recovery has a solid foundation and is on a good growth path."We've paid attention to economic fundamentals. If the economic fundamentals are right, we can let the storm pass by," Goh said. "That's what Singapore and China did."He said some damages in the global financial crisis were not very severe, "so once the storm passes, we grow again."Singapore also saw a very good growth in the first quarter of this year and "the growth exceeded out expectation," he said.Goh emphasized the importance of free trade. BEIJING, March 27 (Xinhua) -- China's Ministry of Land and Resources (MLR) said Saturday it would assemble more than 1,100 engineers and workers from across the country to dig over 1,600 wells in the country's southwest, where a severe drought is likely to continue.All of those professionals would be arriving at the droughty areas by April 1 and the first batch set off on Saturday, said the MLR in a statement on its website.More than 1,600 wells would be drilled, providing 200,000 cubic meters of drinking water per day for 2 million people and 1 million head of livestock, said the ministry, hoping to finish digging 1,400 of the wells by May 10.So far, the MLR has already dug over 100 wells, which can produce drinking water for more than 100,000 people.The drought, which has left southwest China suffering since last Autumn, would likely continue till May as no substantial rainfall was expected ahead of the rainy season, according to meteorological agencies.It has left 18 million residents and 11.7 million heads of livestock in the region with drinking water shortages and caused direct economic losses of 23.7 billion yuan (3.5 billion U.S. dollars), data from the Ministry of Civil Affairs showed.

YICHUAN, Henan, April 6 (Xinhua) -- The death toll after a central China mine blast last week has risen to 40，with 6 still missing, local authorities said on Tuesday.An official with the rescue headquarters confirmed Tuesday that 98 people were working underground in the Guomin coal mine in Yichuan county when the blast occurred at 7:20 p.m. on March 31. 57 were lifted to the ground unharmed, 35 were killed and six are still missing.The explosion also killed five and injured one on the ground, the official said.The illegal coal mine owned by village head Wang Guozheng was poorly managed and even does not have a payroll list. That's why the dead and missing could not be identified, the official said.Ten people allegedly accountable for the accident are under control by police, including mine owner Wang Guozheng, who was previously given a reprieved imprisonment sentence in 2009 for covering up a mine accident.Work safety authorities ordered the mine to suspend operations after a gas outburst on May 1, 2009. Production ever since has been illegal, said a statement from the Henan Provincial Administration of Work Safety.
