We're seeing more antiviral products popping up that claim to protect you against COVID-19.Pakistan-based denim company Artistic Denim Mills is making pants and masks using antiviral technology it says tested nearly 100% effective in 30 minutes against coronavirus.Denim brand Diesel is planning to add different antiviral technology to its jeans next year that it says can disable nearly all viral activity within two hours of contact.Other companies are selling antibacterial gloves that claim to destroy bacteria and micro-organisms.These are big claims, but are they true?“The people that we shouldn't trust, honestly, are the people that stand to gain financially from this,” said Dr. Mark Shrime, a professor at Harvard Medical School. “Not because they're necessarily nefarious, but they have an ulterior motive to market these products to our uncertainty and to our fear without necessarily doing the due diligence that we might want them to do in less uncertain times.”Shrime says we don't know a lot about how COVID-19 spreads on surfaces. There are no confirmed cases of surface transmission so far.He questions if these products actually do anything for you.“For sure, they haven't been rigorously tested,” said Shrime. “You will see things often that they have been scientifically formulated or other words like that, that make it sound like this is super cool, but they haven't necessarily been rigorously tested to see if they actually prevent the virus.”He points to antibacterial soaps that were all the rage for a while. The Food and Drug Administration later said they're no more effective than regular soap and water. He says instead of paying extra for what companies say is extra protection, focus on what we know works – wash your hands and wear a mask. 1783

WASHINGTON (AP) — The White House says Vice President Mike Pence’s airplane struck a bird upon takeoff from a New Hampshire airport, causing the pilot to return to the airport out of caution. Pence was returning to Washington from a campaign event Tuesday at an airport hangar in nearby Gilford. When Air Force Two took off from Manchester-Boston Regional Airport, it struck a bird. A senior administration official said the vice president and his entourage were in no danger. The official wasn't authorized to address the matter publicly and spoke on condition of anonymity. 583

Wendy Vitter, one of President Donald Trump's judicial nominees, refused on Wednesday to say whether a landmark civil rights opinion was correctly decided, triggering outrage and renewed criticism of the President's efforts to reshape the judiciary. At issue was Brown v. the Board of Education -- a seminal opinion that held that state laws requiring separate but equal schools violated the Constitution."I don't mean to be coy," Vitter, who is up for a seat on the US District Court for the Eastern District of Louisiana, said at her confirmation hearing, "but I think I can get into a difficult, difficult area when I start commenting on Supreme Court decisions -- which are correctly decided and which I may disagree with." 734

WASHINGTON (AP) — U.S. employers added 638,000 jobs in October, a solid pace though far fewer than needed to regain most of the jobs lost to the pandemic recession just as new viral cases are setting record highs. The October gain suggested that a tentative economic recovery may remain intact even in the face of a surging viral outbreak. The report Friday from the Labor Department said the unemployment rate fell to 6.9% from 7.9% in September. Eight months after the virus struck the United States, the economy still has recovered barely half the 22 million jobs that were lost to the pandemic. 606

We have all been there. You go through the drive thru at McDonald's only to find out that the ice cream machine is down, and the restaurant is unable to sell milkshakes and cones. What if you could find out before driving to the restaurant if the ice cream machine is working? There is an app for it. The app is called "Ice Check," and the app is available for iPhone users. The application relies on users self-reporting on the status of ice cream machines. "Ice Check is the app for McDonald’s ice cream lovers who are sick and tired of hearing the “machine is down!” Our real-time updates will save you time and energy, leading you to ice cream machines that actually work BEFORE you get on line to order," the app's description says. The app is free and available in the App Store.  824
