SAN DIEGO (CNS) - More than 1.3 million ballots had been received by the San Diego County Registrar of Voters by mid-afternoon today, with around 51,000 votes cast at polling locations so far.The San Diego County Registrar's Office reported 1.36 million ballots collected by mid-afternoon out of the 1.95 million registered voters in the county.With county polling locations open early, about 126,000 residents were able to cast their votes in person over the past four days, the Registar's Office said.Mail-in ballots were sent to all registered voters in the county on Oct. 5, even those who had not requested one. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A motorist was killed in a fiery solo vehicle crash off Interstate 5 in the Barrio Logan area, authorities said Monday.The crash was reported shortly after 9:30 p.m. Sunday on southbound I- 5 near Cesar E. Chavez Parkway, California Highway Patrol Officer Tommy Strickland said.Investigators determined a pickup truck hit the center divide, then went down an embankment before ending up on a nearby street and catching fire, Strickland said.The truck's driver was pronounced dead at the scene, but no details about the victim were immediately available.The crash shut down the right two lanes near Cesar Chavez Parkway until about 11:45 p.m. Sunday. 675

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A North Carolina man who raped and murdered a 79- year-old woman in her Normal Heights home more than three decades ago was sentenced Friday to life in prison without the possibility of parole. Kevin Thomas Ford, 63, was convicted by a San Diego jury last month for the May 20, 1987, murder of Grace Hayden, who was strangled and smothered during the rape, according to Deputy District Attorney Valerie Summers. The prosecutor said Ford worked as a driver for older medical patients in San Diego and had driven Hayden two days before her body was found on the floor of her bedroom. DNA on the victim's body, as well as a fingerprint found on her stovetop led to Ford's 2018 arrest in North Carolina. Jurors deliberated for about five hours before convicting Ford of murder and special circumstance allegations of murder in the commission of rape and murder in the commission of a burglary. At Friday's sentencing, Ford addressed the court, saying he sympathized with Hayden and her family and couldn't imagine if something similar had befallen his mother or grandmother. ``I can't imagine what it's like, having to go through what Grace Hayden went through. It must have been a night of sheer terror,'' Ford said. “But the police got the wrong man. Whoever did this is either dead or still running around free. I didn't do it. God knows I didn't do it.'' San Diego County Superior Court Judge Louis R. Hanoian expressed his disappointment with Ford's denial of the crime, calling the killing ``despicable'' and ``heinous,'' prior to imposing the life without parole sentence. ``You have to be the most unlucky person on the planet, maybe the most unlucky person who has ever lived on this planet, to have supposedly engaged in consensual sexual intercourse with a 79-year-old invalid woman, left your biological material in her, and then within -- 12 hours? -- that woman is found dead as the result of a rape murder that you didn't do?'' SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Authorities put out a call Tuesday for any additional alleged victims of a mortuary services worker accused of looting a recently deceased Spring Valley man's home, carrying away valuables with a gurney and a body bag.Sammy Willie Gates, 49, allegedly ransacked the 60-year-old man's house late on the night of Aug. 31, about 11 hours after deputies conducting a welfare check found the resident dead of natural causes, according to sheriff's officials.On Sept. 2, one of the victim's relatives reported discovering items, including a firearm and safe, missing from the residence, Sgt. Karen Bloch said. Two days later, the family reported that reviews of surveillance camera footage had revealed that the home of the victim, whose name has not been released, had been burglarized.The video clips showed a man -- later identified by investigators as Gates, owner of independently operated Mortuary Transportation Services -- arriving at the man's house in a white utility van, the sergeant said.Gates allegedly entered the home and exited shortly thereafter with two bags filled with stolen property, then returned with a gurney and an empty body bag that he used to haul away more property.On Sept. 9, detectives from the Rancho San Diego Sheriff's Station served a search warrant at Gates' El Cajon-area home, where the deceased man's safe and gun allegedly were recovered, along with 16 additional firearms, many believed to be war relics dating back to the early 1900s."Two additional safes, multiple personal identifying documents, jewelry, watches, war medals, comic books and several thousand dollars in collectable coins were also recovered from Gates' residence," the sergeant alleged.
