SAN DIEGO (KGTV)- While indoor dining at restaurants across San Diego County will be banned for at least three weeks starting Tuesday, outdoor dining can continue.Outdoor dining will be permitted until 10 p.m. and take out, delivery and drive-thru are still allowed.San Diego landed on California’s watchlist as COVID-19 cases continue to rise, prompting the latest restrictions.Museums, movie theaters, cardrooms, and family entertainment centers must also restrict indoor activities.Poway Mayor Steve Vaus hopes to make the situation a little easier to manage for Poway restaurant owners.RELATED: San Diego to close some businesses as COVID-19 cases spike“With the state and the county restricting indoor dining for three weeks, I wanted to make sure to provide a lifeline,” he said. “We could buy some picnic tables, put them in parking lots and adjacent areas as long as they need them, and then we can repurpose them in the parks.”His proposal will head to Poway city council for approval on Tuesday night.“I suspect that the council is going to approve this unanimously,” he said.Vaus said the tables would be paid for through the CARES Act, and business owners would not have to pay a fee to use them.“Absolutely free,” he said. “We’re trying to make life easier. We have removed any restrictions; they don’t have to get a permit or anything.”San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer also plans to sign an emergency executive order to provide relief for restaurant owners.“The City is finalizing a new ordinance for Council approval that will cut fees and streamline permits to make it easier for businesses to operate outdoors,” said Mayor Faulconer in a statement to ABC 10News.RELATED: San Diego County added to California's 'monitoring list,' certain businesses told to shut down“Given that the state’s new shutdown order has an immediate impact on local businesses, on Tuesday, I’ll be signing an emergency Executive Order that will waive regulatory requirements and help restaurants expand their service outdoors, increasing physical distance between employees and customers.”Meanwhile, business owners across the county are doing what they can to stay afloat.“We’ve been thinking what we could do, and we are ready to open for outdoor dining and give it our best shot,” said Suzan Meleka, owner of Charlie’s Family Restaurant in Escondido.Meleka said she would be using her outdoor patio area and potentially adding more tables and shading in the parking lot.“Currently there’s four, and we are going to add more, and they will be six feet apart for sure,” she said.While outdoor seating hasn’t been the most ideal for some restaurants, it has proven to be successful in many beach communities.“At our venues, I think it’s been really good outdoors,” said Steve Thomas, General Manager at Belmont Park.Cannonball Sushi and Beach House Bar & Grill already operate outside, but changes will be made at Draft South Mission to expand outdoor seating in hopes of keeping the restaurant entirely in business.“We just moved some more tables around, expanded the outdoor seating, and we’re going to pivot to make sure that we can still have Draft fully opened with the outdoor section,” he said. 3204
SAN FRANCISCO -- A massive fire broke out at a two-story commercial building in San Francisco Saturday night, according to KRON.The fire started inside the building and spread outward. The blaze took roughly 140 firefighters to extinguish.A total of eight people were displaced by the fire, but no one was injured.The cause of the fire is under investigation. 367

SAN DIEGO (KGTV)- San Diego State University held an inauguration for their new president. Dr. Adela de la Torre is the ninth president for SDSU but the first female president. She was appointed in 2018. During her speech she said, “I know I stand here as first woman to serve as permanent president to lead this university, but I recognize that I stand on the shoulders of women who have shaped the identity of SDSU from the very beginning”. Looking at the coming years, she says there is critical work that needs to be done. SAN DIEGO (KGTV)-- The tenants of two galleries in North Park tell 10News the new owner of their building has raised the rent so high they're been left with no choice but to leave. Owners at The Studio Door and Good Friday will both be gone from their current location on 30th Street by the end of the summer. "It was devastating we've been searching trying to find something new another space but the rents are just so high right now, " said Chris Smith, who has been with The Studio Door for nearly four years.Smith says the rent went from ,000 a month to nearly ,000. He says the galleries were some of the only left in the area."There used to be a lot of artists and art galleries here in North Park," he said. "That's what really built up North Park to be what it is and as the rents went up they all just get pushed out." SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -The extended patio seating in the Gaslamp Quarter is here to stay for now, according to the Gaslamp Quarter Association.Thanks to a special events permit, as long as social distancing is required, restaurants will overflow into the streets with patio dining Thursday through Saturday each weekend through the end of the year.Manager at The Field Phil Nestor was thrilled to see how busy it was Saturday, saying the patios made a "100%, a million times over," difference to recuperating after being shut down during the pandemic.He said people feel more comfortable sitting outside, and diners said they enjoyed the atmosphere."I think it's actually a pretty good idea, it reminds me of my time in Europe so I think it's pretty cool," Luis Morales said.Fifth Avenue shut down between G and L Streets Thursday through Saturday to make way for the patios, and was slow to start."I think the first day everyone was finding their feet I guess, they were seeing how many tables they could put in their area," Nestor said.By Saturday nearly a dozen restaurants expanded into the streets.Morales said they enjoyed themselves, "we came out to get together with the boys and just finally get a sense of normalcy."Right now normalcy comes with hand sanitizing stations at each table and masks while you're waiting to be seated."I always take my precautions," one diner said. The man said he came down from Los Angeles to celebrate his birthday and felt safer in San Diego compared to up north where Orange County reduced their mask policy to "strongly recommended."Last weekend images of crowds not social distancing, or wearing masks in the Gaslamp Quarter garnered harsh words from County Supervisor Nathan Fletcher. He said earlier this week targeted enforcement would ensure this doesn't happen again.Nestor said the weight falls on restaurants to enforce the county's policies, "we're responsible for our patio and the surrounding areas and making sure people are in the line wearing masks and they're social distancing.""You can't just run into the street and tell someone to do something but you're doing your best and I think most people whether they're drunk or not, I think taking responsibility for themselves too which is a good thing to see," he said.He and other businesses are hopeful as long as the patio dining is successful and they keep everyone healthy this could become a more permanent fixture."I hope it becomes a permanent thing, a lot of the restaurants do," Nestor said, hopeful business will continue to climb, helping them recover from the pandemic. 2592
