SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Sen. Kamala Harris questioned U.S. Customs and Border Protection Commissioner Kevin McAleenan on the economic fallout of last month's nearly six-hour closure of the San Ysidro Port of Entry during a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing Tuesday in Washington, D.C. CBP fully closed the San Ysidro Port of Entry to vehicles from 11:30 a.m. to around 5 p.m. Nov 25 after a group of asylum-seeking members of the migrant caravans in Tijuana attempted to cross the border and illegally enter the U.S. CBP agents used tear gas and pepper ball guns to quell the crowds. According to Harris' office, businesses in the city of San Ysidro lost .3 million due to the closure. Roughly 5 billion in annual gross regional product in San Diego and Imperial counties is reliant on interborder commerce. ``You can appreciate that there's a lot of concern in that part of our state from business owners, especially when the president has threatened to `permanently close the border,' that there would be real economic harm to that region,'' Harris said. According to McAleenan, the agency remains in daily contact with the San Diego Association of Governments and the San Diego Regional Chamber of Commerce regarding the closure and its economic effects. The CBP is also conducting a review of the incident, which McAleenan said happens after every use of force. ``I personally wrote into our operational plan the need to maximize legitimate trade and travel while we made sure that any caravan arrival would be managed in a safe way, so I delegated that authority to the lead field coordinator in San Diego area,'' McAleenan said. ``They actually opened it up a little bit before they felt that we had full resolution, because they thought it was a secure enough situation. And they worked very hard to catch up on the traffic backlogs.'' Harris also requested data from the CBP on how many migrants the agency has referred for prosecution for trafficking allegations. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - San Diego County public health officials have reported 2,686 new COVID-19 infections -- the 26th consecutive day with more than 1,000 cases.On Saturday, there were no new virus-related deaths reported.Saturday was the 18th day with more than 2,000 new cases.Another 35 people also were hospitalized, according to Saturday's data, and another two were sent to intensive care units.The county's cumulative cases increased to 142,647 and the death toll remained at 1,402.Nine new community outbreaks were confirmed on Friday. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The entire passenger and freight rail line between Oceanside and San Diego will be closed at midnight and remain shut down all weekend for improvements, according to the San Diego Association of Governments.Crews will shut down the lines just after midnight Saturday through 5 a.m. Monday, according to SANDAG, which will make several improvements, including work on the Mid-Coast Trolley project, extending the UC San Diego blue line trolley from the Santa Fe Depot in Downtown San Diego north toward UC San Diego.Four rail services use the San Diego segment of the Los Angeles-San Diego-San Luis Obispo coastal rail corridor: North County Transit District, Metrolink, Amtrak and the BNSF freight line.Passengers using the Coaster train line are advised to use the BREEZE Route 101 or local buses. Amtrak will offer bus connections from Oceanside to San Diego for passengers with reservations.Crews working on the Mid-Coast Trolley project will remove temporary support structures, build retaining walls, protect slopes and install fencing and cable railing, as well as sewer, water, and drainage pipes.The entire project is expected to be completed late next year.Near the San Diego River Bridge, crews will add nearly a mile of double track across the river to create a continuous 7-mile stretch of double track in the southernmost portion of the coastal rail corridor.During construction, nearby residents and businesses can expect intermittent noise and lights.Passenger rail service is scheduled to resume for the Monday morning commute. 1569

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - San Diego Gulls coach Dallas Eakins was Monday named the coach of its NHL parent team, the Anaheim Ducks.Eakins coached the Gulls throughout their four seasons in the American Hockey League, guiding them to a 154-95-23 record and three Calder Cup playoff berths. They reached the Western Division finals in the recently concluded 2018-19 season.The Gulls had the best record in the AHL's Pacific Division since its inception in the 2015-16 season.The 52-year-old Eakins called his hiring as the Ducks' coach ``a tremendous honor for my family.''``I am truly humbled,'' Eakins said. ``It was a privilege to serve as head coach of the San Diego Gulls during our first four seasons and I look forward to build off that success here in Anaheim.''Eakins replaces Randy Carlyle, who was fired on Feb. 10. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The aircraft carrier USS Theodore Roosevelt will change its home port from San Diego to Bremerton, Washington, ahead of scheduled maintenance slated for next summer, the Navy announced Wednesday.The ship, which is currently deployed in the Western Pacific, will enter Puget Sound Naval Shipyard for scheduled maintenance known as docking planned incremental availability, or DPIA.Lt. Travis Callaghan said the maintenance required to maintain the Nimitz-class carrier's service life is more involved than what can be done pier- side in San Diego. DPIA involves putting the ship in drydock and will require facilities, equipment and personnel available in Bremerton, Callaghan said.The carrier recently resumed its scheduled deployment in the Indo- Pacific after spending months docked in Guam due to the widespread COVID-19 outbreak aboard the ship.The ship originally departed San Diego on Jan. 17 for a deployment, but was diverted to Guam on March 27 when the outbreak took hold, ultimately infecting more than 1,100 sailors, and killing one, Chief Aviation Ordnanceman Charles Thacker, 41.Navy officials said the carrier now operates with a new COVID-19 standard operating procedure, which modifies how crew members move through the ship, expands meal hours and establishes new social distancing procedures. 1337
