SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - There are numerous books written by Navy SEALs, most about combat. But a former SEAL from San Diego is turning the tables, writing a book about success in business called, “Taking Point: A Navy SEAL’s 10 Fail-Safe Principles For Leading Through Change.” In the book, author Brent Gleeson uses the principles of teamwork he learned in SEAL training and how that culture can lead to success for any growing company. These days you'll find Brent Gleeson in a blazer, on a stage, speaking all over the world to business leaders. But just a few years ago Gleeson’s attire of choice was desert camo, accessorized with the most high-tech equipment as a member of the world's most elite fighting force. However, before his time as a SEAL, Gleeson was in graduate school at SMU in Dallas, he worked in finance, and was an entrepreneur. The blending of those two lives led to this. His newly released book, “Taking Point.”     "It's not your typical SEAL book that gives you some leadership philosophies but actually teaches you how to successfully lead lasting change in any company or organization," said Gleeson. The book contains simple philosophies derived directly from his experience training for and on SEAL combat teams. Like surviving BUD/s training, something only 20 percent of candidates who enter the program ever finish to become Navy SEALs eventually. 1404

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - With picture-perfect views, San Diego appears to be a flawless place to live. However, with the average rent for an apartment around ,000 and the cost to purchase a home around 0,000, America’s finest city loses some of its appeal.“Everybody said you’re set with your life,” Chris Allen explains.Allen is a former Navy rescue diver, swim coach, a husband, and a dog dad who fell on hard times because of a bad motorcycle accident.“I had like a 9 percent chance to live,” Allen said. This accident forced him out of work for six months, so he started living in his van. He ended up converting his van to include a fridge, a fold out bed, lighting and uses a bucket with kitty litter for the restroom. Now a year later, he’s embraced van life and says it provides a chance to travel and save money.“It’s more freedom, but at the same time it’s more responsibility,” Allen said.Allen isn’t alone. During a weekend meet-up, around 300 vans and van-lifers packed Fiesta Island to explore each other's vans, and discuss life on the road.Liz Bryant, who works as a social media influencer, is living in a converted Mercedes sprinter van. She said she started living in her van for the freedom. “We don’t want to be tied down to an apartment. We don’t want to be tied down to a monthly payment,” Bryant said. Sky Montrell is moving into her van because she is tired of throwing away ,000 a month on rent. “The cost of living in LA is crazy,” Montrell said. Breanne Acio runs SD Camper Vans and converts vans for people looking for life on wheels. She says she’s seen an increase in customers recently. “A lot of people are downsizing, and they are putting their lives first and doing things they thought they could only do when they’re 65 and retired,” Acio said. The Van Life Movement has made a mark on social media. The hashtag "van life" has been used more than four million times. Even though the movement is growing in popularity, sleeping in your vehicle on city streets isn’t allowed. Those who do it, are willing to risk a ticket or have to move around from location to location. City parking regulations include: 2211

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - With just three weeks to go, the Veterans Village of San Diego says they're about 0,000 short on cash donations for this year's "Stand Down" event.Stand Down, now in its 32nd year, is a weekend-long event that helps homeless veterans connect to all the services they need to get off the streets.Program Director Darcy Pavich says people and companies across San Diego typically donate about 0,000 worth of in-kind donations and 0,000 in cash each year. While the in-kind contributions are on track, the cash is short. Pavich says that means they won't be able to buy a lot of the items that can't be donated."What we won't have is things like the tables and chairs, cots to sleep on, some the structure that we build that we have to purchase," she says.Around 800 homeless veterans go to the Stand Down event each year. Marine Corps Veteran Ritesh Kumar Patel says it was the difference between him living on the streets and getting his life back together."It was mind-blowing," he says of the amount of help he got. "I was on the verge of dying, and I didn't realize it, and I didn't know, and I didn't know there was help out there."Patel has been living at the Veterans Village for three years now. He's recovering from drug and alcohol addiction and PTSD. He's also studying for a bachelor's degree in business. He says Stand Down made it all possible."I've seen the benefits that you can get by just being willing to listen," says Patel. "My life has changed."Pavich says she believes donations are down because the event has been moved to earlier in the year. Traditionally, it has been held on the same weekend as Comic-Con in late July. Last year, the VVSD moved it to late June. Pavich thinks people who wait until the last minute to send donations don't know about the earlier date."Stand Down is the in-road to saving lives," she says. "When we can offer someone their life back, you can't put a dollar value on that. But we need dollars to make that happen."The VVSD is still accepting donations through their website, VVSD.net or you can call Lisa Record at 619-393-2000 to make a donation over the phone. 2154
