SAN DIEGO, Calif. — Scientists are harnessing a not-so-secret weapon in the fight against climate change: plants.“Plants are very good at one thing and that is to catch carbon dioxide out of the air and using the power of the sunlight to fix it to make into bio-materials," said Wolfgang Busch.A plant scientist and professor at the Salk Institute for Biological Studies, Busch is co-director of the Harnessing Plants Initiative (HPI). "Plants are superheroes," said Busch. “They can do what nothing else can do, no technical solution at that scale, to catch a lot of carbon dioxide and fix it.”Yet, humanity is still losing the climate change battle. After decades of burning fossil fuels, the planet continues to warm, with natural disasters growing more frequent and intense.Busch says while plants suck up carbon dioxide, some of it is released back into the atmosphere.“How can we actually make plants better in not only catching the carbon dioxide but keeping it in the soil?” said Busch.That's the challenge his team set out to solve, working to identify genes that help plants store more carbon underground. “Trying to enhance their superhero capability even more," said Busch. They’re developing plants with deeper, more massive roots, rich in a substance called suberin, a natural carbon storage device. Combined, these traits supercharge the plants, allowing them to absorb more carbon dioxide and keep it locked underground.“We think it has all the characteristics of something that can make a huge impact addressing this very difficult question, how to draw down carbon dioxide from the air and store it," said Busch. These climate fighting traits can then be transferred to the world’s six most prevalent crops: corn, soybean, canola, rice, wheat, and sorghum.By tapping into the existing agricultural supply chain, researchers say more than 75 percent of the world’s cropland could be converted into carbon storage.“We think in 10 to 15 years, after partnering with different stakeholders, seeds will be available to farmers at scale to plant the first carbon-sequestering crops,” said Busch.Busch says one of their top priorities is ensuring the initiative will benefit farmers, aiming to produce plants that will equal, if not exceed, the yields of current crops. And storing carbon underground not only protects the atmosphere but enriches the soil, making it more fertile.Busch says the plants will also be more resilient to climate-related threats, with an enhanced ability to hold water, resist pathogens, and tolerate stress"Gives us hope that we can make a huge impact; if we can develop crops that are better at storing carbon for longer and if these crops are adopted at a very large scale," said Busch.The initiative has received over million in grants, with the most recent boost from Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos donating million. 2867

SAN DIEGO, Calif. (KGTV) -- One lucky couple will spend the rest of their lives together after crossing the finish line at America's Finest City half marathon together. The couple got engaged at the finish line in Balboa Park.The half marathon kicked off at the Cabrillo National Monument. Participants ran through Point Loma, past the San Diego Bay, the Embarcadero and ended in Balboa Park.The half-marathon is part of a series of racing called the Triple Crown, which means if runners participated in the La Jolla and Carlsbad marathons, they received a special medal today. Proceeds from the race go to several local charities.  660

SAN DIEGO (KGTV)-- As of today, it is illegal to live in your car in the city of San Diego. This controversial law took effect right after yesterday night's City Council vote. Homeowners in many San Diego neighborhoods said it is about some regulation is enforced. But homeless advocates called it a human rights violation. 10News met with two "van-lifers," as they called themselves. One of them was 39-year-old Jason Thorwegen. He said he is a Southern California native, who has been homeless since childhood."I started being homeless at the age of 8 years old," Thorwegen said. He admitted, it has not been easy, and that he is not perfect. But he never thought he would be in trouble, while trying to stay out of trouble, inside his van. Tuesday night, San Diego City Council approved the updated the Vehicle Habitation Ordinance, after residents complained about health and safety. "People who live in my neighborhood are defecating and urinating on the street, I see it. and I live it," one lady said at the Council meeting Tuesday.RELATED: San Diego City Council passes restrictions on living in vehiclesStarting Wednesday, living in a vehicle is illegal on city streets between 9 pm and 6 am unless parked in a designated Safe Parking Zone. "It's kind of disheartening, to be honest, to see that it's not as comprehensive as it could have should have been," Teresa Smith said. Smith runs the non-profit organization, "Dreams For Change," which provides 60 safe parking spaces throughout the city. The city currently has 120 spaces, with plans to offer more this year. "Even though as much as they try to say it was not around criminalization, I do not see how it is not," Smith said.10News also spoke to "van-lifer," Maria Ennis. She plans to get the ACLU on her side, to fight that the untimely law, is a human rights violation. "If they are making more parking lots, why don't they make the parking lots first? And then try to make that law?" Ennis asked.Thorwegen said the new lots would not change his lifestyle."I have anxieties that prevent me from living inside," Thorwegen said. He said he has non-combat-related PTSD and other illnesses. That is why started "Van for a Plan."The Go-Fund-me campaign asks people to donate old vans. He then converts them to be provided to clean, homeless veterans. "We want them to do the work, and that way, they can earn the vans," Thrrwegen said. He is working on his second van now. But now with this new ordinance, he is worried his efforts will become mute."What didn't help was when people made it illegal for me to be. You know, illegal for me, to be," Thorwegen said.The city said officers would first have to be trained about the new ordinance before issuing tickets. But Smith anticipated people would likely find other ways to avoid the consequences."So one of the issues we suspect is going to start, is people will start moving right outside the city limits. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A mountain biker wants to warn people about visiting the Tecolote Canyon Nature Trail. He tells 10News he had a disturbing encounter there with a man carrying a knife. Mike Hayes was feet from a trail entrance in Tecolote Canyon off Mt Acadia Boulevard when he was approached by a strange man on Sunday. Hayes says he was walking his bike near the man - a transient in his 20s, dressed in camouflage - when the man suddenly came forward and asked if Hayes was stalking him.  When Hayes said no, the man got agitated and had a look with "Charles Manson eyes." "Next thing you know, he has a knife in his hand and an angry look," said Hayes. "And he says 'If you follow me, I'm going to cut you.'"Hayes says he backed away slowly, got on his bike and rode off, while the man walked his bike away.     875
