SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Arson investigators Saturday were looking into multiple fires set within a three-mile radius of each other in Ocean Beach and Point Loma.The first fire was set at about 1 a.m. on Muir Ave. in Ocean Beach. Three more fires were set on Piedmont Dr. and Catalina Pl. in the Point Loma area, San Diego Fire-Resuce Department said.No structures were damaged and no injuries were reported. Each fire was set in rubbish behind homes, according to SDFD. Due to the proximity and similarities between the small fires, fire officials said the fires were "suspicious" and arson investigators were looking at whether they were connected. No arrests have been made."The San Diego Metro Arson Strike Team (MAST) is investigating several suspicious rubbish fires which occurred last night in the Point Loma and Ocean Beach communities. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Candalee Carbonel remembers the panic she felt Tuesday when her son's principal called about an incident involving her 7-year-old. "This is a horrible situation, I pray no other family has to go through this," said Carbonel. Her son Cole has autism and managed to walk off the Miller Elementary campus in Tierrasanta without staff noticing. He walked about half a mile to his house. "It broke my heart, knowing I drop off my child every day at school in their hands. They are now responsible to be his safety, to keep him out of danger. This really breaks my heart," said Carbonel. Carbonel says panic turned to frustration when she learned how the school handled the situation. "They should've called 911, called the police, then called me, and I could've helped. I could've been somewhere; I could've come home, I could've been here for my son when he was looking for me," said Carbonel. But instead, the principal went to look for Cole herself, driving to the family's home. She found Cole inside the house, watching television on the couch, and proceeded to take him back to the school and call Carbonel. "It broke my heart that a little kid could be running the streets, and no one called his mom," said Carbonel. She's grateful he made it home safe, but Carbonel says she can't help but wonder what could have happened to him on the walk home. The military family is new to the district, and Carbonel says she's been advocating for her son to have a one-on-one aide as he did in his last school district. She was pushing for more support for her son so that an incident like this wouldn't happen. SDUSD says as a result of this incident, they are going to add an additional staff member to provide above-and-beyond support to Cole's classroom. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — At age 41, Ryan Bartell had already achieved so much: He was a two-time all-state runner, served in the Coast Guard, and was helping autistic children alongside his wife. He also had a son of his own. “Ryan called me on March 1 of last year to say that he had been diagnosed with stage IV pancreatic cancer," remembers Jim Bartell, Ryan's father. The cancer was aggressive and chemotherapy wasn't working, Ryan was in a lot of pain. “They had him on morphine and fentanyl, two very serious opioids, and because of those two drugs he was asleep most of the time to deal with the pain," said Jim. Jim says that lasted for about four weeks until Ryan asked for cannabis. “He went from being asleep most of the time with fentanyl and morphine to being alert and being able to communicate, text, talk to friends, have visitors, while he was on the cannabis medicines."Jim says the cannabis gave Ryan a decent quality of life in his final weeks; he passed away seven weeks after the initial diagnosis. “While medical cannabis has been proven to help with reducing nausea, vomiting, and pain, hospitals in our state are expressly prohibited from providing it to patients," said State Senator Ben Hueso.Because of the Federal Drug-Free Workforce Act, hospitals have adopted policies prohibiting cannabis in their facilities. Hueso wants to change that with SB 305 or Ryan’s Law: Compassionate Access to Medical Cannabis in Healthcare Facilities Act.Healthcare facilities which treat terminally ill patients would be required to allow the use of medical cannabis, meaning patients could bring their product inside the hospital.The patient would be required to provide the facility with a copy of their medical marijuana card or recommendation by a physician.The bill excludes vaping or smoking but edibles, oils, topicals, etc. would be allowed.
