In what is normally quiet Cajun country, the sound of shoveling sand rises above all else right now.“Just filling a few sandbags to make sure that we get any water intrusion through the doorways of house,” said Joe Soudelier, who was filling 28 sandbags in Morgan City, Louisiana.In this region of the state known as Acadiana, there are worries about water coming in courtesy of Hurricane Laura.There are many shrimp trawlers visible along the Louisiana coast. About an hour west of Morgan City, people in Iberia Parish, and in other nearby parishes make a living off the water. Now, though, the water that supports their livelihood is a potential threat to their lives.Storm surge along the Louisiana coast could be more than 10 feet in spots. Coupled with strong winds, they are dual concerns with Hurricane Laura.Still, many here won’t evacuate, like Shannon Zeringue, who lives in a trailer.“It’s been there for like 30 years,” she said. “Kind of sunk in the ground. So, I think I'll be okay.”There are shelters open for residents, but Zeringue worries about exposure to the coronavirus. She is counting on sandbags for protection and said she regrets the last time she evacuated.“One year we left and we spent all kind of money going and doing everything and it was like - it was just a waste of money,” Zeringue said. “We could’ve just stayed. And makes it hard for people who don't have money like that to try to evacuate.”Really, though, it is about people taking care of each other in this area where Cajun bonds are strong.“People help each other out every time there's a situation like this,” said resident Al Richard. “And they all give a helping hand to everybody."That was something witnessed first hand, as Soudelier came over to help him.“Everybody helps clean up, pick up and get back to normalcy,” Richard said, “and then we appreciate each other after it’s all over.“It is an ending they are already looking forward to with Hurricane Laura. 1967

Incredible video captured by researchers at Florida Atlantic University captured the blacktip shark's annual migration off Florida’s southeast coast.FAU researchers refer to the blacktip shark's as the "snowbirds of the sea". The sharks migrate south during the cold months and head up north when the weather, and water, start to warm back up. They leave the north when water temperatures drop below 71 degrees Fahrenheit and start heading south.The video was taken by FAU researchers on February 27, right off MacArthur Park in Singer Island.“Last year, we saw a dramatic decline in the number of blacktip sharks that migrated south. In fact, it was so low that we estimated the population to be about one-third of what we have seen in previous years,” said Kajiura, a professor in the Department of Biological Sciences and director of the Elasmobranch Research Laboratory in FAU’s Charles E. In the days and weeks following the February 14 shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, the National Rifle Association saw a significant spike in donations.In fact, reports from the Federal Election Commission show donations to the NRA's Political Victory Fund tripled from January to February.In January,?the NRA collected almost 8,000 in individual contributions. In February,?they collected more than 9,000.It's no secret that interest in guns and gun sales -- as evidenced by anecdotes and manufacturing numbers -- have until recently gotten boosts from mass shootings. But a penny exchanged with a 10% return rate is a financially friendly investment.From the Texas panhandle to southeast Wisconsin, banks across the country are launching coin buyback programs amid a nationwide shortage."We just wanted to be prepared to take care of all of our customers and not leave them short," Erik Schrader of Amarillo National Bank said.Schrader says anyone can bring in up to ,000 in coins to Amarillo National locations and swap them for 10% more in cash. So far, he says the trade-off is paying off for both people and banks."I've never seen a coin shortage. We have had lows throughout time, but never anything we thought was a problem," he said. "But luckily, we were able to get out ahead of this."Some customers aren't even looking to cash in. Neil Buchanan of Community State Bank in Wisconsin says many customers are simply exchanging the coins for bills and not taking the 5% incentive."We've had a lot of people come in and say, "No, no. I don't want the bonus. I just heard that there was a problem. I have this coin. I want to be part of the solution.,'" he said.Economic experts say the coin shortage is linked to the pandemic."There was a decline in supply of coins by the mints and there was an increase in demand for the coins as we all got back to getting the groceries," said Kishore Kulkarni, Ph.D., a professor of economics at MSU Denver.Kulkarni said countries around the world have suffered from coin shortages before, and while these types of coin buyback programs do help the economy, more transactions in the future will require less exact change."We are in a cashless society already, and we will be more so moving forward," Kulkarni said.Moving forward financially, Amarillo National Bank will continue exchanging coins for cash through Sept. 1. It kind of feels like a concert, but there’s no musical performance. It’s former First Lady Michelle Obama, having a conversation with tens of thousands of people during her “Becoming” tour stop in Denver.  “This has been an amazing day being here with all of you,” Obama says.  The event, however, was just one part of the time she spent in the community. Just hours earlier, Emma Jones and her mom were among the hundreds of patients and families who packed the lobby of Children’s Hospital Colorado for the surprise visit.After a warm welcome, Obama sat down with Santa to read a book and answer questions from her young audience members.  “Was there really a movie theater in the White House?” asked one child.  Other questions were more serious, including one that asked Obama what advice she’d give to her younger self.“Don't let fear stop you from doing things that will help you grow,” she replied.  “Just being at the hospital and like knowing that something is going on with you in the first place, it's kind of scary,” says patient Emma Jones. “But like just hearing that message from someone who cares a lot about everybody is just super empowering and like it was just really cool.”Following the hospital stop, Obama signed copies of her book at a local bookstore.   With eight tour stops so far, all of them include some form of giving back to young people. In Detroit, Obama surprised a group of college students, sitting in on a discussion on education. In Boston, she made a stop at a Boys and Girls Club, and in Los Angeles, she read books to preschoolers.  It's a reflection of what Obama says is closest to her heart.  “I love kids.
