VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. -- Cynthia Santiago is currently a master police officer with the Virginia Beach Police Department, but she will soon be Sgt. Cynthia Santiago and the first Latina filling the role.“I'm excited and nervous, and excited-and-nervous is like a constant continuation,” Santiago said.She has been on the force for 10 years and said she joined the police department because she wanted to give back and help her community. She said she also feels some weight on her shoulders."I'm the first one stepping into this role, but I think that as a sergeant,” Santiago explained, “I think my career as a police officer and as a detective shows the type of person I am."She has experience in the patrol unit, domestic violence unit and as a detective."You know, just a regular person - I'm a mom, I'm a daughter and a police officer,” she said. “I don't want to just be considered just the 'Latina police officer.' I have plenty of extracurricular activities that I do outside of work with my family."Santiago took on special projects and efforts such as building a relationship between the department and the growing local Latino community. WASHINGTON (AP) — A vehicle collision between U.S. and Russian forces in eastern Syria has left four U.S. troops with concussions. That's according to two U.S. officials who are speaking on condition of anonymity to provide details that haven't been made public yet. It's the most violent skirmish in months between the two forces. One official says Russian vehicles sideswiped a light-armored U.S. military vehicle, injuring four Americans. The official says two Russian helicopters flew above the Americans, and one of the aircraft was within about 70 feet the vehicle. VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) - Prosecutors presented evidence Thursday against a man suspected of killing his girlfriend in Cardiff in an effort to send the case to trial. Late in the day, a judge decided there was enough evidence for the case to move forward.Henry Cowen is charged with murder in the death of 43-year-old Sabrina Lukosky. During his preliminary hearing in Vista court, attorneys heard from multiple witnesses, including a DNA expert who tied Cowen to the crime scene. Lukosky’s mother requested a welfare check in October 2019 after not hearing from her daughter for several days. RELATED: North County man accused of killing girlfriend tried to escape the country, prosecutors sayOfficers found Lukosky’s car in front of the granny flat she shared with Cowen and reported a foul smell coming from the home. A search warrant was executed a few days later, and led to the discovery of Lukosky’s body. Police said there were signs of a violent struggle in the couple’s bedroom. "There was a broken stick, a bottle that had been broken, some amount of blood, and the victim had a 1.5-inch vertical gash to her forehead," said Deputy District Attorney Marnie Layon. The San Diego County Medical Examiner’s office later determined Lukosky died of blunt force trauma and strangulation. Prosecutors believe Cowen left San Diego County and traveled to Los Angeles, then took a Lyft to Riverside County. They also said Cowen tried to leave the country with the help of his children’s mother.
